Obscure?

That site's directory structure is as odd as their music.

Took me a few minutes, but yeah, I remember The Residents. Medicine Man really sticks in my mind ;)

Residents

LEGACY

Period.

Never saw them live, but a band I was in opened for Snakefinger at a club in New Orleans. Seems like he showed one of their films before his set started. Used to have a yellow vinyl 45 of the Residents doing Satisfaction but it's unfortunately gone missing. It came out around the same time as Devo's version, and I thought it was funny that everyone made a big deal of how weird that one was -- it was nothing compared to what the Residents did to the song.

Pope George Ringo: Think I first saw this on Night Flight back in the olden days.

That's where a lot of people first saw them.

They're an interesting group, managed to keep their identities hidden for close to 40 years now. And always managed to stick with what they do.

The Trocadero show on October 8 would be quite feasible. Luckily I have several months to contemplate this baffling decision...

millia 2008-07-25 09:46:27 PM
My goodness! Yes, it promises to be an interesting show - and album - and they are apparently going to be having some sort of internet-connected activity relating to it in early September.

If you've ever wanted to see a Residents show, GO! Trust me, if you're interested enough to want to, you'll love it.

/Seen them about 20 times, I think. 18? 19? Somewhere in there.

I probably will. I just like to go through the motions of contemplating something for several months.

Damn, millia, that is amazing! I should hate you, but no! I can only stand in awe... very cool. Reckon I'm going to have to consult with some Brooklyn friends about those NYC shows.

22, as it turns out.
I plan my vacations around Rez shows, is how that happens. That, and a plane ride or two.

Yes, I'm a wee bit touched. Should see them in NYC this time.

/buy or die!

I've just been around a while. I wish I could have seen the Mole Show, but I wasn't quite old enough...

Go! Apparently, the place in NYC only holds about 500 people. The Gould(?) theater for Cube-E was awesome. And the really nifty part is that the volume is never cranked very high any time I've seen them- even at the 9:30 club in DC, which has a reputation for causing deafness.

Most shows I could hear the singer from the stage and the speakers, both.

badhatharry 2008-07-25 10:01:37 PM
According to Wikipedia, these guys are from my home town. That is strange since their identities are secret. I wonder if I know any of them.

I'm actually in The Residents, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

/You can't prove I'm not.

Dr. Fritz Rotwang 2008-07-25 10:41:50 PM
The Residents are probably the greatest artists living today, whoever They are. Since 1972, they have been relentless ground breakers, influencing new forms like music video and CD-ROM at their inceptions, while every year pumping out multiple albums of stunning originality and relentless creativity. This new tour is only the 7th tour they've done in their 36 year history, and previous shows have each been unique creations that leave audiences with their minds blown.

Personally, I'm flying from Raleigh to New York to see this, and I' m quivering in anticipation. It is possible that I might be a fan.

Subby is to be commended for calling attention to this. However, the better page to link to would have been:

http://www.residents.com/files/0c75809be3281a9bc1d7a0e9bfde344a-97.html

This page gives some kind of hint of the idea behind the show and a description of a stage presentation that sounds like something very new. I don't want to judge it before I've seen it, but it sounds interesting to say the least!

This news is truly a cause for celebration!!!

I remember seeing them on Night Flight as well. Also, on David Sanborn's show in the late 80s. Just placed a call to a buddy in Chicago who shares my Residents fascination. Hopefully my first live experience will happen in October.

great album.

Ooo, the Residents. . . Unfortunately I'm uncool enough not to have heard of them until a friend sent me an MP3, but they are awesome.

Is The Commercial Album the one where every song is like a minute long? If so, that's my favorite.

/has 3-4 albums stashed away somewhere

Thanks for the heads-up, subby. I've seen The Residents twice and both shows were fantastic. More theatre than concert and almost impossible to describe. I've been a fan since the 70's, ever since I heard "Santa Dog". It's on my holiday playlist every year. The video for "Third Reich and Roll" is unbelievable (Link (new window)) and very like their stage show - haunting, challenging, surreal and hilarious all at the same time. I think their concept for The Commercial Album was and still is the most brilliant one ever put to vinyl. And the CD has extra bonus tracks of Elvis covers - what's not to like? If you have never seen them, they are one of the shows that should not be missed.

This is my favorite video of theirs: Simple Song (new window)

Seconded. That little descending melody that repeats throughout that record is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard anywhere. I'm proud to get it stuck in my head all the time, even when I haven't actually listened to it in a while.

Hey music nerd - is that *your* site in the profile? Looks interesting. I'm inclined to believe it might be worthwhile if the instigator knows the Residents as well as you do...

And for those of you who haven't listened to a new Rez record in a while, do check out Demons Dance Alone and Voice of Midnight. It's not like the old stuff, but it's still hummable, and it's still interesting lyrically.

Well, if you're going to make a categorical statement like that then you at least need to tell me what record you're talking about. Please?

They must love Santa Cruz!

millia Yes that's my site, and if you can write about any records by all means sign up there, you'll have a lot of fun.

StormDawg Not Available is the album's name, a good introduction to the Residents.

StormDawg 2008-07-26 01:57:12 PM
Music Nerd: You want a beautiful melody? Try the second movement of Prokofiev's Violin Concento No.2 in G Minor.

Got me beat. I've only been a fan for 23.
As for 99%, I thought I was doing pretty good until I saw the rrroar site. I've got all the music, in some form or another, but I'm not anywhere near complete as it turns out...

Of course it wouldn't. It will look completely different, and cool.

Dr. Fritz Rotwang 2008-07-28 06:29:49 PM
Indeed, dear Santa Dog! That is exactly my point. The new show will assuredly be weird and wonderful, but you can bet They won't be relying on the past for much of anything.

/Can't wait... freaking out!!!!
