Lamar Smith (TX-R), FTA: "Nothing is going to come out of this hearing with regard to impeachment. ... That's because there is no evidence to support impeachment."

There's evidence he failed to comply with the legal obligations of the presidential records act, which would have provided material evidence for the investigation of many other offenses. I'd say "impeach 'em", if only to try and warn the corrupt that the only thing more dangerous than a paper trail is a missing paper trail.

It isn't going to happen, folks. This is a waste of legislative time.

First, they won't get the numbers they need to impeach.
Second, there isn't time enough. Bush is gone in six months. Why impeach him now? All you'll get is a couple of months of Cheney vetos.
Third, right before the impeachment, Bush will pardon everyone in his administration down to the guy who scrubs toilets. Once he is removed, Cheney will pardon him.

The only way there will be any prosecution of Bush is to wait until after he leaves office. Even then, I bet whoever is president will pardon him. Here is why:

McCain will pardon him the same way Ford pardoned Nixon; preserve GOP sentiment. It will buy him points from the 28 percent, and he needs that support.

Obama will do it because it will be a distraction from his administration. For all that he has promised, the more time his Congress spends time deliberating this matter, the less he will be able to get through while his ideas are fresh, new and possible. As an added bonus, he can make a speech about reconciliation and forgiveness that will be a watershed moment. Whether or not you like Barack, you must admit this is a man with capacity to make a damn good speech.

What should be happening now is:

1. Sensible Dems and Repubs should be putting together their alliances now. Either person in office will need a "gang of 14" to keep up the seeming of bipartisanship.
2. The time will come when party dinosaurs will be out in the cold. Folks like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, who have led an astonishly unpopular Congress will be isolated, just like the bozos that came before them. These folks should be looking to back out peaceably.

fizzix_is_fun 2008-07-25 02:49:03 PM
Everyone seems to forget that the law doesn't apply to Bush. You actually think the Democrats want to remove the 'above the law' status of the executive branch right when they're poised to take control of it. Of course not.

Maybe they'll fire SC justices too, so they can get control over all three branches.

Darconix: But there is ample evidence that the "Bush lied, people died" mantra completely ignores President Clinton's and Vice President Gore's statement affirming their belief in a weapons of mass destruction program.

I notice they didn't invade, though. Funny thing, that - it seems like such a small point, and yet it makes all the difference in the world.

Actually, it wasn't made up at all (new window).

the difference between those statements and President Bush's is that after Clinton's presidency, Saddamn let the UN weapons inspectors in, who looked and looked and could find nary a WMD, and Bush ignored that evidence and demanded Saddam declare all the WMD'S he had. And Saddam DID. And Bush metaphorically tore up that report and told Saddam he'd better come Clean or else, and that he'd better let NEW weapons inspectors in OR ELSE. So Saddam did, who promptly again found nothing. So an Bush then threatened Saddamn that if Saddam didn't- aww -screw it I'm just gonna try to kill you with a massive bomber raid....

Meanwhile Bush was feeding a staeady stream of intel to Congress-including the Democrats-on Saddam's WMDS but was conveniently ommitting all the CIA reports that cast doubt on the veracity of the intel.

So yeas a lot of people who didn't know better said some outlandish thing about Saddm's WMD's but they were mislead, I maintain deliberately, by Bush, who insisted on seeing the raw intel feed , and thus knew better

In the last few threads I've seen you in you have consistently posted the dumbest statements in the thread. It is not a right wing/left wing thing. It is not a "OMG troll" thing. You have no grasp of any of these topics.

For example, your link. Yeah, Clinton and Gore said they thought Saddam had WMD's based on intelligence reports. But they didn't INVADE THE COUNTRY. The didn't even make a big push for it. That's the inconvenient little fact you seem to be ignoring. Under them intelligence was continually gathered as they felt they had no real cause to go to war.

And I think Clinton's impeachment was retarded too. But look at the sheer amount of time it took to get to that point. For something as simple and trivial as the definition of the word "is". This is no obstruction charge - the book is getting thrown at Gee Dub. By the time they can get this through, he wont be in office anymore. The best thing that can be done to W is to keep any bit of governmental win from him. Keep him up as a lame duck. Anything anyone can do will have its best chance of success after he is out of office.

out Curiosity what did clinton Lie about during Waco? IIRC ATF was serving an arrest warrant on a domestic terrorist for stockpiling illegal weapons when said terrorist ordered his followers to open fire on the arresting officers killing 4 of them.

Apparently you're unaware that the cult members who escaped were determined to have committed justifiable homicide by killing the ATF members.

And calling a bunch of wackos who mainly kept to themselves "terrorists" is risible.
