(Some Guy) Amusing Sen Chuck Grassley's investigation into whether televangelists are embezzling from their churches has inspired the GOP's sense of integrity so much that they took away his vote at the state convention   (pandagon.net) divider line 38

Huh. GOP and integrity in the same sentence. Next I suppose you'll juxtapose evangelical and morality

I have a simple solution... tax all churches, temples, and mosques.

I heard this awhile ago, and thought they had since restored his status.

Regardless, it's a silly way of being vindictive. And I hope Grassley uncovers some real good dirt on these wealth-making machines disguised as churches.

TIME did a story on those people about a year ago. They had pictures of their houses and cars. Many of them had their houses Tax-exempted for religious reasons.

antidisestablishmentarianism: It's sickening what they get away with. And how distinctly unChristian it is.

We have The Holy Land Experience here. It's a freakin' theme park, and they are tax exempt. So wrong on so many levels.

I see nothing wrong with taking people's money and making them feel good at the same time. If they can't see that their preacher is taking them for all they've got, they'll get dooped by some other scam artist.

Nestea Plunge: Jesus Christ wants you to buy me several corporate jets.

Reminds me of the South Park with the Marklars. Pat Robertson gets on TV and says "I need six billion dollars for an Interstellar Battle Cruiser to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ."

If I weren't so ethical, I'd be faking religion to gain money and power as well. I'd also start a camp for 18 year old girls to teach them how to be good, Christian wives.

I don't see the problem with that. I know many Evangelical Christians that are loving and morally upright people.

You just don't see them on television, is all.

It's beginning to become a given that any Republican who displays common sense and works for responsible governance will be marginalized by their party apparatus.

Grassley's another one of those guys who, though I rarely agree with him, is a decent Senator and genuinely cares about his country and its well-being.

I sincerely hope that the Republican Party gets absolutely curb stomped out of existence this November. We need an actual center-right party in this country to work with, that doesn't spend all its time picking on guys like Sen. Grassley, Rep. Flake, pre-crazy Sen. McCain, and the other decent legislators who are being isolated by their party's machinery.

TheXerox [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 12:52:00 PM
This is being made out to be more than what it actually is. The only people who are making a big stink about it here in Iowa is the Iowa Democratic Party. I actually know one of the party delegates and they said that they were under the impression that Grassley stepped down so someone else could do it this year.

IMO, this is nothing more than the other side making a mountain out of a molehill. Grassley is a popular guy here and nobody, especially those in the Iowa GOP, would think about trying to spite him over something like this.

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. -- Luke 16:19-25

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. -- Matthew 19:23-24, Mark 10:23-25

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. -- Luke 6:24

Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. -- James 5:1

Because it is not their money? It is a non profit corporation's money that they were happy to take the benefits, without obeying the few rules required to avoid the corruption of evil men. Alas those rules state not putting all your family and friends on the board to give away money, not using it for personal gifts such as houses, cars, jewelery, private jets, makeovers and certainly not spending the church's money on private oil company shares for your family and then claiming the money made of it is all their's now. Thats called embezzling and money laundering amongst the various crimes.

These corrupt forces who bring out new age help books full of garbage and one or two bible quotes, sprout lies pretending they are prophecy and making basic assumptions that somewhere in a crowd of 20000, one of them may have had an affair is tripe. Then they wish things were like there were back in biblical days. They better hope not since they would have all been stoned to death.

Note to aspiring psychologists: these are what sociopaths look like: eyes cold, calculating, their smiles learned behaviors instead of natural, their gaze the same looking at you as they would a piece of furniture.

They should all be shot like any other predator lurking in our midst.

The Repubs are pretty much stuck with the Christians, since the nutjob Dems don't respect anyone with religious beliefs that don't involve animal sacrifice.

Such a theme park would be alright with me if the "rides" were as follows:

1) The flood
2) John the Baptist
3) Crucifixion
4) Three Days in a sealed cave.

Paula White, Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Eddie Long, Kenneth Copeland, and Benny Hinn all came under the microscope of Grassley's Senate Finance Committee investigation.

Throw every single one of these bastards in jail. It doesn't surprise me the only Republicans worth anything in Congress are ostracized or leaving at the end of their terms. One guy bothers to attempt doing his job and this petty, underhanded crap is what he gets for it.

I've only been once myself. But if you do find yourselves there I would definitely check out Mary Magdalene's Wild Ride. And King Herod's Musical Review is quite cheeky.

Good on him. I have some issues with Grassley on some issues, but I've rarely had reason to question his dedication. There are some hinkey issues with some of his votes, but for divesting himself of the Religious Right, good on him.

That party is long gone...Reagan sold the soul of the Republican party to the religious right. As long as people in your party keep supporting these guys, they're not going to abandon the evangelical vote. It's going to take a few election cycles of losing before anybody in the GOP stops to re-think that strategy. It's the same strategy the Democrats had for a long time in allowing the Dixiecrats in the party - they sacrificed the integrity of the party to win votes for the presidency. Whatever gains they got, the damage to the legacy of the party just wasn't worth it.

Sure, a fool and his/her money are soon parted. However, they should not be tax exempt. If you are going to profit out of the mass idiots, you can at least pay tax.
