I feel the same way. My father-in-law has a dog that was saved from a puppy mill.She was forced to have 4 litters before she was even a year old. It took him weeks before she would even let him near her. Now she is his loyal companion and best friend. I would never, ever pay for a dog! Shelter dogs are wonderful.

I grew up with dogs and this story makes me think some rather violent thoughts towards the proprietors. All the dogs I had as a kid came from the local SPCA. With the exception of one, they were always in good health when we got them. The one that wasn't was the runt of the litter and had hepatitis A that was passed down from his mother. Easily treatable and Seamus lived a good life.
A friend's family got a dog from a breeder (it may have been a puppy mill) and the poor thing had health problems from the start.
I live in an apartment now, which is no place for a dog. As soon as I have enough space, I'm getting me a nice black lab.

I'm not a dog owner, but my two cats are rescued strays. Not a big fan of buying animals from breeders, because you get crap like this happening. There are more than enough sweet animals that need a good home, and unless you're planning to breed or show yourself, there's no reason to get purebreds.

/there's a rescue for damn near every breed you could want, and they are usually very accommodating in getting you your dog. The bonus with a rescue is that the dogs are in foster care with people that train them, and raise that breed correctly.

Well, there is an argument for selling dogs at high prices; that being that people will tend to consider them as more of an investment (think car or home)and thus take better care of them. Probably BS but something to consider.

I'm a supporter of shelters. My current dog is a rescue dog and my next one will be too. I contribute to a local no-kill shelter when I can. I'd take 'em all in if I could.

I'm a foster home for the local pet rescue. All my pets have been rescues. None of them came from a specific breed rescue group because none of them would consider me for entirely arbitrary reasons.

The sad thing is that most of those pups will have major health issues. Rampant dysplasia and myriad eye problems are just the beginning. For as much as I hate PETA and all the crap they pull, I wish the penalties for animal cruelty were more like the penalties for human cruelty.

Don't buy a pet from a pet store, dammit! (Well, not a fuzzy or feathered pet. It's probably okay to buy fish.)

WTF does anyone need a designer dog or cat for? My stepmother saw a ragdoll cat and Had To Have One, even though they were close to bankruptcy. You want a pet, go to the pound and get a pet! A loving, healthy (they healthify them), relatively inexpensive, isn't-inbred-and-knows-what-a-litter-box-is-for, pet!

My baby was at a pet store, but they were working with a no-kill shelter to display pets up for adoption.

I imagine that, with as many people doing breed rescues as there are, some groups are going to be asshats. That said, we've had two wonderful dogs through the Westie (West Highland White Terrier) Rescue in my family. The first, a girl named Annabel, was with us for only three years; we got her at age seven, and her body was simply worn out from having to bear litter after litter in horrible conditions at a puppy mill. She died too young, at ten. I wouldn't trade those three years for the world, though-- she was one hell of a dog.

Our current rescue Westie, Charlie, is also a wonderful dog; we got him at less than a year old and absolutely adore him:

We have a foster home, too, and I encourage everyone to try it first before adopting. Not only will you be doing a good deed, but the perfect pet will come to you eventually, and you'll get first dibs!

We have a plague of Army trash here. (Note, I said Army trash, not soldiers. They aren't the same thing.) They buy puppies from pet stores, treat them like shiat, and then dump them when they are deployed or transferred. I hate it. Hate it hate it hate it.
