If you're going to see Liars for their half-hour pre-Radiohead opening, you're doing it wrong.

I farking hate seeing good bands as undercards at large concerts. I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists been opening for Pearl Jam, they get 30 minutes, the sound quality for opening acts at large concerts is always shiatty and too loud (to weaken your ears before the main act comes on), and they're typically lacking in energy because the place is 80% empty and nobody is interested. Then everyone I'm with says "wtf, you told me this Ted Leo guy was good."

Liars sound wack as hell live, Like bad industrial NIN stuff. I'd recommend Drums Not Dead as a good introduction to them and also not seeing them in a venue fit for Radiohead.

I don't think USA Today is the place to go to find out about bands I should be listening to.

Lyres > Liars

Maybe if there was a pie chart you would have gotten a better understanding of who you should be listening too

I'm seeing Radiohead in August, and I'm pretty sure Liars aren't on the bill

I saw Brett Dennen at a folk fest last year. If you like acoustic singer/songwriters like Josh Ritter or Ron Sexsmith, you'll love him.

It's nice to see talented indy acts slowly build a decent fanbase in a Clear Channel world.

3 bands ill never listen too because i dont like the headlining acts.

/goes off to find obscure hardcore bands from the Garden State

Pentaxian 2008-07-22 11:00:57 AM
I saw Sharon Little open up for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. She was decent but didn't really grab me. It was one "Maybe I'll check out her album, what was her name again?" performances. Which is sometimes just what you want from an opening act.

I've seen opening acts just geting ripped by audiences. Jason & The Scorchers and Bob Dylan fans don't mix.

Best opening act I ever saw was Los Lobos opening for Robert Cray. This was back in the Kiko days.

the only problem with your logic is that Ted Leo and the Pharmacists suck.

As for opening acts, I've rarely seen a good one. Some bands seem to have a history of picking crappy acts in order to keep the spotlight on them. The Van Halen reunion tour was a prime example of this. Not only were the opening acts unknown and pretty much useless, they weren't even the same style of music.

I hate to bring up Rush, but they seem to have come up with the best idea, which is ditching the opening act altogether and playing two sets. Bands with lots of albums and established fan bases really should give people what they want.

I got hooked on Ludo seeing them open for the Presidents of the United States of America. They played a GREAT set at the trocadero in Philly. then i saw them open for the spill canvas and they played 5 songs. Lame, hope they get their own tour soon.

To piggy back Pentaxian comments:

Opening acts should probably not be there to get ripped apart by the main act audience. The worst I witnessed was Living Colour opening for the Stones during the Steel Wheels tour. The Cotton Bowl was an ugly place during the first 45 minutes.

tricycleracer 2008-07-22 02:58:19 PM
Kings of Leon opening for Pearl Jam.

You might as well leave when Pearl Jam hits the stage.

Colbie Caillat

her voice is sexy as hell, but that song of hers that goes

it starts in my toes, goes through my elbows, and it ends at my nose / top of my head down to my legs, ohh, that's what you do to me. It starts at my toes, ends at my nose....

sounds like a farking hell Sesame Street song. What's her next big hit? The wheels on the bus go round and round?

If I knew Liars were opening for Radiohead, I'd find out what time the doors open and arrive a couple of hours later.

I absolutely adore Liars. great stuff and a helluva live show. too bad they're the undercard though. they could easily headline a show themselves.

i'm so indie i leave after the opening bands

/only half kidding

deevo 2008-07-22 05:50:13 PM
oh yeah, dumbest pick for undercards I've ever seen: Twiztid for the Wu-Tang Clan, were awful and this is New York and it was all hip-hop nerds and black dudes, so Twiztid was thusly booed off after 3 songs... or Peeping Tom (Mike Patton) for The Who. Any of the old fogeys or classic rock pinheads who were actually there on time were like WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY EARS.

Best ever was The National. "Mr. November" was worth the $60. Modest Mouse was absolutely shiat, and R.E.M. was meh.

Lamest legit opening act I've ever seen was The Rapture. I mean I've seen some bad ones that nobody has ever heard of and you wonder how they became friends with the headline band, but The Rapture was awful.

I saw Liars play a few months ago and I did not enjoy the experience at all, I even left early. I like their studio work but live it was just too much- I like well-structured noise but Liars were just kind of sloppy and it made my head hurt. Not to mention the lead singer was wearing a light pink suit and looked like he hadn't showered in a few weeks. Not in a hip way, in a homeless way. He seemed like a very odd fellow.

Cernunnos 2008-07-22 08:21:21 PM
Liars sucked balls when I saw them open for Radiohead. If you want good, check out Les Savy Fav. Good, Pixies-influenced rock.

Those music clips were cool. I would listen to all three of those artists, but I will probably forget who they are in the next 3...2...1...

I would place Ted Leo in a Top 5 list of modern songwriters.

And they very often have headlined. I saw them with No Age (who are awful) opening for them.

i just saw how much i'm going to have to pay in a couple months to go see the cold war kids again

far cry from when i saw them open up for sound team 2 years ago for like 6 bucks...

/and its on a tuesday night...

THIS

/people who blow off opening bands aren't very into music
//I guess you gotta get a beer sometime
//actually, people who leave for the headliner annoy me, too
/into music

I saw Cracker open for Dave Matthews in the late '90s and I didn't know it was them until they closed their set with "low". One of the worst live bands I've ever seen. The Offspring are horrible, too.

Baumer: The Offspring are horrible, too.

THIS.

I saw them in 200 at a festival at Atlanta Motor Speedway and they were the #2 worst live act I've ever seen behind Anti-Flag.

I had no idea they were kicking it that old school....

/I found their live show a pleasant surprise compared to their recent albums
