Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 08:15:57 PM
That seems... counterproductive.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 08:16:39 PM
wow.
How much of an idiot do you have to be to struggle with the police after they've just saved your goddamn LIFE?!?!?!?

And for the anti-cop crowd, if the details in tfa are true, then the idiot went for a cops gun, making this shooting justifiable.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 08:22:11 PM
SilentStrider: the idiot went for a cops gun, making this shooting justifiable.

And now, Goofus and Gallant in: Rescue at Sea.

Gallant politely thanks those law enforcement individuals who saved him from drowning.

Goofus... well, didn't.

this needs to be photoshopped.

charlatan brown 2008-07-20 10:10:03 PM
did they kill him dead?

stebain 2008-07-20 10:13:13 PM
Police promised to do much better next time and quickly sent themselves to their rooms.

mikemil828 2008-07-20 10:34:54 PM
The police shoulda saved the bullets and kicked back into the water and let Darwin sort him out.

I still read Highlights at the dentist's.

Skip straight to Goofus.

The green lights seem to have a watery theme today. Two drowning and a Steve Irwin reference... lazy sunday.

jafiwam 2008-07-20 10:36:02 PM
Suicide by Cop as a backup plan for plain ol suicide.

/Here's a hint, save the LEO the pain.
//Swim out there with your .38, back o the head, in the brain stem.
///If the bullet don't get you, the water will. And relatively little mess.

Plant a knife on him.

Somehow I have a feeling alcohol was involved.

strathmeyer 2008-07-20 10:38:36 PM
Sounds like somebody interrupted a suicide.

HoratioGates 2008-07-20 10:40:14 PM
If this actually happened this way this may be the most justifiable police response ever reported on Fark. Seriously, when was the last time you heard about a cop getting Tasered in the face and attacked for his gun and his comrades in arms fire just one bullet. That's some restraint.

Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind if the facts in the case change. For instance, if it turns out this guy was a merman and they were drowning him by taking him out of the water, then maybe they had it coming.

Hit a cop with his own taser?
That's a shooting!

Fascist farking pigs murder another innocent and then cover it up. Anybody who believes the cops version of this is retarded.

austin_millbarge 2008-07-20 10:46:38 PM
The guy got the officers Taser.

Taser.

That's a shootin'. Good thing the guy didn't have a sharpened popsicle stick or something. They might have had to sink the entire boat.

Yay!

So what's your version? They pulled him out of the water, gave him a ten second head start for lulz and started firing?

p4ul13 2008-07-20 10:49:44 PM
Next time they should just skip the rescue and shoot him in the water.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 10:49:56 PM
austin_millbarge: That's a shootin'. Good thing the guy didn't have a sharpened popsicle stick or something. They might have had to sink the entire boat.

from tfa: "When Hirschfield then tried to grab one of the officer's guns, Fouser said, the other officer shot him."

Extra attention has been given tot he important part.

Uh, you taser me in the face and I have a gun, after politely asking you to stop I think I'd shoot too.

It seems pretty amazing that he'd have the energy to put up a fight with police if he was out there treading water for any length of time.

Fark cop-haters have to cherry-pick parts to allow their cop-hate. It's standard procedure.

FTFA: Fouser said Hirschfield knocked one officer to the deck and then used the Taser to strike him in the face. When Hirschfield then tried to grab one of the officer's guns, Fouser said, the other officer shot him.

Grabbing a cops gun...yes that's a shootin'. This guy happily signed his life away. Pure drunken stupidity.

"You're trying to help some guy out the water and he's fighting," Fouser said. "He became very combative with the officers, and somewhere in the course of the fight, he was able to get one of the officer's Tasers away from him."

Fouser said Hirschfield knocked one officer to the deck and then used the Taser to strike him in the face. When Hirschfield then tried to grab one of the officer's guns, Fouser said, the other officer shot him.

A cop used a lethal weapon on a guy who managed to wrestle a non-lethal weapon from another cop? Replace "Taser" with "baton" and see if that makes sense.

What happened to the other cop's Taser? Get stuck in his holster? And before folks jump on the conductivity bandwagon, which would've been better - use the Taser on both of them, or kill one of them?

This is what happens when cops increasingly rely on equalizers rather than training. I could be wrong, but I'll bet neither was well-trained on restraint techniques. The other cop had no idea what to do about this guy pounding his partner (with his own Taser, no less), so he just shot him.

Can't blame the cops here - this guy was violent and obviously determined to do some harm. But, I get the feeling this could've ended better.

Loomy 2008-07-20 11:22:56 PM
Oh thank goodness, MIGuy! You seemed so normal, I knew it couldn't be true!
