It's only better because of the gap. You know what they say about absinthe making the heart grow--

...Okay, overdone... I'll stop.

This actually has wormwood in it? I'm thinking no, especially because they stress companies that claim levels are inferior.

Why the fark does everything I used to do as a anti-social bastard back in the 1980's become a farking fad in the early 2000? WTF, is RPG's and making home made firecrackers going to become the next big thing too?

I somehow doubt it

I'm against banning it but I'm also against drinking bitter, green, licorice booze.

"A 1 -liter bottle, the only size available, costs $59.95...Because most absinthes are 45 to 72 percent alcohol (Kubler is 53 percent), water usually is added before drinking."

Yep the college kids are going to buy it.

Be careful, or an upcoming resurgence of Bowl Cuts might be laid squarely upon your shoulders.

Daedalus27 2008-07-20 04:04:38 PM
Good, there was little reason for a ban in the first place. On a side note, what is with all the Virginian-Pilot stories? Does a mod work for them or something?

For the record, it doesn't make you hallucinate or anything like that. It just makes you act like twice the ass on half the booze.

/nearly got arrested in Madrid because of the evil stuff

I would say it tastes more like alcohol and mouthwash flavored licorice.

The wormwood toxin is supposedly filtered out in the US version. So you still need your wicked stepsister to bring you a bottle from across the pond.

I've had some really nice Swiss Absinthe, as well as several others and the swiss one was the most balanced. The Japanese one from Suntory (Hermes Absinthe) is also drinkable, but might or might not have had any thujone content. The US brand "Absente" is horrible, with a sickening taste. I'd much rather drink Pernod or Ricard Pastis than Absente.

sorhed 2008-07-20 04:12:02 PM
Seriously, any absinthe made after 1900 is the equivalent of those nasty energy drinks. It's syrupy crap made for a quick buzz.

Tried some reasonably good stuff in Spain years ago. Loved the bitter anise flavour and the great swimming headbuzz. Even better with the Moroccan hash I paid too much for.

geetus 2008-07-20 04:13:09 PM
Just get drunk and eat some mushrooms. It seems to be the experience most expect from it anyway.

Mmmmmm, wormwood toxin....

Bitter Barn 2008-07-20 04:14:16 PM
I had heard of it a long time ago and never thought much about it. A couple of years ago my dumbass brother made a huge deal about getting a bottle, proceeded to entrance us with wondrous stories about the drink and poured himself a dainty little glass. After the big buildup he didn't offer any of us any. I spent the rest of the night trying to convince him he was Jesus Christ and he should try jumping off the roof to prove it.

PennyCentury: A must-have

Adding the water brings out the essential oils. That's all well and good until the oil hits the anise.

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is the main alcohol in many alcoholic beverages; absinthe is one of them.

sitting right next to my monitor.

Stuff's delicious, but not really something you can throw into your usual mix of various beers and liquors.

They've been doing this for years. It's called Bacardi 151.

Saturn5 2008-07-20 04:16:12 PM
If it isn't made with Grand Wormwood, it isn't Absinthe. Period.

There are many anise flavored "herbal liquors" but they aren't Absinthe.

I like it, but I also like Jager. Absinthe has a much more complex flavor - not to mention being 100-150 proof.

If there's no wormwood, how 'bout just including an actual worm, ala tequila?

/ate the worm once

Looks like fake absinthe to me.

Even the "good stuff" is likely "fake." They sell that crap all over the place here in Europe. It is nothing to get excited over.

Thank you, sir, for restating my point. This new stuff is glorified candy. And I've tried it. And a Jager with a beer right after is awesome!

nich0lai: This actually has wormwood in it? I'm thinking no, especially because they stress companies that claim levels are inferior.

Most every absinthe out there right now contains wormwood in its recipe. Thujone levels high enough to cause hallucinations are pretty much impossible to get out of infusing your absinthe with wormwood.

ribbit 2008-07-20 04:31:40 PM
Yes. There is Wormwood in the new Absinthes.

Ted Breaux demonstrated pretty conclusively that traditionally-produced absinthe complete with wormwood does not have enough thujone to get the FDA upset. Fake absinthes like Pernod and Absente didn't have wormwood. Kubler, Lucid, Nouvelle Orleans (Breaux's flagship recipe) and others do. The "melts in your brains, not in your hands" thing is because of abinthe's high alcohol content, typically 160 proof or twice that of normal booze.

Now for that other matter...

The correct quote isn't "Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder."

It's "Absinthe makes the font grow harder."

Sheseala 2008-07-20 04:36:32 PM
Brand guide (new window)

Lucid uses the Grand Wormwood and is sold in the US. Some of the other kinds may be able to be sold here, but they need to be tested.

A friend of mine bought two bottles from overseas. Only one made it through customs. It was more like a high than a drunk. Definitely worth the price, if you can get the real thing.
