Well I'm sure the name Orson Scott Card holds a lot of weight with the movers and shakers....

Who?

eddyatwork [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 02:03:23 PM
That sounds like a strong endorsement for RON PAUL to me!

Code_Archeologist [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 02:07:46 PM
Orson Scott Card has been a Republican since about 2000... he just calls himself a Democrat because it helps him sleep at night.

LarsThorwald [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 02:18:43 PM
That about sums up the kind of week McCain has been having right there.

Joelogon [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 02:20:39 PM
Orson Scott Card thinks he's a moderate and a Democrat, but he's neither. Also, he apparently went bonkers sometime between the period he wrote Ender's Game and 9/11/01.

jimmyhaha [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 02:34:44 PM
Wouldn't being a Mormon Science Fiction author mean you'd retyped "The Origin of the Species"?

You know why I'm watching Fox News on cable for war coverage?

Because I knew they would speak of our soldiers, of our victories and our losses and our goals in this war. I knew they would not speak of the liberation of the Iraqi people in quotes, but rather as the truth.

I'm watching Fox News because I knew the reporters and anchors would speak as Americans, to Americans. It's a good feeling to hear about our war from people who actually think it would be a good thing if we win.

Maybe the other media are covering the war the same way. But they long since trained me not to expect that from them, so why should I give them a chance now, when the lives of my fellow-citizens are on the line?

Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society. The goal of the polity is not to put homosexuals in jail. The goal is to discourage people from engaging in homosexual practices in the first place, and, when they nevertheless proceed in their homosexual behavior, to encourage them to do so discreetly, so as not to shake the confidence of the community in the polity's ability to provide rules for safe, stable, dependable marriage and family relationships.

It's more like Orson Scott Tard. (Yeah, I went for the lame joke)

After all those pages I read of that whiny Brazilian biatch complaining about her life in Portuguese over and over and over and over while Ender tried to save the goddamned Ant-people and pig-people, I have to say that I'm tired of reading anything from OSC. Including political "commentary".

Ender's Game is a hell of a book though.

From TFA:

Dear Senator McCain,

You have a lot of people pushing for you to choose Mitt Romney as your running mate.

Don't do it.

He brings nothing but negatives to a McCain ticket.

You'd think a science fiction writer would know that two negatives equal a positive.

The guy is correct, however, McCain's real problem is that evangelicals will not be fired up to get out and vote for him no matter who he picks as VP. Unless zombie Jebus himself becomes available.

No matter how you spin it, he is not one of them.

I also like the fact that the same person who made that statement wrote with such homoerotic undertones to most of his early works (or perhaps still writes that way, I gave up on him for a crazy a few years back.)

Now I'm not saying that Orson Scott Card is a self loathing closet case, but...

No, wait a minute... that's exactly what I'm saying.

bglove25: Speak no evil of GRRM.

I say unto you "Nay".

GRRM needs to sit his cheeseburger loving butt down and finish his damn books. Forget a brazillion public appearances, forget "WildCards".

The last thing we need is for him to die before he can finish the series. Then some hack like R.A. Salvatore will finish the stories based on GRRM's "notes"

Then we get a showdown between Sandor Clegane and Drizzt D'Mary Jane where Drizzt wins all angsty-like and then Chewbacca, Arya Stark and Jon Snow all get blown up by the Star Wars plot device villians of the week and the Greyjoy's.

He doesn't owe his fans appearances - he owes them books. This is the man who made fantasy novels readable again.

I'm about certain of it. I LOVED Ender's Game when I was younger and didn't find out OSC was an asshole until about a year ago. Read up on him and his essays and he seems to fit the "I wanna suck a cock so bad its driving me nuts but I can't because God won't allow it" Republican mold.

Sad really.

Knew without looking that it was Orson Scott Card.

Love his works. Hate his politics. As someone said above, right after 9/11 he went batshiat insance and drank the "Terrorists are everywhere... even under your bed!" kool-aid.

Cozret 2008-07-25 04:37:04 PM
Yes, Yes, we know Card is a loon. He is the perfect example that people that have no understanding of reality can write entertaining fiction.

Alastair Reynolds is Welsh, so he's not only crazy, he has a tragic vowel deficiency only overcome by years of hard work.

Yep. I really believe the "Never meet your heroes" thing. Honestly, had I known how he is before reading his shiat, I wouldn't have read it and definately not bought it. I don't like to feed dickheads.

Ben Stein is just a whore for money. He doesn't believe anything.

David Mamet's essay about his conversion or whatever I STILL have to believe is a fake. It looked like it was written by a 7th grader.

Orson Scott Card is a freeking hack who got lucky with Ender's Game. The rest of the series, and everything else he has written, is just badly desguised Mormon mythos in Science Fiction format.

I liked Ender's Shadow, and that was weak on the mormon stuff. Very heavy on authoitarian government love though.
