The Taliban have created a sophisticated media network to undermine support for the Afghan government, sending threats by text message and spreading the militia's views through songs available as ring tones, according to a report released Thursday.

Sophisticated, my ass. Get Lester Freamon on the case and he'll have the whole damn Al Queda organization tracked down.

Forced Perspective 2008-07-26 01:52:48 AM
So, basically, the way to thwart Al Qaeda is to trick them into switching to AT&T? Find all the telemarketers who were put out of work because of the do not call list and get them to the Pentagon!

I want a ringback tone of obnoxious Talibani propaganda music in Pashtun / Farsi. Payback for all the douchebags who have [insert latest boy band] or pop country blaring when I call them.

Its fluff not propaganda, ohh they produce materials to support their cause, that must be propaganda by the other side because no one would actually produce any such materials.

I mean serious what justifies this as propaganda, let alone from the whitehouse? That they create songs, record them and distribute them? Or that they use casettes, DVDs and fliers as well?

I think your judgement is blurred a bit on at least this one.

Where does the fear come from? That "they" can produce their own fliers or that "they" can master a DVD?

Maybe its that they know what a ringtone is. Yeah that must be it.

sigh

It's a pathetically transparent attempt at making you fear that the Taliban is again ascendent, that they're attempting to engender grassroots support and that if it's important enough for the White House to comment on it, it must be having some measure of success.

And you really believe that the whitehouse is all powerful and all knowing? I dont have so much faith in them. http://www.crisisgroup.org/home/index.cfm are the ones behind the report. Are you saying they are a whitehouse shill? Somehow I do not think that to be the case either, since it would require more ability by the whitehouse to maintain that conspiracy.

I DRTFA, so the "White House" angle was pulled from an above poster. Should've checked my sources. Sry.

As to the rest of it, no, I don't consider the White House to be omniscient. However, they're not attempting to sway me; they lost me a long time ago. They're attempting to keep the 23%ers pissing thier pants so they can continue to get carte blanche to do anything in the name of security. See also: terror alert level.

Some of the tunes are available as ring tones for phones, and cassettes include songs such as "Let me go to jihad," the report said.

Let me go to the Jihad!
Let me go to the war!
Buy me some C4 and I'll attack
Suicide bombers, they never come back!

So we'll shoot, shoot, shoot at the evilwesternSatanistinvaders
Then get some virgins from God
Oh it's 1, 2, 3, pull the pin
at the Old Jihad!

Headline made me LOL.

Don't know why, but the first thing I thought of was a terrorist's cell phone lighting up with "iiiif you want my body, aaaand you think I'm sexy, come on baby, let me know!", while he turns to the terrorist next to him and saying "That's the signal. Let's go." with a totally serious look on his face.

Yeah, an article on how the Taliban is making a comeback is clearly pro-Bush and not suggesting that the more important war was terribly mis-managed and ignored while we were wasting our time in Iraq.

/Why the hell would "pro-Bush propaganda" so strongly reinforce one of them Democrats' key arguments?

FTA: It said the Afghan government and its foreign allies should respond more quickly to their mistakes and highlight the Taliban's atrocities.

"Allies"? Try "ally". And since we can't get our US administration to admit its mistakes here in its home country, how likely is it to admit mistakes in Afghanistan? If the study is correct that a successful plan against the Taliban depends partly upon admitting mistakes, then I predict additional failures; the part of the plan involving admitting mistakes will never be implemented under the current administration.

Okay, let me get this straight--the Taliban are advertising via cell-phone jingle these days? These are the same Luddite morans who used to defenestrate people for owning a TV set.

We've at least managed to corrupt them with Western materialism. Who says we're not winning the war?
