John Lydon is so lost in his own persona that he's becoming more and more of a joke.

The ironic thing here is that he was at his most interesting musically when he truly did drop the "Johnny Rotten" act most completely: early PiL.

He and Elvis are what happens when you give white trash money and convince them that anything they have to say matters.

Hey, hey. My, my. Johnny R ain't a nice guy.

Who gives a fark. The article seems to suggest that everyone involved was menstrating...

Glitchwerks 2008-07-21 12:35:32 PM
Somehow I don't think this story is accurate. And I like Bloc Party a lot. I just think there's more to it than this, "I just asked a question and his friends became racist thugs."

Or maybe not. John's an ass. Everyone knows this by now.

brantgoose 2008-07-21 12:38:47 PM
Johnney Rotten is still alive? That's so uncool, man.

By the way, what's with the picture next to the article of Martin Short hissing? He looks terrible. I mean, even if the lounge singer he is parodying would be older than Mick Jaeger if alive today, it's a nasty make-up job.

It's like a photoshopped picture of Hillary Clinton smiling.

Johnny Rotten is grasping to what remains of his fleeting moment of fame. The Sex Pistols suck. If only Sid Vicious took out that shiatbag before imploding...

Sex Pistols = Ramones groupies

trunkwontopen 2008-07-21 12:43:19 PM
I remember seeing him on an episode of Judge Judy.

Dude deserved to get punched for suggesting that PIL should get back together. I used to like their stuff but JR is an embarassment.

dajek 2008-07-21 12:50:26 PM
Talking about the alleged assault, Kele said: "It's not an issue of the physical assault, even though it was an unprovoked attack, it is the fact that race was brought into the matter so readily.

So if they had just kicked the shiat out of him, he would've been OK with it?

Manfred J. Hattan 2008-07-21 12:52:36 PM
jake_lex: John Lydon is so lost in his own persona that he's becoming more and more of a joke.

He's always been a joke; it's just that there was a time when the joke worked on several levels.

Agree 100% on PiL. The Sex Pistols were more important historically, but that was McLaren's doing and had as much or more to do with the times and the context as the actual music they produced. PiL was better musically.

Seriously. These guys are musicians. What do we expect?

I'm thinking this is because his stepdaughter turns the volume up when Bloc Party comes on the radio when they're riding in the minivan, is why this happened.

Jamdug! 2008-07-21 01:35:39 PM
I take it he's not reforming PiL then?

jgi 2008-07-21 01:41:37 PM

Read his book "Rotten" too.

"The ironic thing here is that he was at his most interesting musically when he truly did drop the "Johnny Rotten" act most completely: early PiL."

I agree on that. Now let's see what happens if the Sex Pistol's record a new album.

/not hopeful

The Fett 2008-07-21 02:15:41 PM
The Sex Pistols contribution and importance to music is not in what they did, but who they inspired.

BuckyFellini 2008-07-21 02:21:50 PM
The article is a little misleading. Nowhere does it say that Johnny Rotten made any racist remarks, only that some of his entourage did:

"...while his associates responded with a "racist tirade" which included the comment "your problem is your black attitude".

"...Lydon should know better than to bring race into the equation, or socialise with and encourage those who hold such narrow-minded attitudes."

Whatever. I'm always surprised when people act like its unusual for someone like Johnny Rotten to be a knob anyway. I mean, does he not go by the name Johnny ROTTEN??

kungfu jesus with a side of lime 2008-07-21 02:35:53 PM
I care so little it isn't even worth trolling these waters.

artman 2008-07-21 02:54:21 PM
BuckyFellini: "I mean, does he not go by the name Johnny ROTTEN??"

I thought this was already discussed here. He doesn't go with the stage name "Rotten" anymore, hasn't since 1980.

If you want to know WHY he became "Rotten" read his book "Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs"

"I think too many people tell me what I think and not enough ask me..." - John Lydon

BuckyFellini 2008-07-21 03:30:56 PM
Thanks, artman, I'm already aware - I'm not talking about "stage names". The point I was trying to make is that his whole persona, the one he's carried through from the late 70s, has more or less not changed. He is who he is. When people act surprised that he can be an asshole to the media and certain pop icons - I think they forget that sometimes, like he is supposed to be polite and civil now that he's middle-aged. And that would be disappointing to me.

Gravyguts 2008-07-21 03:45:36 PM
Pistols are so over-rated i have to stand back in awe at the mountain of dumbasses that praise them as gods. they put out ONE album (granted thats punk rock 101), and they were a punk "boy band" they didnt even write their own music for christs sake (from what ive heard). so please let these mongoloids rot in a pit of obscurity until they die of old age ( which is not punk rock).

jvcturntable 2008-07-21 04:07:35 PM
It's easy enough to dump on Johnny and the Pistols. They made themselves jokes long ago.

That said, something is kinda off with this article. Everything I've heard about the Bloc Party singer is that he's an oversensitive whiny prick.

"your problem is your black attitude".

Is it me, or is it more likely the statement was "your problem is your BAD attitude" and Mr. Bloc Party misheard.
I've met a lot of racists and I've never heard one use such a lame excuse for a racial slur. Maybe it's an English thing.

Why isn't there a "no shiat" tag

fenrael23 2008-07-21 04:19:29 PM
GG Allin shat bigger things than Johnny Rotten....and then ate them. Or flung them into the audience.

But seriously, Sex Pistols were never relevant. They threw together a garage band of dipshiats after watching a Ramones gig. One album and it's not even that good.

dholway [TotalFark] 2008-07-21 04:23:33 PM
Gravyguts: they didnt even write their own music for christs sake (from what ive heard).

That's what you heard, huh? Who did you hear wrote "Holidays in the Sun"?

True. He was also 1000x the attention whore Rotten is. Why do people love GG Allin so much? Ooh, wow, he plays in his own poop and runs around naked, he so crazy! Too bad he was a sh*t musician.

Sex Pistols = Ramones groupies

Sorry, they were playing their songs and recording demos before they ever heard the Ramones. They were actually Stooges and Dolls groupies.

You heard wrong things from stupid people.

They actually did write all their own songs, except for the few covers of course. Glen Matlock was the primary songwriter, and when they made the huge mistake of kicking him out of the band the great songs stopped and they were left with recording "belsen was a gas" five different ways. "Swindle" and "EMI" are great songs that came post Matlock, but there is little else.

(were a band before the first Ramones LP came out, and were gigging long before the Ramones 8/4/76 London debut).

What about "Holidays in the Sun" and "Bodies"?

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-07-21 05:30:34 PM
Holidays yes, not sure when Bodies got written -- and despite it's coolness and punk prototype-ness I never thought it was up to the level of Anarchy and the other singles. But you are right about Holidays, as soon as I clicked submit I thought I should have included it.

Sorry, I don't have a high enough profile to have my own "summon" card!

Actually, and I am embarrassed to admit this, I am on vacation, and had to wait until we got back from the beach.

Yes, I know, that makes me a loser. But at least I didn't fark from the beach on my phone.

Thought about it though....
