Bush Derangement Syndrome strikes again. I don't particularly like the guy, either, but some folks need to get a grip.

keylock71 2008-07-26 08:54:05 AM
That's unfair... despite the accounts of insanity, corruption and depravity, Caligula actually accomplished some positive things during his reign.

Exactly. We should let W do whatever he wants so that the Democrats can the same thing when Obama is president. That's a lack of accountability you can believe in.

Funny. Here in Appalachia I must constantly remind people -- or "folks," as we call them -- that "the rest of the country is not necessarily in this same bubble in which people think it is reasonable to describe the president as if he were Jebus."

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat [TotalFark] 2008-07-26 10:30:17 AM
Nero is more apt, I suppose.

I mean Caligula only want to make his horse a Senator, and if you leave off that Harriet Miers debacle, the comparison falls flat.

Magorn 2008-07-26 10:30:22 AM
No he's right Bush is not Caligula. Caligula was an able soldier and administrator before Tiberius drove him mad.

Commodus on the other hand......

and yes he's also right that people that think like that are in a bubble....right along with 77% of their fellow Americans

reilmb 2008-07-26 10:34:01 AM
Ya know I will just wager that most people in the rest of the country dont even know who Caligula is, so the comparison is way over their heads.

frankly, i'm a little amused that we're having to hear the BDS bullshiat again. over three-quarters of the country hates the man, i think it's time you get a grip if you still think it's some sort of derangement.

Do you feel the same way about conservatives who thought Clinton was evil long before they were even able to justify their hatred with the satanic blowjob of hell that he got?

Or does it only apply to people who happen to think torture is pretty gosh darn un-American?

I live in Texas, so I've had to suffer through the reign of stupidity longer ... but I don't "hate" Bush. I hate Cheney, Wolfowitz, Pearl, Rumsfeld .. but Bush was just a vapid talkinghead used by a cabal of neocons to aquire power and money. Bush is little more than a corporate brand logo, and has about as much say in the running of the White House as Ronald McDonald does in the running of McDonalds.

I admit it's been a while since I studied any Roman history, but I think you're right.
He accompanied his father on military expeditions it Germania (where he got the name Caligula), but I don't think he did any real military service.

And, again if I remember correctly, he got ill shortly after taking power, which many think was the start of the mental illness he became famous for (trying to make his horse a Sneator, sleeping with his sister etc).

Also I think many of the more outlandish accusations are really only recounted by political rivals and may not be true.

Could be wrong though, and I'm far too lazy (it's the weekend for christ sake) to look it up...

This stuff is just a shiny trinket to get our attention off the $300 billion housing bill that will provide cheaper home loans for 400,000 borrowers who are too financially risky to qualify for government-insured, fixed-rate loan.

SquirrelWithLargeNuts 2008-07-26 11:17:11 AM
Blaaargh. Anyway, I was going to say:

That's exactly why we should impeach him, so that he can't make those pardons and all his buddies/beneficiaries lose their protection when Obama gets elected.

Helen Mirren gives an awesome blowjerb in the 1979 movie.

If you don't believe me then you can probably down load it from your favorite P2P network. I seem to recall it is close to the 83 minute mark.

Custer: "Caligula was an able soldier and administrator before Tiberius drove him mad."

He wasn't a soldier. His father, Germanicus, was a highly popular general who was destined for the throne before dying mysteriously at the front. As a boy, Caligula was popular with Gemanicus' legions, who gave him his name (Caligula="Little Boots").

Germanicus' rival, Tiberius, who probably poisoned Germanicus, had a, ahem, thing for the wee tots. He is rumored to have taken young Caligula as a lover. That may be what he meant by driving him mad.

Either that or just refusing to farking die for 77 years, so Caligula could finally ascend to the farking throne already.

I'll agree that maybe hatred for him goes a bit too far... but I don't think it's exactly unwarranted. We're definitely going to be cleaning up his fark ups for a while. Democrat or Republican, whoever gets elected is largely going to be in a janitorial role.

Didn't Caligula balance the Roman budget by raising taxes on the wealthy?

People just forget what things used to be like after a while. You get used to it. It's easy to ignore that more Americans died in Iraq than in the WTC. It's very easy to ignore the wars in the Middle East. It's easy to forget you used to be able to go on the concourse at an airport without a ticket and eat lunch there. It's easy to forget about WMDs.

I don't even really remember what we're mad at him about.

Kucinich got a rock star welcome of whistles, hoots and clapping as he walked into the hearing room, holding hands with his wife,

Somehow, I think it was Mrs. Kucinich who was much more the recipient of whistles, hoots, and clapping...

Actually, he balanced the budget by forcing the senators' wives to serve in a government sponsored brothel.

I know that wasn't a question for me, but I'll answer it anyway. Yes I feel the same way toward extreme right-wingers. But that doesn't condone people forcing a connection between anything bad and Bush. If you read DailyKOs or Huffington Post, you may need to take a step back and open your eyes, just like you would if you listen to Limbaugh or O'Reilly.

I hate to break it to you, but I would wager MAYBE a whopping 15% of the country shares your particular opinion. A low approval rating doesn't equate to, "I hate him and he's a war criminal who should be tried and hanged."
