FTFA: Moncrief-Craig said that patient confidentiality prevents her from discussing his condition in depth but did say he shows signs of dementia.

Damn, maybe I'm especially thinned skinned today, but it seems like the director of the mental hospital violated the HIPPA confidentiality laws more than once... Patient confidentiality means the patient's information is never to be discussed with anyone other than those who provide care for them. No exceptions unless the patient agrees in writing first. Seeing as how the man has been legally mentally ill for decades, his signature wouldn't be legal in the first place.

*Frank Calloway
*112 years old
*lived in mental health centers since 1952
*diagnosed with schizophrenia
*Alice M. Kidd Nursing Facility, a state home where Calloway now lives
*born on July 2, 1896
*He lives in the geriatric division... Bryce Hospital campus in Tuscaloosa
*no known family left
*no record of his ever being married
*has a full head of closely cropped white hair
*gets around on his own and goes on excursions
*he rocks gently back and forth
*Calloway seems to live in a long-gone era
*he needed a guardian... Zondra Taylor Hutto has filled that role
*attorney is the Tuscaloosa County guardian, conservator and administrator for several residents, including Calloway
*Calloway used to give away some of his creations or sell them for $50, but Moncrief-Craig and Hutto have stopped dealing the work since an appraiser said they could be worth thousands
*has few expenses that aren't covered by Medicaid
*profits will go into a special needs trust in his name so he won't lose his benefits
*Medicaid... provided his care all these years

This poor old soul wasn't interviewed to freely gave away his personal and medical information yet the director did while at the same time saying she couldn't "violate his confidentiality". The only thing she seemed to leave out was his blood type and circumcision status.

It would make my day if a Senior Protective Services group would adopt him if only to sue the H E double hockey sticks out of the big mouth director and the wonderful state of Alabama's mental health department.

Why is it every time someone is old and crazy a picture of Henry Darger (an admittedly creepy crazy old man who was really dedicated) is used?

Come on can't we use someone besides the poster child of crazed old people artists?

Louis Wain. He is famous for drawing cats. His schizophrenia got worse and worse and you can see it in his drawings. His earlier cats are very realistic and personified and they get progressively more trippy until they start to not even look like cats at all. Google him. He is real interesting.

Many people know nothing of outsider art so the most known and studied example is usually the best introduction. It looks more like "art" than overtly christian or abstract work. And somebody invoked the LSD cat, so I'm at worst the 2nd most cliche reference here.

Here's a link to the artist at work. He draws round things by tracing around the bottom of a ceramic pot, and he draws the straight lines by tracing the edges of a composition notebook.

I think his work is very nice, and I'm glad it keeps him busy, but I'm not really sure that the praise being heaped on him is all that justified ("dazzled by his sense of color," "window into another time"). I think if he were a sane man with a normal I.Q. who'd never been institutionalized, and was only in his 40's and was a truck driver doing this stuff in his spare time, we'd say, "Huh. That's a cute mural, there, Frank. You gonna hang it out in the garage, or something?"

But the fact that he's a VERY old guy, is either retarded, demented, or mentally ill (or all three at once), has suffered the privation of long-term institutionalization, is a member of an ethnic minority in a state that traditionally has been vicious to minorities, and you've created the perfect environment for museum curators interested in folk art to make him a legend.

I don't like folk art ANYWAY, so maybe I'm prejudiced, but I don't see works of towering artistic genius here. I see cute paintings done by an enthusiastic hobbyist.

My brother was mentally retarded, and I worked closely with him and met many mentally challenged people over the years. There's a huge tendency to over-praise any smidgen of talent they show, and I think it's most often done by the people who are most uncomfortable being around retarded people.

Us "normal" people get our worth defined by what we accomplish, instead of who we are. I think the people who over-praise the accomplishments of retarded people have a subconscious view that retarded people are worthless, so they jump on a display of talent to prove to themselves that the retarded person is worthy to be kept around.

Well, my brother didn't accomplish a damned thing in 51 years, but he was still a cool dude to chill with, and so were his posse from the group home, so it never mattered to me that he didn't display some savant talent.

However, if the art world wants to go nuts over Mr. Calloway and sell his paintings for thousands of dollars, I hope the old guy enjoys all the money and buys himself something nice. My brother would have gotten a baseball cap and an ice cream cone, and then he would have taken the cap off about 1,000 times, pointed to the logo, and reminded you of the team name with screams of joy.

I'm not disagreeing. That's obviously the way pricing works. But if I paid you 100 dollars for your latest bowel movement I'd be retarded. My 'market' paying you the money doesn't make it less stupid. At least in text messages' case most people are too stupid to know how much it costs. A 112 year old is the equivalent, artistically, of an elephant or a chimp. I guess artistically that would make him underpaid. He needs a better agent.

to Fishstick Kitty: his work has been displayed several times in different venues since 2000. Somewhere along the line he probably gave an interview or provided information for a bio. Or he may have family that has power of attorney and they could divulge whatever information they want without violating privacy.

new topic... 112-year-old people generally get a write-up on their birthday. Not many of them make drawings that get exhibited in a reputable museum. There is a certain curiosity for 21st-century art created by someone born in the 19th century. The fact that he didn't really start his "professional" career until he was over 80 years old is somewhat interesting. That he has spent the last 56 years in mental hospitals makes his background much more noteworthy.

Anything that gets exhibited to a pretty large audience like this will no doubt jump in price big time, regardless of artistic worth. These are unique items and the background of their creation guarantees value. Yes, the doodle by your local barrista may be much more beautiful, relevant, engaging, etc. But rare art is $$$

castufari 2008-07-21 04:55:46 AM
They're probably pimping him out to make some of the money back he's "cost" them. Sorry but at 112 you shouldn't have to worry about making up the gap for insurance, let Uncle Freaking Sam pay for it. Hell, we can spend billions on "wars" but we can't take care of our own. Nice.

That's what I was wondering too. Some of his behaviors seem consistent with autism (fixation on numbers, repetitive behaviors, rocking back and forth). High-functioning autism is often mistaken for other conditions, and this certainly would have been the case in 1952.
