The two upcoming Elton John shows in Halifax sold out in 45 minutes. That's why most of these performers are still going.

And Joni Mitchell still looks like a horse.

aden_nak [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 01:32:00 PM
Don't be silly, Subby. Nickelback has only ever made one album. They just keep releasing it with new album art every few years.

Bob_Laublaw [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 01:35:45 PM
Having seen Ray Davies last week, I'll disagree with his inclusion on the list. His newer work is great, unless fans expect his songwriting to be stuck in the 60s.

And that's the reason people create lists like this - they cannot handle hearing artists perform work that's "different" than what is expected.

/although Adams & Def Leppard haven't evolved at all

SchlingFo 2008-07-22 02:00:09 PM
They're missing because it's against the Geneva Convention to have Nickelback in any list that contains the phrase "Top ___"

Lorelle [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 02:00:23 PM
The only "artists" who should stop making albums are rappers, Justin Timberlake, and Britney and her clones.

How dare they pick on Sir Elton.

David Bowie is conspicuously absent. And for good reason. The man is aging gracefully (if not completely healthy).

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 02:14:21 PM
1. Madonna
2. The Black Crowes
3. The Who
4. Ray Davies
5. Joni Mitchell
6. Bryan Adams
7. Rolling Stones
8. Elton John
9. Carly Simon
10. Def Leppard

jimmyego [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 02:16:38 PM
The list:

Madonna
The Black Crowes
The Who
Ray Davis
Joni Mitchell
Bryan Adams
Rolling Stones
Elton John
Carly Simon
Def Leppard (see also, Whitesnake)

Personally I agree with Lorelle

Bob_Laublaw: And that's the reason people create lists like this - they cannot handle hearing artists perform work that's "different" than what is expected.

Disagree completely. The reason bands make a list like this is because they no longer write with any heart, meaning, desire, whatever you want to call it.

Yes, the theme to The Lion King is certainly different than Madman Across the Water. Its different because its safe, sappy, Disney crap.

CrankMyBlueSax: Farkin' link is blocked at work. Anybody care to post the list?

Farking list is spread out over 12 pages:

1. Madonna (Yes)
2. The Black Crowes (Didn't know they were still releasing new albums)
3. The Who (Haven't heard a new song out of them for years)
4. Ray Davies (Disagree, he's very good)
5. Joni Mitchell (Disagree, she's very good)
6. Bryan Adams (Eh, if he's not releasing power ballads someone else will)
7. The Rolling Stones (They are still touring, but releasing new records?)
8. Elton John (I'm starting to think this list is full of fail)
9. Carly Simon (Oh dear god what a terrible picture)
10. Def Leppard (My brother is a huge fan, and he seems happy, so disagree)

Overall, only about five of the ten (subby can't count) are still releasing albums, and two or three of those are still releasing good albums, or at least albums their fans would like. Crappy list on a crappy website. The only reason to click would be to see how awful Carly Simon has aged -- the California sun and plastic surgery are cruel.

The Who? They haven't release a real album in 25 years. Why isn't Rihanna on this list?

Snakes and Arrows is their second best album. They are doing quite well. I am surprised it took 18 comments before the inevitable Rush comment though.

Adman12 [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 02:41:03 PM
I'll tell you who should continue to produce new albums until the day of his death, and that's Tom Waits. Age only improves him.

Elton's "Songs from the West Coast" is a fantastic album; reminds me of the stuff he did early on. Didn't care much for "Peachtree Road," though.

Glasgowsfinest: Elton John should be made to just stop.

No! He keeps me going. I have to listen to at least one EJ song every day.

You guys haven't given him a chance. His early stuff is his best, but there has been some good stuff in recent years.

Recommended albums: Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Rock of the Westies, Blue Moves, Too Low For Zero, The One, Songs From The West Coast.

Madonna If you ever thought she was any good in the first place, her new stuff doesn't suck any more or less than her old stuff.

