Gaahl is quite the strange character. Gorgoroth isn't a particularly original black metal band, other than the imagery... and they've now split into two, mostly due to Gaahl's quirks.

The interview with him here is really interesting.

I'll check out the names in this thread. Does black metal typically have death grunts?

Burzum is great, but I'm not a huge fan of his later synth-based works.

All the bands mentionned have harsh vocals. High-pitched though, not gutteral a-la Death Metal.

goddamnit folks...
other than maybe an intro or something, synths and keys in black metal is ghey. Not gaahl gay, but against all the music is supposed to evoke, or invoke for that matter. If you are a black metal band and drag a keyboard on stage, you suck. Period. The Norse gods would strike you down if they saw that shiat. Ok, Emperor gets a pass, but only cuz their main songwriter has more notes going through his head for 15 seconds of song than an entire band's catalog. But the folky crap???? Please...keep Scandinavian folk out of my metal. That's like Slayer suddenly breaking out the fiddles and going bluegrass...might be entertaining for a minute, but I ain't gonna bang my head to that. Bullet belts? Silly, but fine if it's all in good fun. Chain mail (sp?) and swords? Seriously, Satan does not have time for this LARP-ing through the forest crap. Satan likes rock, alcohol, drugs, and chicks. Real simple. An occasional murder is right up his alley, but he'd rather be banging your daughter than getting blood on his awesome denim jacket (obscure?). And Burzum can continue to eat dicks in prison. Fark him. To paraphrase Bill Hicks, "I like my black metal bands dead." And some wonder why Venom are still considered gods. They had balls, attitude, and volume. Hell yeah, they couldn't play their instruments for shiat but they rocked. And your mother is going to be way more afraid of the blasphemy she CAN hear rather than the unintelligible garbage most black metal guys screatch out. Stop trying to summon the devil to give you superpowers and just start drinking and playing. Just by being human and having an alcoholic beverage in hand means that Satan is already heading your way.

I don't have time in this life to go over all that's wrong with all your opinions. It is a curse always being so damned right about everything.

botis: goddamnit folks...blah blah blah

When you've done your research and find out that Drudkh owns the living shiat out of typical faux-black metal, come back and we'll chat, mmkay? Mmmmkay. Venom is not black metal. Bathory and Darkthrone are the embodiment of the genre and they took it with them when they decided to start sucking. Venom are just pansies who wrote "thrashy" music for girls and marshmallowy boys.

Anyone who truly gets into this stupid shiat is a mindless sheep who would be wearing parachute pants and platform shoes if they they were shat onto this earth 20 years earlier.

/black metal sucks anyways
//KISS with slightly better music

Patterson: Venom are just pansies who wrote "thrashy" music for girls and marshmallowy boys.

Venom is one of the forefathers of Black Metal. They took what Sabbath started and played it with more speed and intensity than anyone. shiate, the term Black Metal was taken from their second album. Their later stuff may not be great, but Venom cannot be blown off as pansies.

One of the forefathers, maybe. The strongest link however is to Bathory's early material. It's more than occult-themed thrash, it takes the idea of dissonance and rough album quality and created a new genre out of it. Venom were merely playing a bit faster and muddier than the thrash of the time.

Where black metal as we know it begins is in the early 90's with Darkthrone's release of "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" and, more importantly, "Transylvanian Hunger".

All I'm saying is that it's too easy to say Venom started it. It's like saying the band Death started death metal. 2 bits of trivia everyone simply assumes is the truth when it is, in fact much more nuanced than one band starting it all.

However, if you were to pick the ONE band that made black metal possible, I'd say Bathory much more than Venom.

Dead as Dreams ftw times 586379865438924632. Drudkh have slightly dissapointed me with their latest releases. Their first two are still tops for me.

Negura Bunget rapes both of them imo.

Patterson: Drudkh have slightly dissapointed me with their latest releases. Their first two are still tops for me.

I think I prefer Drudkh's first over their second, though "Solitude" off of Blood in Our Wells is one of my favorite black metal songs, especially the guitar solo (which is odd, because I usually hate guitar solos in general and guitar solos in black metal seem especially out of place).

And since no one's mentioned them, I'd put Setherial's Nord... as the second best black metal album. It's like Emperor's ItNE done with class and sophistication.

Negura Bunget rapes both of them imo.

I never got into these guys. What's their best album in your opinion?

Their latest one is really good, but my fave is called "'N Crugu Bradului". It's easy to spot from their other albums because it's essentially four tracks named "I, II, III, IV", each about a season. The third track (fall...I think) is a standout for me, but they're all very good. If there's any album that might make you change your mind, that would be the one.

I've gotten further away from metal recently, so I find a lot of bands I liked at one time don't cut it anymore. But there are still some really great metal bands that stand apart from the pile of retreads.

To those who haven't seen the aforementioned VBS.tv black metal interviews, definitely check them out - well done and a good look into the real-world background some of these guys came from.

I suspect the Gaahl portion of the series is a bit exagerrated however, seeing as how the guy obviously has to keep in touch with bandmates & lawyers for the recent Gorgoroth split, but he's definitely a product of his environment: cold, distant, a little nuts and a little too serious about himself. If they didn't mention that he's the frontman for a band, you'd probably just think they found some older D&D geek to take them on a hike through the snowy forest of elves around his shack.

Also, Patterson & groverXIII: FINNTROLL!

So I suppose you are of the "if they can't shred like satriani, it isn't good music" ilk. Dude, if you can't get into the first 3 Venom releases, you just aren't metal. Hell, some of the greatest heavy music was made by 16-17 year old kids with a tape recorder, blasting away and barely staying together. I'll listen a thousand "shiatty" 80's demo bands before the sanitized protools crap passed off as black metal today.
Of course Bathory was more innovative and Darkthrone have taken the oldschool farther than most would try to go, but every single band that started what came to be black metal gives their allegiance to Venom. They took motorhead and discharge and put the perfect satanic icing on top. Welcome to hell is sloppy as your mom's kvnt (hah!) after an equine gangbang but it SOUNDS LIKE HELL. Literally, it sounds like what would be blasting through the speakers of the Pit while demons drunkenly rape and cavort through the fire. If they hadn't come along, we would probably have a lot more metal of the Judas Priest/Iron Maiden persuasion. Both good bands, both have some decent riffs, but lack any sense of tension or attitude. That's why people still talk about An*l C*nt and nobody knows who the fark Watchtower is.

what makes this funny is I hate 99% of black metal
Corpse paint is how you say "make up" when you're in denial.
Even though a lot of the "true" black metal bands did that, I think it's utterly retarded and makes me think of KISS every time I see one of those make-up-wearing, plastic axe-weilding, fake blood vomiting bafoons. Seriously, it's that kind of dumb shiat that makes people outside of metal think it's all so ridiculous and meant only for kids. Unfortunately, they're right most of the time.

I just like good music. I don't like listening to bands that are one step away from looking like LORDI.

Late to the thread as always, but Botis is spot on, Venom and Bathory started it, and others refined it.

Venom are still good at what they do, but they've been superceeded by the new crop.

Bathory (RIP) will never be surpassed and were fantastic til the end.

/All hail the Hordes!
