Nothing will replace Sushi as king of cuisine.

Nothing.

As a Salvadoran who enjoys Pupusas, I approve of this article.

I love living on my street. Within one block's radius of my apartment I have an excellent Greek restaurant, two falafel joints, three (!) Indian restaurants, a Chinese takeout, a Caribbean cuisine restaurant, an "edible art gallery", two hoity toity lobbyist restaurants, a decent coffee shop, an old-school Italian restaurant that does a kickass veal, a glorified taqueria, and a yuppie sammich lunch place.

So no, I don't really care about your foodie fads, I've got the world on my plate. :D

Half that stuff has been popular so long its already on its way out. Small plates? 2006.

I guess these folks don't live in Los Angeles where pupusas have been on the menu for about 20 years.

I never realized how popular sushi is until I spent some time in Los Angeles. It's everywhere over there. Apparently Southern Californians love it. Not sure why. I guess it's what the "cool crowd" eats.

I'm fortunate to live in the Bay Area where deciding what kind of food to eat takes just as long as deciding where you want to go get it. I've tried both home-made and restaurant pupusas and they're good. You won't get me to eat the loroco ones though. Those flowers don't smell too good. Mongolian barbecue has been around for quite some time. I've been going to places like that since the 90's. Mmmmm. Nacatamale. Samosas. Anything Thai. I haven't tried mangosteen yet, but I've tasted fresh durian and tried the durian ice cream at Polly Ann's.

I have to say the Brazilian Steakhouse experience is for my money (and it can be quite expensive) the coolest new concept out there.

I live in north-central florida...you can get sushi anywhere, most supermarket chains here carry typical rolls (they aren't amazing, but that's what expensive restaurants are for).

Of course, there are tons of Asians here, but it is the same way back where I'm from (a tiny beach town).

I just finished a book last week called 'The Ultimate' by William Poundstone, and mangosteens are mentioned as one of the 'ultimate best foods'. First time I ever heard of mangosteens; the book was written in the mid-80s, so I guess they've been around in a few places in the States for a while...

I love pupusas so much I submitted a TFD thread (new window) about them the other night. :)

The only risk with something this thrilling is its potential for bastardization. Texas ham-and-cheese dosas, anyone?

How DARE you associate Texas with ham!

We'd use it as a basis for something of the chicken fried steak variety.

Chokeberries coming up within a year or two as the miracle cure for everything, by the way. Mark my words.

I usually prepare when I go to those...it can almost be called training. I love those places.

Only been to one once. Didn't expect to drop a bill for two people that night (alread spent $200 on shoes earlier). But I still have to say it was worth every penny. I almost completely filled up on the salad bar before I even got my first portion of meat. I think you are right, you really have to prepare before going to one.

I can't wait til the new one opens up here in KC that will make the third one we have.

Sushi is last year? I thought Pho was the newest SE Asian thing. Those places are popping up everywhere. Not that its a bad thing, I love Pho. I love sushi more.

I'm waiting for Tapas bars to start showing up everywhere.

guesser 2008-07-27 12:18:09 AM

I like the sizzling hot pot of oil on the table idea. Drop your food in, wait for it to cook, pull it out when it's still nice and fresh and HOT! I'm not sure the Chinese realize that we Americans tend to sue when hot oil gets splashed, or spilled, or dripped or tasted or.....

/Not going to end well.

They're already all over the place here around Albany. :P There's one within a block's radius of my apartment, too, but I don't really consider it food.

My buddy Jorge's wife and mother-in-law make some awesome pupusas, but they got me addicted to sopes.

Mangosteens have a very thick skin to protect delicate pure white segments inside. They have a deliciously sharp/tangy flavour. The flesh bruises easily. I heartily recommend them.

www.seymourtotti.comHave you tried ta ka tan?

Yes, that's it. We're all just a bunch of followers out here. It has nothing to do with the fact that it's delicious and not half bad for you (if you avoid the spicy tuna roll).

But I guess ragging on Southern California is what the "cool crowd" does.

i loooooove mangosteens! it sucks that you can't get them in the US. Though I remember my dad used get them way back in the way somehow, looking back on it it was probably illegal. Anyway, i highly recommend to anyone who is able to try them fresh.

I loved the "Bizarre Foods" episode where Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain go to the Red Hook ballfields (Brooklyn) and have some Pupusas. Motherfarker was like "These are good Pupusas", sounding like a real connoisseur. T'was funny.

I like hotpot. Curries are fantastic. Shwarma or Tandori are fantastic street foods. Steak is still fantastic, though. My freezer isn't full of sushi and mangosteen.

As a huge mangosteen eater, I can say this much...

Magosteens stupid interesting facts:

- the number of segements is equal to the number of "petals" on the flower on the bottom,
- to open them with your hands is safer than with a knife, the shell is HARD. Interlace your fingers on both hands together and then grip the mangosteen, top towards your wrists, and slowly apply pressure, the shell will split and crack. Don't over squeeze as the juice in the shell is not that pleasant tasting
- the juice from the shell is purple red and stains cotton but easily washed from your hands
- you can sometimes find hitchhikers on the mangosteen, shake the small ants from underneath the leaves on the stem
- the fruit inside is white, the larger segments may have a pit which is horribly bitter and do not break when eating
- and magosteen makes bad breath disappear while eating (or so the old folks say)
- brown fruit inside is bad
- DO NOT THROW AT FRIENDS AS A JOKE, THEM THINGS IS HARD AS ROCK

/ bought a case yesterday afternoon
// bought one and then went for the rest
/// if you find a good one, the get the rest as it is difficult to find good ones

Fresh Mangosteen is now available legitimately in the US. Thailand is allowed to irradiate them and ship them. Pretty expensive though! Frozen and canned have been available for some time, but fresh is best.

And no knockin' sushiathem's tasty stuff.
