Wonderful. Now we're going to have to listen to Alex Salmond and the rest of the SNP preening and making demands on Downing Street, well, more than usual at least. I'm all for independence, but I want to mercilessly beat Salmond every time he opens his mouth.

Sadly, I think after 18 years in the wilderness, Labour fell into the same traps as the Tories and started to expect the vote to go their way based on past results rather than active electioneering. Oh well.

no, i think after being in control of the country labour proved themselves to be every bit as corrupt as the tories with the added bonus of raping civil liberties while passing ineffective knee-jerk laws and giving the true criminals and the lazy a free and easy ride.

Which would be fine if the opposition wasn't led by the most smarmy, two-faced, bullshiat spewing empty suit of all time. My hope is that people can't face going back to the Tories yet, and the Lib Dems finally break through at the next general election. Definitely the least worst option at the moment.

Do you think they (the Liberal Democrats) have a legitimate shot at that at all -- at making any sort of serious inroads? I admit I don't keep up that closely, but that strikes me as an interesting thought.

I sort of feel sorry for Gordon Brown. Waiting impatiently for ten years, finally gets the job, and farks it up royally; Northern Rock, fuel and foot prices etc. For a man who was Chancellor, he sure runs a crap economy. Cameron's not much better, byt at least he's charismatic (albeit in a fake way). I'm not even sure who the leader of the Lib Dems is.

What the hell does any of that have to do with him being chancellor? An independent bank collapses, global fuel and food prices rise due to demand. Its one thing to just be a bad leader, its another to wait to be leader for years and then finally getting the job when everything is turning to shiat after the previous leader has decided 'graciously' to retire. Its the same thing that happened to Paul Martin in Canada.

I cant wait for the complete separation of Great Britain, then the world will have to deal with an listen to the economic and military juggernauts that are Scotland and Wales. Maybe then everyone on that stupid island will realize how alone they are internationally, get with the program and start doing something to improve the EU rather than just biatch about it

Thise things happening aren't his fault, but the way he's dealt with them (or not dealt) is his fault. Using taxpayers to bail the bank out, not reducing the mad amount of tax he collects on petrol and so forth. There's no point in him saying that other countries are experiencing problems too; at least other leaders are trying to fix them (Irish MPs have postponed the pay rise they were going to get in order to free up funding for example)

Then she's in, I guess -- she's been there for a good 2 or 3 years now. Plus her husband's a Scot, so there's that. They live right on the coast, and I think she's said they can see the islands from their place. Does that sound doable? All I know is that I'd love to make it over for a visit at some point.

apparently, the ferry to orkney leaves from John O'Groats-we flew in, so i cannot speak with authority on the matter. orkney is a very interesting place-lots of cultures have lived there over the centuries.

So Obama giving a speech in front of 200,000 Germans is "inconsequential", but the election results for a bunch of people to whom pants are still a pretty novel idea is somehow significant?

'Epic win'

Mr Mason said: "Three weeks ago the SNP predicted a political earthquake.

"This SNP victory is not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale.

"It is an epic win and the tremors will be felt all the way to Downing Street."

Who the hell is writing articles anymore? Bush = Batman in the WSJ, and a repetitive, lame metaphor in this.

Not on their own, but my guess is that when a Tory election victory starts to look inevitable, Labour will ditch Brown and start negotiating with the Lib Dems. I think a coalition government would have enough appeal to win, because I don't think people really want the Conservatives, but can't face more of the same from Labour.

I remember watching that. Easy mistake to make I suppose. British comedians and Canadian politicians are probably indistinguishable to Chinese people.

That's interesting -- thanks for your perspective, The Numbers. If nothing else, it sounds like that possibility would be bound to raise their profile more than a little bit. I'll have to try to watch things developing a little closer.
