I was on a flight once that had a single engine landing. No big deal except for the military plane that flew next to us checking to see if the engine had exploded and all the fire trucks by the runway when we landed. Meh.

That's not a NW employee. All theirs are over 60 years old. They don't push those carts down the aisle to serve you. They need them to hold themselves up.

Wavebro 2008-07-20 07:50:42 PM
I was once on a NW flight. When the plane landed, it fishtailed scared everyone on the plane. When we finally got to a stop, the attendant came over the PA, and said "Here at Northwest, if our coffee dosent wake you up, our landings sure will!" I will now, only fly Northwest..

thesubliminalman 2008-07-20 07:50:42 PM
seminole87: There was a no engine landing on a transatlantic flight once, pilot glided it in for the last 80 miles, now that takes some balls!

No, I don't think the pilot had any choice in the matter, he was trying to save his ball. Also you could coast your car 80 miles if you were at that kinda altitude.

"The Dayton Air Show at the airport was halted while the plane landed but resumed less than an hour later."

And nobody noticed.

Apparently you've never flown into Dayton International. There are two places (technically, if you don't count the Max & Ermas or Chillis or whatever the restaurant in the middle section is) and neither one of them ever seem to be open when I fly through there. In Dayton you choices are limited to Sbarro and a bottle of coke from the MSNBC shop.

This wasn't an emergency, this was as far as the airline was taking people due to high fuel costs.

aerojockey [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 07:57:14 PM
Notice that they shut down the engine as a precautionary measure. It is generally considered safer to fly with a single engine than with one engine disabled but working: a single engine is strong enough power the plane on its own.

I'm pretty sure that the engines on that airplane have a separate backup control system in case the computer fails (more recent engines usually don't) but it was still probably safer to shut it down.

Whatever happened to that aircraft? Was the wing restored? And was the plane trucked out or flown out?

Those of you that ever have a chance to go to Dayton, Ohio, should make plans for a full day at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB. (Pops) I've been a few times on business trips, usually with only a couple of hours max. Free (Donations accepted) museum, free parking, and lots of interesting air frames.

The wing was knicked on a lane marker, the engine tossed a rod or something (got repaired and a new/used rebuilt engine was installed) didn't touch the truck/camper thingie and he flew at an airshow in Champaign Il. last friday night.

simpsonfan 2008-07-20 08:25:46 PM
I once saw a C-119 come in on one engine. The 'Flying Boxcar' has piston engines, so you can tell if an engine isn't running.

TheCheez 2008-07-20 08:26:51 PM
Went to the museum at Wright Pat AFB in April when I was travelling for business. Amazing setup they've got there. They have nearly one of everything the USAF and it's predecessors has used since flight was discovered. Truely amazing to be around such artifacts.

Also single engine handling and approaches is no worries. EVERYBODY PANIC and such.

They do on a plane that predominately uses thrust-reversers on a widely spaced pair of exceptionally powerful engines that has to come in low and hard then rely mostly on emergency braking power to come to a halt.

You fark it up and you lose your landing gear, spin up like what happened in Sioux City and REALLY put on a show.

thesubliminalman 2008-07-20 08:28:23 PM
RoyBatty:

Reading better now, the engine was brought to Xenia by truck (9 cylinder rotary won't fit in MY car) where the plane is based and a loaner wing was used to fly the plane back for a lil more work.

It really wasn't a big deal. They scrambled the emergency response folks, but the show went on. I was loading and unloading Huey passengers on the other side of the field. We didn't even take a break.

Now they aren't but if at the same time your hydraulics decides to go out, or some other random problem you have a chain of events that will lead to an accident.

Aircraft crashes rarely are caused by any single problem, they are often a chain of events that lead to the loss of the aircraft.

Kiradikash 2008-07-20 11:13:13 PM
I live in Dayton...and the sad thing is, I did not even hear about this until I found it on Fark. Lol.

I have been to the WPAF Museum. I loved it. Took my father there while he was visiting. He was in the Air Force a long time ago, and he enjoyed it a lot. He even saw some of the air planes (same type, not the same actual planes) that he had worked on when stationed over seas.

There is plenty of stuff to do in Dayton if you know where to go. I can always find things to do.

The ConfederateCommemorative Air Force has their Fall AirSho at Midland airport, they have to 'pause' the show evey so often for airline traffic. I wonder what it's like for passengers to see old warbirds flying around in the distance while they're landing?

Dayton is a scary place. The Wright Brothers invented aviation in a desperate attempt to get out of Dayton (I know they did it in NC, but damn it they were Daytonians).

That being said, I am glad that it was able to land instead of crashing, or something horrible like that, I still have friends there. Glad it all worked out.

lol

1) Aircraft loses altitude.
2) Aircraft encounters ground.
3) Oops!
