(Slate) Asinine LA Times prohibits its bloggers from writing about John Edwards, since his affair is just a rumor reported by a tabloid. Too bad they aren't a newspaper that could investigate it themselves to confirm or disprove the rumor. Oh, wait   (slate.com) divider line 66

Gagging bloggers doesn't necessarily mean they won't investigate it. Maybe they, I dunno, want to make sure they have their facts straight? Given that this would be a huge story I think that's appropriate. There is still a difference between blogging and actual reporting.

Why would it be? Unless he committed a crime somewhere along the line, this really is only a huge story to him and his wife.

How does stopping bloggers until there are actual facts preclude the ability to investigate for actual facts?

So the same tabloids that are reporting this are say that the Bushes will be getting a divorce because the President has been having an affair with Condi. How long should I wait for the La Times to investigate and then report on this story?

I don't think anyone really gives a shiat about John Edwards, maybe if this all came out a few months ago..If you go out on the street and ask 100 people who John Edwards is 75 would say "f*ck all if I know" 22 would say "that guy who talks to dead people" and 3 would give you the answer you are looking for...

In today's media atmosphere where anything goes, censoring bloggers from their opinions (granted, most are partisan asshats), this reeks of protecting a liberal democrats, even though it most likely isn't. Dumb move.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 03:48:30 PM
Edwards and/or the story itself are not what would make it "huge." It would be the dogpile and the average person's prurience.

But that wasn't really the point I was trying to make. My point was about the Times.

otherginger 2008-07-25 03:48:59 PM
It's a story if Edwards is being considered for Veep or DA. If he is tarnished by a "cheated on cancer wife" story then Obama will not feel comfortable appointing him.

albo [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 03:49:01 PM
nah, couldn't find one. but a blogger did post a story on her
Link (new window)

who cares about him and why didn't they respect his privacy? an affair has nothing to do with his fitness as an actor.

A little consistency, please.

Yes, because Drew personally reviews all submissions and decides not only which ones get greenlit, but writes the headlines himself.

To the 24-hour news networks it would be. They have to fill that time with SOMETHING, and it sure as heck isn't going to be in-depth non-partisan analysis of actual issues.

/Still haven't figured out why not, in truth.

If the women involved in this story (wife/supposed mistress) were making accusations there would be something to write about. As far as I've seen, they aren't.

This is, what, the fourth or fifth Edwards affair link greenlit in two days, including two to Mickey "Goat Blower" Kaus. Not only is the shiat repetitive, it's lacking the funny.

maybe you should ignore it, then. Fark has a bunch of other tabs with hundred or more links posted every day. i'm sure you'll find one you like, such as:

I'm as surprised by human folly and vanity as I am interested in it. Which, foolishly and vainly, sometimes is a little. I googlied the woman in question to make my pronouncement on her superficial desirability which will be delivered shortly all the major news agencies but I'll break the news here:

meh.

And that's not even weighing the risk factor. Ah, we could forever argue what beauty is but that's what Foobies is for.

Actually, no. They're firing people literally every month (new window) and it's still not enough to right the ship. Expect to see it go under or bought out by a Rupert Murdoch type very soon.

My point was that the content of Fark is a communal effort.

You're dodging my original comment (unsurprisingly, since there's no way to honestly rebut it). Fark's elevation of not-news is terribly entertaining, more so since it's done in a tongue-in-cheek manner. But this specific feeding frenzy isn't intentionally ironic, it's crossed into blatantly hypocritical. Which is fine; this is Drew's site, I'll still come back day after day, and Fark will get credit for the page clicks. I just felt the need to point out the absurdity.
