I always kinda felt that, in an odd way, Ziggy Stardust and The Wall were kindred works.

Bowie really ruined that for me. Not the best performance I've seen anyway.

ya know, i just started smoking green again after 13 years clean, and I did it mainly for the experience of seeing things like this on a different level. Glad I got to see it.

First thought: Bowie is singing that in an ..interesting way

Second thought: Whoever that old dude on keyboards is, he's doing a damn good Rick Wright impression... wait... that IS Rick Wright! Farking sweet!

Third thought: Man i STILL get chills listening to those guitar solos

/I can play all the notes on the first solo easy
//I am still missing something though, I don't get chills playing it
///Not giving up

Wow, Gilmour's voice is still in fine condition, isn't it? Great voice to begin with.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. David Gilmour still sounds great buy Bowie was horrible.

Derwood 2008-07-27 10:52:19 AM
Bowie does a better job with "Arnold Layne" (same concert).

If you want real chills find "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" with David Crosby and Graham Nash on backing vocals (same concert). It's amazing.

Thank you for that, Derwood. Phenomenal.

I thought Bowie was a big Syd fan and didn't care about post-'68 Pink Floyd.

I love the shots, starting at approximately 6:45 in, of some douche in the audience doing the Watusi to this song.

I think this is one of those songs you have to listen to sitting down. Just sit down, close your eyes, and let it wash over you.

And by the way, this video should be required viewing for all the Dragonforce fans who think that great "guitar technique" is just playing as fast as you can, and more faster=more gooder when it comes to guitar playing.

If you count Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell as solo David work, then I would agree with Derwood.

I don't. Plus he needed outside help to create those albums.

I thought you were referring to the live shows.

No, Waters has had better solo efforts (Radio KAOS being the exception). Either guy is basically a Pink Floyd cover band live, and as such, i'd rather here the guy who can sing and play the guitar to the guy who wrote the songs, but that's just me.

FredGarvin 2008-07-27 07:28:42 PM
I love this version, the one thing Gilmour can't pull off w/o Roger is the vocals on this song. Bowie doesn't ape Waters' vocal, he does his own take one it, and it works quite well. Different from Waters, but very good.

And I rather like Radio KAOS, although neither is as good without the other.

Certainly You Jest 2008-07-27 08:36:03 PM
I really like Bowie's take on the vocal.

Richard Wright farking rules.

David Gilmour is an absolutely incredible guitar player. Guess what, kids--faster doesn't equal better. Listen to the top-shelf tastefulness of those licks.

WOW.

Derwood: Here, I found the Shine On for you (pops)

That was niiiice.

/Sorry about misspelling Gilmour.

//Smitty

StormDawg 2008-07-27 09:48:35 PM
I concur with FredGarvin and Certainly You Jest. It would be daft for Bowie to try to mimic the half-spoken vocal style Waters uses on the recording. He did it Bowie-style. Not my favorite version ever, but not bad.

I watched Bob Geldof's version from the "related videos" sidebar. It seemed fairly uninspired...

Had to chime in. I enjoy the solo efforts of both, but they evoke very different moods. The trick to enjoying Gilmour's solo efforts, for me, is to forget about "Pink Floyd" and any expectations I might have before I listen to them. If you listen to a Gilmour solo record expecting a Pink Floyd mood and experience, you're more likely to be disappointed. Speaking for myself, of course.

A personal fave:

While roger waters was a good song writer, he was an insufferable prick from every book from both sides written about him, even good books on him describe him as temperamental, code word for asshole.

He actually thought people would quit following/going to pink floyd shows with out him, sad that brilliance was wasted on a ego driven douche.

And the Live 8 version was a hell of a lot better Link (new window)

And if you really want to relive a trip, may I suggest Run Like Hell from Pulse? Link (new window)

I wasn't sure how to feel when I read the headline. Bowie singing Floyd seemed rather like blasphemy at first. However, upon listening, it was awsome.

Then again, Gilmour could play "twinkle, twinkle, little star" with Alvin and the Chipmunks and make it awsome.

Mr_Fabulous 2008-07-28 11:59:40 AM
I just picked up that first Gilmour solo disc this weekend. Hadn't heard it in over 20 years. Used to have the vinyl back in high school, when it first came out. Sort of forgot about it.

Very glad I did. I forgot what a good album that is. The rest of his solo work...not so much. Sorry.
