...........dumbass subby:

Mail-in absentee ballots for this year's primary and general elections will cost Charlotte County voters $1 in postage.

But for those who have already mailed their ballot with only two stamps, fear not: Supervisor of Elections Mac Horton ensured Friday that your vote will still be received and counted.

Horton's office has reached an agreement with the local post office to ensure delivery of ballots that were previously mailed without the required $1 postage fee.

So it's a non-issue, first because it's postage to mail the ballot (farking duh?) and second because THEY COVERED IT ANYWAY.

It costs money for the gas to get your arse to the polls. With gas prices these days, the postage charge might be cheaper.

Hang on, so your Government, requires you to pay the postage on a absentee ballot? Every other country I've lived in, it's been freepost. You guys are... odd.

It's just Charlotte county. They're extra special up there.

We've had 100% vote-by-mail here in Oregon. It's awesome. You can pay the higher postage and mail it, or drop it off in many designated ballot "mailboxes" for free.

Best part is, since the whole state has 2-3 weeks to vote, the politicians don't know when to saturate you with ads, and you can tell the phone callers "I already voted".

Bonus: no Diebold

Wait, you have to mail in your absentee ballots in Florida? If you're in Florida, why would you have to have an absentee ballot?

Alien Robot 2008-07-26 01:15:32 AM
Everytime I used a mail-in ballot from overseas it had a postage-free envelope to put it in. I thought they were all like that. Is there a separate postage-free envelope for military only? It should be free for everybody, otherwise it's a poll tax isn't it?

PON RAUL!

Ron Paul would require you to use a private enterprise shipper, such as UPS, and pay upwards of $3 to vote.

Oregon stepped up & did a very cool thing during our primary elections in May. As you're probably aware, Oregon is a vote-by-mail state & right around the time of the Oregon primaries the post office raised the price of stamps. However, we were informed that the post office would accept & deliver ballots with the old postage stamps on them, with the state picking up the balance. That doesn't sound like much, but it was nice not to have to make a special trip to the post office to get some stamps with the correct postage. For those living in a rural area, that was an extra boon.

That was the worst headline I have ever read on Fark. However, I am proud of subby for being so industrious while clearly intoxicated. Therefore...

Actually for most people, it takes more gas to vote via the mail then to vote at the polls.

Polling places tend to be in local neighborhoods. Most people really don't have long to go. Voting by mail requires that you take your ballot to a public notary -- or at least my state does. For many people that will be a bank which they have an account with. That is usually not really bad either for most people, but on on average it is farther away than your local polling place. In person absentee voting will take the most gas since it can usually be done only in certain county government offices thus a farther drive unless you just happen to live next to the voting office.
