My second bass teacher played funk on an upright electric with his band. At other times he could sound very similar to that guy.

Bass is hard to play. Just ask Ringo.

For the love of Pete, the bass guitar is a rhythm instrument. The only time a bassist should venture past the 7th fret is for a cool slide. Otherwise, KEEP YOUR LOW END, that's your job.

And at least three tracks of basses to make up for it.

Those are guitars. Bass guitars. It's still a guitar.

Also, It sounded pretty tolerable up until that goddamn fretless "bwaa!" started in. Worst sound ever made by anything in the world. I'd rather listen to a band with a fork-on-blackboard player than a fretless bass player.

I enjoyed that, and I'm a guitarist.

I used to not have much respect for bassists, I figured they're just guitarists who gave up and didn't want to work as hard at getting good at an instrument, but the more bassists I meet, I find some who that is really all they wanted to be AND that are really very good at it.

Go listen to "The Real Me" by The Who, and then shut your damn mouth.

I went straight to bass.
I wasn't a "failed guitarist" or the worst guitarist who got "demoted" to the bass as is the case for most bass players.
Ironically,it was JIMI HENDRIX that turned me on to bass.
The bass-line to "Third Stone From the Sun" is what hooked me.
That deep and warm throbbing bass line just did it for me and made want to be a bassist.
Also,THE WHO "Can You See the Real Me" and BLACK SABBATH "NIB" were early songs which the bass parts hooked me in.

Here is what I have learned about electric basses over the years:

FENDER JAZZ BASS WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!
The Fender Jazz bass is the best period.
Versatile for ALL styles. Easy to play and maintain.
Fender Precision is a one trick pony.(it does that one trick very well though)
Gibson basses are too heavy and muddy sounding.(Thunderbird headstocks almost always crack)
Rickenbacker are too problematic. (too many trips to the luthier)
Ernie Ball/Music Man are sadly way inconsistent now. Try out several before buying.

Fender Jazz bass is my fail-safe choice.
Biting and crisp tone but with the neck pick-up you can also get a deep tubby low tone. I play my Fender P-bass when I want a Jamerson Motown sound but my Jazz bass does everything else.

I would really like to see Farkers' videos; so many talented folks here. Farktography gives an arena for farker-photogs -- awesome, bTW. So why not a forum for our musician and artist farkers?

I don't consider this AW-ing, but sharing. If you're a musician or an artist, please post your work. I'd love to cheerlead you all from central NJ!

As a bass player for a pop/rock project I have to agree, though it is fun to see folks with way more talent than I'll ever have stretch a little.

I find it hard to believe that no one has posted this yet:

WTF are you people talking about with the technical bass hate? Yeah, no one likes senseless wankering (tho for some reason that's OK for shred guitarists)... but many great artists like John Entwistle and Geddy Lee would like a word with you about "knowing their place". If a bassist has the chops to go nuts without muddying up the song, farking let 'em have at it! Only makes the music richer.

/RIP Entwisle, went out like a true rocker: doing coke and banging some chick 20 years his junior

Have you ever played in a power trio? When there are only two melodic instruments you have to venture out of your comfort zone a little bit.

I admit, I am not a very flashy or show-offy bass player, but I know my place in the band, too, which is to kick ass at all times.

craigdamage 2008-07-27 02:57:49 PM
I am a bassist and I do actually agree with leftymcrighty

However--the once in a blue moon that I play higher than the 7th--I step on the low root note on my analog bass synth pedals so the bottom doesn't drop out. (I have these custom made "poor man's Taurus" pedals)

Also,I sometimes use an Octave effect pedal if I play too high.
It keeps the low-end from disappearing.

angst178n 2008-07-27 04:53:03 PM
I play bass and I can and actually do go below the 7th fret on my bass. I play on all 4 strings as well, not just the low E. I can shred it up on the high frets just as well as any guitarist.

I know my place in the band. I play what sounds good.

The reason that I started on the bass was because of Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler, Les Claypool, and to many other low enders to list here. Hell most of the talent in Tool and System of a Down are the bassist and drummer.

Bassists however don't need a spotlight shining on us constantly to be reassured that we have skills.

How about reading the whole post? I love to watch folks who are way more talented than me play. And I fully admit they are more talented. However, that being said, being a session guy has made me a great living. Should the project call for it, I will play whatever, even stuff like this. Doubt my prowess all you want (I won't speak for the others that your refering to), I just don't feel the need to post myself on Youtube.

Oh, and since this is a bass thread, why not post pics of my new custom:

Bassist of 20+ years here too.

The best part about music is that if you enjoy what you're doing, you win. Period.

Projecting your own rules/tastes onto other people does nothing more than advertise your own closed-mindedness.

It's not the hammer, it's what you build with it that counts. The instrument is just a tool. Well, drummers can be tools too, but that's a whole other thing.

Made by Justin @ Joes Guitars in Salt Lake City. The guy does nothing but custom work, and works pretty inexpensively. Here's his link Link (new window)

The website ain't pretty, but his basses get the job done. I have a 4 that he built and when I needed a five it was just logical to call him. The pickups are Nordstrand MM2's (passive), walnut body (2-piece), maple/maple neck/fingerboard. 2.15" at the nut (I have pretty big mitts. Should be here in a couple of weeks.

This.

I understand that "not going past the 7th fret" can work as a rule of thumb for bassists, but to say there's NO reason to? How about exploring everything your instrument is capable of? Exploring a unique sound or style can be a lot of fun, and the result may sound horrible or it may sound awesome. Bass may primarily be a rhythm instrument, but a unique bass riff can really add to a song, or sound great on its own.

/not a bassist, amateur (electric) guitarist
//about one year with a guitar, no formal lessons...just do it because it's fun

That Jaco link was embarrassing.
Worst I have ever heard from him.
Sloppy,noisy and no groove whatsoever.

....I love Jaco with Weather Report and Pat Metheny and his solo records.

That must have been during his drunk demise period.

he was hit or miss even in his extreme f*ckup days. live in new york vol 5 is one of the best performances from him(and mike stern)ive ever heard and that was when he and stern both were as strung out as it gets. as for the video-how in the hell could you think that was real?

I should have figured that one was one of the parody "shred" videos.

There REALLY are stories of Jaco having major train wrecks on stage in the 80s though. This was during his tragic booze-pills downfall period just before his death.

Oh,well--only thing "tragic" here is me failing at getting an obvious joke.

Bleh.

For my money, give me Kira Roessler of Black Flag and Mike Watt of the Minutemen jamming together, sans guitar and drums.
