In early with with snark about article mention of the Vatican's recent pre-emptive acceptance of alien life... centuries of proclomations that there is only us, divine reflections of a grander self.

Then they found water on Mars, and the papal backpedaling was swift and furious.

FTFA: We'd all know that aliens don't punch their way out of your chest like a mutant sock-puppet as they do in Alien.

Nor would we find the depictions in Men In Black all that humorous.

On your bike, ET, we've got the real thing at our local zoo.

Gone too would be much of the point and a lot of the fun of Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who.

No, see, it wouldn't prove any of that. If there is one type of alien out there, there almost certainly have to be more types of aliens. I'm not giving up on possibilities just because something we hadn't thought yet drops by.

Either way it was a radical departure from the "we're the only ones" spiel of previous centuries.

Not to mention that whole the earth is the center of the universe and the sun revolves around it thing that got Copernicus burned at the stake and Galileo a life sentence of home imprisonment. Let's hear it for Papal infallibility.

Yeah, that's why they never make movies about anything that happened in the real world. A movie can't measure up.

ALL govts have a vested interest in keeping sentient or intelligent ET life hidden and secret.

Why?

Proof of said would under mine if not cancel out all world religions.

Created in God's image, his one and only favorite species?

Not anymore.

The chaos and calamity that would occur if a UFO landed in the middle of times square and there was no way to deny it would, in essence, cause the breakdown of all civilizations and societies.

Why bother carrying on if there's proof that we are but inconsequential monkeys with two stroke engines and cable TV?

It's the very height of hubris to think that we're "alone" in the universe and even more so to think that we're "special" in any way shape or form.

UFOs and "aliens" ARE real.

They are not, however, form other planets.

They are us, from the future, coming back to try and figure out how to un-fark however it is we ultimately and irreparably fark up the planet.

Not trying to defend the Catholic Church's record here, but Copernicus wasn't burned at the stake. He died of natural causes (possibly a stroke). Many high ranking members of the Church, in fact, urged Copernicus to publish his findings when he was hesitant to do so. "On.. Heavenly Spheres" was actually even dedicated to the Pope and Copernicus was buried in a cathedral. It's true that he was worried about offending some theologians but there was little controversy at all about the book until several years after it was published (and after his death).

Not that it hasn't been pointed out already, but to correct you, it was Giordano Bruno who had an iron spike driven through his tongue and was later burned at the stake because the Pope didn't like science. He lived just after Copernicus.

In other words: "Must...do anything...to defend...the church!"

Seriously, ever notice how many posts there are in threads related to catholic molestation where catholics furiously defend the church's crimes? It's like their subconscious priorities go:

#1. Protect my religion/church
#2. Protect my loved ones
#3. Protect myself

In that light it's hard not to regard religious memes as mental parasites that compel their hosts to protect them at all costs and of course spread them to other hosts. Survival and propagation of the meme comes before survival and propagation of the host. How perverse is that?

Well, the difference would be admitting we were wrong about that. The Vatican never makes such admissions. They bloviate to a stupendous degree to attempt to maintain the illusion of infallibility while noting changes.

Fact, the Catholic Church was wrong about astronomy, medical science, etc. Thus, the Catholic Church is NOT advised directly by God on these matters. As above, so below is BS.

The Pope is not an enlightened seer of God, period.

That said aliens almost certainly haven't been visiting us. It's not the distances involved; for any sufficiently advanced race that would not be an issue. It's more likely that they simply haven't found us. Our solar system is a proverbial needle in a haystack, and a race already aware of hundreds or thousands of similarly intelligent races isn't going to be terribly concerned with finding another one, not in the way that they might've been back before they'd made first contact. For them the existence of other intelligent life would be a foregone conclusion, and adding yet another to their knowledge base wouldn't be particularly valuable especially if we have nothing to offer them in terms of technology.

tl;dr: They probably haven't found us and don't care about finding us.

That's not necessarily true. There might not be any possible way to ever exceed the speed of light.

boobsrgood: A little learning is a dangerous thing, Geoff Shearer.

Yeah, people who were told secrets don't like more intelligent people figuring it on their own.

Kind of ruins that whole "elite" image they like to see themselves as.

SR_NightBane 2008-07-27 04:22:13 PM
Zamboro makes a good point in so far as he goes, however the presumption that intergalactic travel is a foregone conclusion of technological development, something that is eventually going to happen simply because of scientiffic inquiry, is slightly erroneous. One has to remember that research is driven by social and environmental needs and resource availabilities, it is entirely possible a culture could develop with an incredibly heavilly developed classical mechanical technological base but none of or less of the electronic technology, or a vastly differant forms thereof due to environmental factors.

I would guess most "advanced civilizations" would adapt readily to the "reality" of alien civilizations. So much of our favorite and beloved alternate realities rely on this very concept in TV, books, movies, and other media.

It certainly would cause pause for religious thought and leaders, but I think the organized religions have probably thought this possibility long ago, and accept the possibility, even probability, of alien life.

"God created the Universe" in a mighty burst. The Big Bang provides that moment, it provides the physical laws, and everything which was necessary for life to develop, but we can't account for the beginning.

They put us here after figuring out what happens when you add xeno-jizz to a pouch of sea monkeys. Now they just come by occasionally and tap on the glass to watch us skitter around.