Joni Mitchell FAIL. She's recorded many beautiful songs in the last 30 years. She may not have had an album as classic as Hissing of Summer Lawns, Court & Spark, or Blue, but how man people do?

No Metallica? Extra FAIL.

In before Coldplay! (you Farkers are slacking!)

Daffydil: Oh, and what the hell is wrong with Nickelback? I like them.

SOME of their stuff is OK. A lot of it just sounds pretentious to me. Which leads me to: why the Coldplay hate? A lot of their stuff is pretty good. Guess it's a matter of taste.

4. Ray Davies Who?

6. Bryan Adams I think I'm gonna be sick...
7. Rolling Stones I'm surprised they can even walk.

THIS. I'd like to slowly press my thumbs into the eyesockets of the people that fight tooth and nail to keep bands like Motley Crue, Poison, and Def Leppard "relevant".

It's not your fault. Studies have shown that anyone who thinks they like Nickelback are actually suffering from a raging case of infected ear herpes. Pus-filled, swollen ear herpes.

Adman12: I'll tell you who should continue to produce new albums until the day of his death, and that's Tom Waits. Age only improves him.

I've never understood the fascination with that man. In every song I've heard of his, he sings like he's in the middle of dropping a load.

/a dry, lumpy one at that

mooseyfate: I'd like to slowly press my thumbs into the eyesockets of the people that fight tooth and nail to keep bands like Motley Crue, Poison, and Def Leppard "relevant".

I'm a tried and true hair metal fan. My girlfriend, better part of a decade younger than me, is always asking why I don't have a mullet and a camaro.

But as much as I dig 80's buttrock, sometimes a good memory should stay a memory. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad I can still catch Cinderella or Poison or the Crue live, but the reason Stevie Rae, Buddy Holly, and Jim Morrison are legens is because they didn't live long enough to overstay their welcome.

Give "Rain Dogs" a listen. I've converted many people to the Tom Waits fold by giving them that album to listen to.

The Who does not belong on any list of this nature. I refuse to think otherwise. Even if their new stuff sucks (compaired to their classics), it's still 10X better than most of the deadbeats on that list.

1. Madonna - Always sucked!
2. The Black Crowes - Barely listenable at their best
3. The Who Let's just put Metallica or Deep Purple (much as I love 'em) here.
4. Ray Davies - Another one who doesn't belong
5. Joni Mitchell - Eh, whatever
6. Bryan Adams - This untalented dork can DIAF
7. Rolling Stones - Should have been buried years ago.
8. Elton John - The Bionic Egotist: Another candidate for the DIAFies!
9. Carly Simon - She's so lame...
10. Def Leppard - TDFDLOGOA! TDFDLOGOA! TDFDLOGOA! TDFDLOGOA! TDFDLOGOA! TDFDLOGOA!

Re; joni mitchell

She hasn't made a record you could even call decent since 1978 -- I would argue 1975, but still least 30 years...

Arguing 1976 when Hejira came in out 1976 seems kinda silly.

dameron [TotalFark] 2008-07-22 04:57:26 PM
That should be Arguing 1975.

I have to chime in with Nighthawks at the Diner. It's a live club performance from '75. His voice had yet to turn as gravel-ly as it ultimately became, and his between-song banter shows how powerful he is at turning a phrase.

keylock71: They forgot Pearl Jam...

Pearl Jam needs to be emmersed in a gigantic pit filled with used motor oil and set alite. Then, when all the oil burns off, their remains need to be fed to a dying alligator with a real nasty colon disorder. After the gator shiats them out, the shiat should be compressed into a hard, dense cube, shot into space, and into a black hole, where it will emerge in an alternate dimension, reconstitute itself back into the band, and, realizing that they have not produced a decent album since TEN, go back in time and shoot themselves, take their own place in the time line, and stop sucking, since they didn't suck to start with.

Then, they should go to Europe.

jerry2a 2008-07-22 05:41:23 PM
Springsteen and REM. And can we get rid of the albums they've already made as well?
