Long story short - the USS Juneau is in town on its way to San Diego to be decommissioned. My wife and kids and I are taking four sailors sightseeing all day, and then we're going to have a crab & salmon cookout at Auke Rec or Lena Beach. I've bought a dozen dungeness crab that are awaiting their fate in a submerged barrel down at Aurora Harbor, two sockeye salmon I'll be grilling, and assorted other things. If there are any Juneau area Farkers who would like to join in, bring some beer or a side dish or whatever and join us. 5pm, Auke Rec (most likely shelter #4)

My cell is 723-6024

For those of you who can't make it, this is the view:

Man, I'm jealous. Hope you guys have a blast.

Isn't it slightly dangerous to post your cell # here?

And have fun - being in Canada there is no way I could do this :-)

LonghornJ 2008-07-27 12:31:03 PM
They greenlighted somebody's cell phone number?

That's farking brilliant.

ChubbyTiger 2008-07-27 12:32:00 PM
I was going to make a comment about sailors, crabs, and the dangers of impromptu Farking, but I'll forbear. Nice picture, btw.

Archie DeBunker [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 12:32:48 PM
Nice view. Very nice.

If I recall correctly, if you mention that you are having a party and all are welcome on Face Place, or whatever, several hundred people will show up. But, beware, they might trash the beach.

I wish I could be there but it would be a long drive.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 12:33:32 PM
*sniff* That's a beautiful sight right there.

Lucky farkers.

/I love crabs, too
//The edible kind, not the Paris Hilton-esque kind

I enjoyed my time in the Navy as a submariner, but i will always envy the cool places the surface ships visited that we never did. Enjoy the party guys and gals!

/STS3 then STS2, USS Los Angeles, 85 to 89

what *kind* of crabs?

Klippoklondike 2008-07-27 01:04:58 PM
The Stennis floated by the Alaskan coast on my first deployment, very beautiful. Didn't make port of call, but was still pretty nice.

Too bad you guys aren't decomming in Bremerton Washington, i'm heading up there in a couple weeks to see some old sailor buddies of mine.

basemetal [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 01:06:36 PM

rapiddetox 2008-07-27 01:20:56 PM
I'm going to be in Juneau August 4th, any awesome local fare I could try? I'm trying to steer away from touristy things as they're generally expensive and we're generally broke.

Wish I could come up for crab feast this evening. That would be awesome.

MONSTERTRUCK [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 01:22:15 PM
Can we bring our own crabs?

monsieurstabby [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 01:30:16 PM
I really need to move to Alaska. Awesome talented Farkers, gorgeous scenery, great food....

wrayvynn 2008-07-27 01:38:24 PM
If we'd had a weeks notice we might have been able to make it. Gas is just too high, and Juneau's a looong way from fairbanks. I have never been to Juneau, one of these days I'd like to check it out.

Not many people can say they are flying DOWN to Juneau...

Hamanu 2008-07-27 01:46:33 PM
I'm about 100km east of Juneau in B.C., If anyone feels like sending a jetbox over I'll come out. :)

Deceased Clockmaker 2008-07-27 01:47:56 PM
How long a drive is that from Chicago,I am free tonight.

Rodeodoc 2008-07-27 01:52:23 PM
Enjoy the party farkers. And the crab and salmon. I remember my days in Kitimat BC, just south of the southern tip of Alaska on the mouth of the Douglas Channel. We used to buy a whole salmon from the Native Indian fishermen for a dollar. Salmon and beer. Good times.

And since this is Fark, I'll just say: Hey soosh. Nice picture. Do you mind if we drill for oil there? No? Why do you hate America? Etc.

Old_Chief_Scott [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 01:56:06 PM
This is awful nice of you to do, soosh. If any of those squids fail to show the proper appreciation, let me know and I'll meet them down at 32nd Street when they pull in and kick their ass.

Stickdeath 2008-07-27 02:01:39 PM
Think that you could, I dunno, send a boat to me here in upstate NY? Alaska is a far drive.

Oh no. Tell me you didn't go there and why did that make me smile.

Looking forward to the food.
About to be assaulted, strip searched and whatever else they want to do to me on the plane these days. haven't flown in a while. Should probably save that for another thread.

Thats awesome of you to take the sailors sight-seeing :) You have restored my faith in humanity

"impromptu crab feast" - is that Alaskan slang for something? And if so am i wrong for wanting to attend more now than i did when i first read the headline?

Psychofarkulator 2008-07-27 02:18:46 PM
While in Juneau be sure to go to Pelmini's. Its not hard to spot, look for the massive crowd of people heading there after the bars close.

/spent 4th of July there last summer with my friends.
//would move there in a second if there was work.

Technoir 2008-07-27 02:22:09 PM

Would be tempted to hop down from anchorage for this - but I sadly work tonight.

Ed Grubermann [TotalFark] 2008-07-27 03:12:24 PM
Soosh, Too bad it's cold and overcast today. But then when isn't it? I'll ask Mrs. Grubermann if she's up for it. Any chnace to get out of cooking dinner is fine by me.
