Tenet's memo also authorized the use of both "enhanced techniques" and "standard techniques," and said no other methods could be used "unless otherwise approved by headquarters."

This administration should be ashamed of themselves...

The fact that they chose to twist language and use terms such as "enhanced techniques" shows that these jackasses knew what they were doing was wrong and were trying to white-wash their actions.

Anybody who supports these actions has no basis to biatch and moan the next time a US soldier or civilian is captured and tortured by their captives.

I wonder how I get this 'good faith' legal precedent - seems useful.

"Mr. McBun, you are charged with fifteen counts of murder in the first degree. There are hundreds of witnesses and DNA evidence linking you to the crimes, and videos of the crimes were found in your home - any words in your defense?"

"Yeah, uhh, I didn't do it."

"You are free to go."

What despicable bastards.

"legal opinion signed by then-Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee was issued the same day he wrote a memo for then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales defining torture as only those "extreme acts" that cause pain similar in intensity to that caused by death or organ failure."

Maybe this guy should not be tortured, if you know what I mean...

Torture doesn't work. Ask Senator McCain.

Interrogate them using drugs if you have too. As for the people in Gitmo, either chrage them and try them, or let them go.

ISofaKingWeeToddDid: And who's surprised?

Frankly, I'm a little surprised they were actually worried enough about getting caught that they asked for permission. Turned out to be a pretty smart move. Oh well, it's legal, I guess there's nothing anyone can do about it.

the original Bynee memo defining torture is a classic case in point, when you read it, its clear that it wasn't a serious attempt to answer a legal question as it was to justify a foregone conclusion. (new window)

Had a 1st year law student submitted something as poorly sourced and reasoned he would have failed legal writing.

And this is how you know all those brave Terror-fighters int he Bush Adminstration are really cowards who lack the courage of their convictions:

The standards used to judge how physically rough an interrogation could be are blacked out. But interrogations that stress a detainee psychologically or emotionally were not allowed to cause "prolonged mental harm." That was defined as harm lasting months or even years after the interrogation.

There are at least some (^) people trying to hold Bush & Co. responsible.

Friday July 25th, Dennis Kucinich will present evidence to the House Judiciary Committee on the abuse of power of the Bush Administration so Congress can decide whether to investigate impeachable offenses.

The system of checks and balances is clearly failing here (and in many other recent cases.) How is having someone to stick up for the motherfarking Constitution a bad thing? Somebody tell me, please.

Have all conservatives forgotten what their party used to stand for?

conservatives have always been for *selective* use of the Constitution. When the ACLU sticks up for, say, gays - well, that's when they lose what little conservative vote they might have had.

/don't get me wrong - everyone wants to destroy those parts of the Constitution that don't exactly meet their particular ideology.

uuuh...it IS torture. I notice this language creeping into the media more and more. I guess folks who know right from wrong are now 'critics'?

If waterboarding were used on US POWs, there would be more critics.

IT's hard to get anything done with the president can ignore the law, and his buddies in congress block you just because they can.

Everytime the Dems try something, the Republicans slander and then block them, even if the dem's are doing the right thing.

Interesting. Ex-AG Alberto Gonzalez can't seem to get a real job even in Texas, while Bybee is now a Ninth Circuit judge.

Bloody William 2008-07-25 09:56:42 AM
Okay, why are so many right-wingers psychotically anti-ACLU? Especially when the topic at hand is the issue of torture and due process, and not the hot button of religion? I can sort of understand when fundies say "Grrrr, the ACLU wants to get Jesus out of the classroom!" even if I disagree, but I just can't wrap my head around, "Damn the ACLU for keeping the government from detaining people without due process, and torturing them! Un-american pussies!"

Also, sigdiamond2000, maybe we all should declare a short moratorium on sarcastic right-wingery. We're reaching the point where pretty much any deranged thing we say can conceivably be taken seriously.

Oh, okay. That makes whatever we do alright then. Y'know, as long as we don't cut off our detainees' heads and put it up on Youtube.

/And Al Jazeera is a news agency, not an "Islamist web site."

The only reason anyone is immune to prosecution after having committed war crimes like torture, from the lowest CIA operative to the highest elected official, is because we the people approve it.

The government can't give out permission to torture, but the only thing stopping them is us. So, maybe they can.

If they wanted to pursue articles of impeachment, they could and Bush could do nothing. Pelosi has already stated they won't go down that rabbit hole. Interesting note in the wiki:

A report suggested that representatives of Nancy Pelosi and American Israel Public Affairs Committee would "guarantee" Kucinich's re-election if he dropped his bid to impeach Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, though Kucinich denies the meeting happened.[76][77] It was also suggested that Kucinich's calls for universal health care and an immediate withdrawal from Iraq made him a thorn in the side of the Democrats' congressional leadership, as well as his refusal to pledge to support the eventual presidential nominee.[71] (new window)
