soy_bomb: Barack Obama, continuing the trend of the Bush 3rd term.

Obama's going to give us more 9/11s. Every time another 9/11 happens, it'll more deadly, explosive, and destructive than ever before along with higher gas prices. If Obama gives his victory speech, there will be a banner that will say: Mission Accomplished. An Obama presidency will be like two Dubya terms fit into one.

It's a good thing we have that young upstart John McCain trying to bring a change of party and politics to the Whitehouse.

No, it's the Democrats fault for not letting the military, green berets, and the CIA into Pakistan. They didn't understand that until Obama came and it was too late by then.

Well, Veneman isn't a "guy," first off. But as the article said, she's been known to clash with the Democrats/environmentalists, which can't be a good thing for Obama's ticket. She doesn't deliver any demographics or any states - if you're looking for a female on the ticket, there are a few others who would be much better choices. They're talking about the selection of a Republican "bolstering Obama's unifying message," but they forget that you can't really have a VP candidate on the campaign trail who disagrees with a whole bunch of stuff that the top of the ticket believes in. And she's a relative unknown - her experience is in food and agriculture. At a time like this, do you really want your VP to be a food and agriculture person at the expense of foreign policy, economic issues, etc, etc, etc?

Choosing someone like [Veneman] doesn't hurt you with the Democrats. It just doesn't hurt you.

That's not true what with Obama's recent shenanigans on FISA and faith based initiatives. This would be the straw that broke the camel's back for pissing off some left wingers.

So far, the only thing I've read about her is that she was sympathetic with biotechnology companies.

(which is one of those issues I think the left bemoans needlessly)

I don't know the damn lady, but I wouldn't be surprised, or bothered if Obama picked a moderate Republican.

As someone who spends quite a bit of time on Liberal blogs, those that would ditch Obama. . as it were over the 'last straw' are stupid reactionaries that don't how to do anything but lose.

Winning is not defined by getting your way 100% of the time -- in politics it's defined by controlling the debate. And wholly, the debates of the last 30 years have been controlled by Republicans.

I support Obama for my 'feeling' he might have what it takes to drag Democrats back into leading debates -- rather than blindly following Republican leads down dark alleys.

In short, the 'left' that would be 'bothered' by this are looking for any excuse to be the opposition no matter who's in power.

My only point is that it is incorrect to say that he would not be hurt at all amongst Democrats. I didn't say whether or not the people who were turned away from him would be stupid, or even if there would be a lot of them.

I didn't say it had never happened, I said that it still might not be the best idea. Wallace also took office almost a year before Pearl Harbor - I would venture to guess that things might have been different if the election had been in '42 or '43.

Would putting Veneman on the ticket really be the best bet for Obama and Democrats right now? Politically as well as practically? I don't think so at all.

Besides, I can't imagine that she's even being taken seriously as a candidate. My guess is that the Obama campaign leaked her name so that if he went ahead and picked a man, he'd be able to say that he considered a few women for the job. (Clinton, Napolitano, Sebelius, McCaskill...Veneman.)

THIS. As a moderate leaning Democrat, I agree that people need to realize this is how politics works. It's basically a popularity contest and politicians will need to do different things to seek the approval of others. It brings the ugly side out of people and I've come to accept that

I think that Olympia Snowe would make an excellent choice as well. A moderate female Republican. Served on the Senate Armed Services Committee but is pro-choice, pro-gay rights. The big issue is that she has already endorsed McCain at least in the primaries.

Small threadjack but what's with Maine having all of these good Senators? You would think with a small state they would be doing a lot worse.

/Snowe '12? She would be two years younger than McCain is now. I'd take her in heartbeat over Hilary.

if he were going to put a republican on the ticket for cross party appeal, he'd pick chuck hagel. if he wants a woman, he would probably be more seriously considering kathleen sebelius.

but i don't really think he wants to beef up his conservative cred with his vp. i'd imagine he'd rather get someone with progressive and/or libertarian domestic policy cred.

Ann Veneman. Interesting. The reporter fails to see the bigger picture. Choosing Veneman is making an aggressive play for the Western U.S., which knows her name very well. This says to the West--I understand your primary issues-which are land and agriculture-based.
