Polar bears are not meant to be kept in zoos. Virtually all zoo animals are maladjusted, if not psychotic. This is why I always take them goodies when I vist. believeitornotthisissarcasm

That article reads like a string of appeals to pity, strung together awkwardly like a first-grader's attempt at jewelry making. I've seen the 'lunging Knut' picture before in an article which made no mention at all of 'psychotic' behavior.

FTFA: At the height of "Knutmania," he was the reigning king of YouTube and appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair's green issue, snapped by no less than Annie Liebowitz. The zoo was even in negotiations with a Hollywood producer to make a feature film about him.

I wonder if Annie is any relation to Fawn?

how many times has this pic been used before now, 50? 100?

I wonder if the original photographer got some more credit lately. Anyway, as noted in the article (bolded for stupidity): "Another new mother at Nuremberg had been refusing to feed her two cubs and the zoo decided, in this case, to let nature take its course. "We want to avoid a repeat of the stupid Knutmania," explained deputy director Helmut Magdefrau, pointedly adding, "We've got a baby giraffe that's cute too."

About a week later, however, keepers discovered to their horror that the mother had eaten both cubs. "

Is it that hard to decide if you want to let mother nature do its job or not? This is like yelling at a jungle cat for having stripped a tree with its claws. How dare that cat! (sarcasm).

So either a: press is pulling logic out their asses here or b: someone is still digging in their ass for gold.

Snowydog 2008-07-26 04:50:16 PM
How did the zoo, which is supposedly staffed with animal experts, not realize that rearing a bear around nothing but humans would end badly as it became an adult?

Isn't that like "Wild Animals 101" at zoo school or something?

Nice.

Dogs and Cats reared amongst humans miss us when we are gone. Why are they shocked? Us humans... we grow on animals. This is poorly thought out issue it would appear.

You've socialised him to like humans. Solution? Take away the only his primary human? Then overreact when the polar bear is upset.

This is a disappointing story. Poor Knut. Those making decisions for him are retarded.

slobarnuts 2008-07-26 04:53:21 PM
"Young polar bears learn their behaviour from their mothers for up to two years, but Knut copies zoo visitors. That is completely asocial behaviour."

o put him next to the monkey cage. He'll spend so much time trying to fling gigantic piles of bear shiat and cup his gigantic paw around his wiener that he won't give a shiat about the zoo visitors.

mialynneb [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-07-26 04:53:30 PM
Are these idiots that shocked that the one person that was taking on the "mother" role and then was taken away that the bear has become agitated?

Freaking idiots.

I'm all for animal rights but the group in the story are also a bunch of idiots. Biatch and moan when they take care of the cub and biatch and moan when they let the cubs pass. I've watched National Geographic since I was a kid and it's not shocking to me that the mom ate the cubs.

You fark with Mother Nature and then you're surprised when this kind of shiat happens.

so answer the question already!!!

is it better to be eaten by your mother or raised psycho?

Snowydog 2008-07-26 04:57:22 PM
seminole87: What has "ended badly"? Some animal rights nuts says the bear is psycho and you draw a conclusion from that? Are you mental or what?

No, I'm not mental. I read the article. The bear is not acting bear-like. It was raised incorrectly and unnaturally. Please attack me some more though, and call me a few more names, I haven't had a good random flaming in a while!

"Knut needs to leave Berlin Zoo, the sooner the better," keeper Markus Roebke told a German newspaper, suggesting he be sent to a smaller animal park. "He's had so much contact with humans he doesn't realize he's a polar bear. It's not healthy."

Unless it is too late. Further removal of contact may just push Knut into further depression and bad behaviour. The Berlin Zoo created this mess, they need to clean it up and if that means that Knut's old handler has to be with him 16 hours a day then so be it. Whatever it takes to keep the animal happy and mentally balanced. Weening him off of humans is good if it leads to positive effects but if it causes behaviour problems they need to rethink their strategy. Knut didn't ask to be raised the way he was so the Zoo needs to step up to their responsibility here. It's like raising a dog from a puppy and then abandoning him. What do you think will happen?

This is BS. I took my son to the zoo last month and Knut looked fine. He was sleeping the first time we went by his enclosure and when we came back he was playing with his favorite tree and then went for a quick swim. He didn't try to eat anybody.

Yeah, and the picture is from March (poops)

You know what happens to abandoned dogs?

They go feral. Feral dogs can handle themselves pretty well. Is that what you are implying? We need to prevent him from being abandoned and reverting to instincts? Because that seems the end-goal of the animal-rights activist in the article.

Mind you, this whole article is based mainly on the word of an animal-rights activist.

Also, do you know anything about bears? Their mothers don't hunt for them their whole lives. At a certain point they part ways, only to see each other and not really recognize one another. There is no "weening" period. It's really just "get out of here, I've done my job, I'm not feeding you anymore".

Stop personifying animals.

Lookin' all cute and stuff. I mean the public just got all hot and bothered. It's not their fault. If the bear was ugly like say a rhino baby...Well none of this would have happened!
