"I would strongly advise [them] to withdraw it immediately so as to avoid being caught up in something much bigger than they may have anticipated."

That's a rather disrespectful thing for a police Superintendent to reveal about Dr. Rice's cooter. No wonder the poor woman can find a man to marry her.

FTFA: "It is unfortunate the police have threatened students for essentially a form of peaceful protest and civil disobedience."

When Dr. King and his followers practiced civil disobedience, they knew they could be arrested. That was the point, to show how asinine the laws were. If you're not willing to be arrested for something you believe in, do you really believe in it, or are you just trying to be famous?

time for extraordinary rendition. I could see a comedy movie made about this. Some kiwis attempt to kidnap Rice and collect the reward. Hilarity ensues. Make sure to give Neil Patrick Harris a cameo.

Why not? The rest of us do. Too much shampoo in that bottle? That's an arrest. Asking to have your laptop returned to you? That's an arrest. a bottle of water? Oh, you better believe that's an arrest!

Intersting how these pseudo-intellectuals never offered rewards for the arrest of members of the Saddam regime back in the day. You do not see them burning the Chinese flag at its New Zealand embassy over Tibet or demanding that Chavez be prosecuted for suppression of, imprisoning of college dissidents in Venezuela. For some reason President Mugabe of Zimbabwe does not seem to be a target of ther anger.

blockhouse 2008-07-25 08:16:22 AM
FTA: AUSA had said the arrest would be for Dr Rice's role in "overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation" of Iraq, and crimes under the Geneva Conventions Act 1958, and the Crimes of Torture Act 1989.

One, the invasion was legal, as it was sanctioned by the US Congress. Two, the invasion occurred in 2003, when Colin Powell was Secretary of State. Three, the "continued occupation" of Iraq is under the purview of the Department of Defense, not the Department of State. Four, the current (legitimate, democratic) government of Iraq isn't exactly trying to throw us out. Five, the Geneva Conventions Act and the Crimes of Torture Act are laws in New Zealand, and have no jurisdiction over acts allegedly committed in Iraq or America.

Stupid New Zealanders, thinking their laws apply everywhere around the world. Who do they think they are, Americans?

I heard Zimbabwe is the new India. They'll work 600 hours a week and pay mill owner permission to come to work ... erm, I mean , they'll cover all your technical support requirements for 50$ a month in Food, water, smokes, booze and medicine.

The Saddamn's Bathists, china, chavez, Mugabe, all pay lip service to socialism, which these transnationalists belive in, America's capitalist system on the other hand is truly to be despised more than anything else.

I believe what happened is the nice policeman informed them that not only would the citizen performing the illegal "citizen's arrest" be brought up on charges, but so would they - for offering someone else a bounty to break the law. No different than offering a bounty to have someone assault or kidnap your ex-wife.

So apparently THESE douchnozzles were - just trying to be famous.

That's because when protest against or throw urine-filled balloons at REAL bad guys, you might suffer more than a polite arrest and a stern finger-wagging from the local magistrate.

BraveNewCheneyWorld 2008-07-25 08:24:00 AM
It's pathetic how the authorities, at least in the U.S., should have arrested these people long ago. Our current leaders have admitted to performing acts our own country has executed people for in the past(waterboarding), yet mid level authorities won't carry out their duty, and arrest a criminal leadership out of fear of job security. On the other hand they're perfectly willing to arrest you for doing the job that they lack the moral fiber to perform.

Actually, I more saw this as being timed because she's coming to visit. If Mugabe were coming to visit, I'm sure they would have had some "hilarious' protest there too.

Does she have diplomatic immunity on this trip? It would be amusing to see protestors arrested for violating international law by illegally arresting her for violating international law. (Because this is Fark and we like our irony.)

I lived in Auckland until 7 years ago. Man, I used to remember the Dictator Marches they'd have down Queen Street! How we'd climb up on the awnings and throw adoring flowers to the strongmen! *swoon*

Well she couldn't broker a ratified constitution in Iraq (the Sunnis never ratified the fake government now in place) but this paves the way for a visit to New Zealand which will be quite the diplomatic feather in her cap.

Maybe finally she'll get a medal. Why won't Bush give her a medal?

He's still sifting through the 8' high stack of medal requests submitted by John Kerry last year for various injuries as burning his tongue with his coffee and clipping his fingernails too short.

Umm, except that their reward scheme is not "civil disobedience" (which is purposefully breaking a law perceived to be unjust). Their scheme is perfectly legal within the laws of NZ. So, in this case, they should not fear arrest or heavy-handed tactics of simply being told to "stay away." So, why don't you take your little pre-packaged rant about civil disobedience and save it for a thread where it actually applies. KTHXBYE.

Of course no members of their respective regimes have ever been to New Zealand and it is not like China (or any of the rest of them) has an Embassy there to hold protests at and maybe attempt to arrest the ambassador for what happens in Tibet or their support of the Sudanese regime.

In South Korea student protests are consider a right of passage. If your graduating class does not hold mass protests over something (does not have to be over anything improtant, and they never accomplish anything) and get the sh*t beat out of it along with water cannons and pepper spray by riot police then you are slacking. In the US they have spring break.

If only we could backhand the REAL brats before they turn into high-powered neoconservatives whose antics jeopardize international politics and worldwide economies.

But, but... there were protests when the Chinese Premier visited. The police parked a bus in front of the protest so the Premier would not see them. They do denounce Chavez, for not being a true Socialist, and they certainly don't like Mugabe (but then, he doesn't have any visible support in most commonwealth countries).

They were also organising petitions to liberate the burka-clad women of Afghanistan before you even heard of Osama Bin Laden, and they're about the only ones I hear complaining about Dafur.

Sure, these pseudo-intellectuals don't seem do anything that helps solve the problems they protest. But don't say they don't do anything.
