I thought that was awesome. Until she stood up to take her bow and I saw her T-shirt.

Then it became SUPER AWESOME.

Whamdangler: I always wondered how a three-piece played a four-piece song.

I dunno - I've seen it played live probably a dozen or so times over the years and never seen more than 3 parts:
- guitar
- bass
- drums

Which is the 4th?

/that girl did awesome though - she probably can play guitar hero blindfolded

Other than her repeating a section twice, that was awesome.

Whoever makes that keyboard should hire her to do ads cause she just made me want to buy one.

If you ever have the chance to the the PAUL GREEN SCHOOL OF ROCK ALL STARS, do it !!!

Seen them a few times & you cannot believe how great they are .. esp when it's a ZAPPA themed show !!!

Ah it was Kansas Wayward Son, not CCR :)

Ahh I stand corrected - he uses a foot pedal during live shows for the keyboard part.

From Link (new window)

".....The synthesizer melody played over this arrangement is an example of the Locrian mode. In live performances, the synthesizer part is played by bassist/keyboardist Geddy Lee -- using a foot-pedal MIDI controller (Korg MPK-130 & Roland PK-5)[1] -- while he plays the bass part....."

A couple weeks ago I thought it would be nice to have a Hammond B-3. Then I priced them. Anybody know what she's playing? (Carry On was better than YYZIMHO.)

I admit being able to reproduce any composition by ones self is impressive. But whenever I see reproductions like these by young individuals, I only see and hear robotic reproductions. I don't get the real heart and soul that most songs have.

Realistically, anyone could program a single robot to perform those same functions and play that tune without missing a beat. And in the same way the soul is lost.

Just look at her movements as she plays. It's not even choreographed to the music. It's just plain mechanical movement to hit the right notes at the right time no matter what.

Impressive, yes. Satisfying, no.

Keyboard. Geddy Lee plays it between and even during the bass parts (frets the notes, using the other hand for chords on the keyboard).

Fail. She rocked the ending in a very signature way.

And, risking many flames here, as much as I love Rush they are hardly a 'vibrant' or 'heart and soul' kind of band. In fact, they are very robotic, cerebral, and technical. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

QFT. Didn't come here to be a hater, but I think this same thought every time I see one of these prodigies perform. I love Rush, and I love this song -- but this is just another soulless performance by some virtuoso kid who treats a musical performance like a spelling bee. Sure, she knows her stuff, and sure, she studied every note with near-savant levels of obsession -- and God, was it boring.

Same goes for that kid who taps out Super Mario Bros. on his 12-string bass. 100% accurate, 100% boring.

/Yeah, yeah, get off my lawn

This is the worst song Geddy Lee ever wrote.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-07-21 10:39:55 PM
So... I'm confused...
at first i thought she was doing the drum part with her feet [i've seen foot activated electronic drum/pedals things before... like when a solo acoustic guitar/vocal person wants to play 'live' drums, albeit electronic ones]
but then i realized a bit into the song, she was doing the bass part with her feet, ala bass pedals, because her feet and hands did nothing when the [pre-recorded] drums did a solo fill.

the silence between the end of the song and the applause was a little odd....
and the lack of enthusiastic applause was even more odd.
[or maybe there just wasn't too many people in the audience].

anyway
i was blown away. absolutely awesome.

/ young talented [plus mega-practicing] asian musicians FTW!

YYZ is also a zipper brand and not being familiar with this song that's what I thought it was going to be before clicking the link.
There was a video several months ago of this girl performing a piece from Kansas.

I call B.S. The "lack of soul" argument is something music snobs trot out when they can't find anything else to criticize about an otherwise awesome performance by a youngster.

So, what exactly would she need to have done to insert the proper level of "soul" in her musical performance to satisfy the elite, discerning listener?

I don't get this mentality. It rocked. Not perfect, but she clearly has more talent in her pinky than I have in my entire body.

now we gotta find one who likes Primus.

DblDad, Arami76: Can neither one of you recognize the ability to reproduce something and the ability to make it your own are two entirely separate skills, neither one necessarily requiring the other, and each worthy of recognition independent of the other?

She rocked the house down. Very nice. I liked the editorial decisions she made to shift some of the inflections. Really brought out her take on the piece. Soul, if you will.

<jealous rant stemming from comparative musical ineptitude>
HOW?!

So (for the most part) she's playing the guitar leads with her right hand, bass with her left, and some of the drums with her feet? Or is she doing some of the drums with her left foot and keyboard sections with her right? I'm just absolutely flabbergasted by the logistics of it.

/who the fark decided to combine two pianos with drums?! we don't have six hands!

I have an Oberheim OB-3; pretty nice and tweakable. Or you could go synth with Roland 5080 and their ROM versions; which I also have. Roland has lots of "this song" presets. Oberheim OB3/MC-3000 (yes, I also have) has actual drawbars.

XSLUMLORDX 2008-07-22 12:58:23 AM
Am I the only person on Fark who hates that song?
It's like a dot matrix printer making love to a garbage truck- you don't know what's going on, it sounds terrible and there's a foul odor but someone seems to be enjoying it.
