Bless them that they might grow old
Oh, and free them so that they may know
That it's never too late

I think Slash is the most overrated guitar player ever.

However, that doesn't make him suck either. And I have to say, that's probably the most impressive piece I've ever heard him play.

But if I can outplay him, he ain't that good.

Your profile says you are in a cover band. The difference between you and him may be the song writing. Not trying to be a dick and im sure you have wrote some rocking shiat but the guy created some essential rock anthems.

Rock on BTW.

I would never deny that or his relevance to rock history. In terms of that, one of the best ever. And I would never suggest he sucks because he doesn't. He's pretty good. And at times, he does have flashes of excellence.

And you're right. I've played in original bands and have a digital recorder next to me with a couple dozen tunes that nobody but me will probably ever hear. But it doesn't have much to do with my playing ability - it's my writing ability - two different things.

I like Slash and enjoy listening/watching him - I truly do. FWIW, I thought he was more technically proficient in VR as opposed to his GNR days.

You could capture him with a bottle of Jack Daniels in a mouse trap, but then you'd just get Fleas.

if we are going to technically proficient players than doesn't this take us to Yngwie Malmsteen territory?

The Mojo interview I read today had him at 42...

According to Wikipedia his birthday is July 23, 1965. That makes him 43...dammit, and I'm the subby. Massive dose of FAIL to me! Oh well, it's Slash and that kicked ass. Happy birthday anyway to him.

If technical playing were all that mattered, then Eddie Van Halen would be awesome. Same reason Eric Clapton sucks as well. You can have all the ability in the world, and still be Steve Vai.

My personal favorite is Duane Denison.

Nice guy? Lemme tell Ya. Slash stole My hubcaps back in the early 80's. All four of 'em. Yup, all four. ...And they were really nice ones too. That had three-prong spinners with the sleek blue & silver Buick logo in the center.
Dammit, I miss them 'caps. Since then My life has been a cycle of drug addiction, depression, alcohol abuse and self-mutilation.
Be damned, You Slash You.

To you. I think his playing is "soulful", you just might not be in tune with what he chooses to express. And by that, I mean some people choose to bend the ever living fark out of a note to make an emotional statement... others burst out with a flurry of notes or a sweep-picked arpeggio. It's subjective for the listener, obviously, but only the musician knows about the emotion actually expressed in the piece.

As for Yngwie, the dude loves music. His influences are clear in his playing, though he doesn't lack originality. He knows who he is and what style of music he will always play. And he appears content, even happy, with that, despite being a prick from time to time.

Me, I've always been a little more in tune with Jason Becker, Slash, James Murphy, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, and SRV. But I still dig the hell outta some Yngwie.

I can't believe he's still alive.

you shouldn't conclude that you are aware of the extent of someone else's ability.

Slash, and more importantly his playing in GnR was the reason I picked up the guitar in 1988, and his music continues to be one of the driving inspirations in my playing. He's my idol that way.

I have never met the guy, but he always came off as a cool dude, the sort you could have a beer with. I am currently reading his autobiography and I am just beside myself. Not only am I amazed that he still lives, but what an incredible asshole he was/is. I can't believe GnR managed to make it as big as they did. It came as a colossal disappointment to me, and yet after reading a couple chapters on the train ride home, I can't wait to fire up my rig and belt out some Rocket Queen or Nightrain. If you're remotely curious, read it. It's a page turner, but unless you're Steven Adler, it will shock you.
