I'll be seeing them on Monday. I'm as excited as a schoolgirl.

So, are they planning to rob banks, steal babies and jaywalk while singing?

How exactly does he intend to veer from the path of "safety?" Maybe he could pick up where GG Allin left off.

I'm hoping they'll throw in a few covers of Gordon Lightfoot tunes.

So how do you make it dangerous to push play on a drum machine? You're in your 40s, Trent, the angsty 14 year old thing doesn't work for you any more.

Heh... I saw him in Providence in '87 ( I think...might have been 88). interesting, but mostly disgusting...

Actually saw the Murder Junkies last year in Providence as well... you'll be happy to know the GG spirit live on... at the end of the gig, the drummer, who played naked the whole time, rose from his drum set and had a girl in the audience shove both drumsticks right up his ass... he did tell her to "Go Easy", so I guess they've mellowed in their old age.

As for Trent Reznor...yeah, don't really give a fark what he does...

They're going to use an echo on the vocals. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Ick. I wonder how many cities they are banned from playing. That would run afoul of obscenity laws in many areas.

FTA:

About a third of the way through the concert, Reznor deployed some video screens, but not to enlarge his face for the cheap seats: sometimes the band played in front of a desert backdrop, sometimes the screens responded to the music with colored bubbles (like Guitar Hero in reverse), sometimes the musicians vanished behind a wall of static.

Sooooo... they're doing the same thing that they've been doing for the past decade? And how is that not lazy?

/I'll still see them; off to TicketMaster I go!

What do they have to do with anything?

They used to play alot in RI when I was in high school but I wasnt sure what happened to them (stopped listening to their stuff more than anything). I met the guys in the band a few times and they are pretty cool, hope they are doing well.

Personally I like being safe whether it be in a car or at a concert. I dont need smash into random people to have a good time at a show.

The one reason to see NIN this summer is the opening band. A Place To Bury Strangers is awesome. They sound like an early Jesus and Mary Chain with the distortion kicked up a couple notches.

Also, they put on a mean live show.

/NIN is ok too.

I saw NIN on the first Lollapalooza in 1991. They were far and away the most boring band on the bill -- and I came expecting them to kick ass. Halfway through their entirely pre-programmed set I wandered off for a $4.00 Polish sausage. I made it back to my spot just in time for Living Colour to peel my farking face off. Totally awesome.

Eh, I seriously don't get they hype behind the band. Granted, I will probably check them out later in the hopes that they get better production, but I thought Skywave was better (albeit, much more in debt to JaMC).

"I like that one NIN song where the singer is all mad and stuff and then the music gets quiet and he whispers about how bad he feels and then the music gets really loud and he starts screaming and it sounds all mad and angry and stuff and then it gets quiet again and then it gets super loud and he screams some more.

What's that song called again? That one kicks ass."

Wait, my assessment of the new NIN album is off-topic, but your story about growing out of NIN despite knowing Trent so well is more relevant? I thought NIN was the discussion. NIN live to be more specific. A new NIN live show would include songs from the Slip, which I like. You see how that works? Sorry if your brain couldn't make the leap in logic.

Any more played down anecdotes about rock stars you know or have met?

Seeing them on September 3, towards the end of the tour. Will be the fourth concert of theirs that I've been to, and Trent & Co. haven't disappointed yet. They put on a hell of a good live show. We took the plunge on general admission this time, which I'm sure will be much more interesting (and exhausting) at 34 than it was at 24.

Oh, and that set list makes me giddy. As a schoolgirl, even.

If you like even just a little NIN music, I highly recommend going to a show (if you can swing it in today's economy).

If you can't see a show on this leg...there will be more shows in Oct/Nov around the US I expect.

What makes the cost worthwhile to me personally:

a) The light shows. They're never the same for each leg. Sure the colors are the same for some songs (red for closer, green for reptile), but the display, the setup, the usage, always different.

b) The mix-up of songs. Closer + The Only Time (woo!). The Great Destroyer + Screaming Slave (from fixed) (AARRRH!!).

c) Set lists. Trent has a good backlog to go through. The old standbys will be there most shows (hurt, head like a hole, closer, march of the pigs) but you can never be sure when you'll get the big comedown or deep or sanctified. And it will be interesting how he incorporates the two new albums released since Year Zero last year. By all accounts it looks promising!

d) Trent keeps things interesting for his fans. In 2006 it was through an 'officially' paid fan club. But that didn't work out as well as he like so he opened it up to everybody for free. Go to nin.com and sign up. Get access to pre-sale tickets for the next tour leg. For 2007, the tour in Europe was the start of the Year Zero ARG. This year's tour started with geocaching and Google Earth, giving fans in the wider LA area a chance to attend the practice show at the Forum.

e) The fans themselves. While NIN does attract the crazy (me) and the crazy crazy (a few), the middle is pretty average in that they like the music and want to see a good show. So there is something about being a room full of these people, enjoying the music, singing along here and there, giving energy to the guys on stage and getting it back double-fold that is what keeps me coming back any time I can. The only caveat is that it's location-sensitive.

Some of the most interesting info to me came from the new bassist, Justin Meldal-Johnsen here at the talkbass.com forum.

Plus, Trent works really hard to make the best faces during the show.

/thread death!

Because people want danger when seeing a rock group.

Come for the music, stay for the random beatings.

I saw the tour opener in Pemberton, and although I liked their set on the With-a Teeth-a tour better, it was still really good. My favourite part was when he kept disappearing behind a wall of static on the video screen during one song. I can't remember which one, as it was a three-day festival and so I was intoxicated in a variety of ways the entire time.

tweak23 2008-07-29 06:39:12 PM
I went down to Seattle to see them on the weekend. I didn't find it a particularly "dangerous" show, but it was sonically and aesthetically beautiful. Mein bee eff is a huge, huge, huge NIN fan and he pretty much had a joygasm. Particularly when, in the encore, he "played" the transparent screen like a giant midi keyboard. It was like a live version of fruity loops.

He's still really, really solid and I'm impressed by all of the shiat he's pulling off totally independent of a record company, but dude has an established fan base. Lazy he's not but he's not exactly doing anything terribly far outside of what's expected of him.
