(UPI) Interesting Sorry hippies... scientists have discovered that people who eat a lot of soy have more memory loss. Or that might be from weed. One of those two. Anyway dude, you're boned   (foodconsumer.org) divider line 88

However, other factors can't be excluded. In Indonesia, formaldehyde, a highly reactive cancer-causing agent that is sometimes used to preserve foods like tofu, may be partially responsible for the increased risk of memory loss.

The study also found somehow fermented tofu was linked to improved memory.

Ok, just to make sure...

Formaldehyde bad.
Alcohol good.

Gotcha. I was already thinking along those line anyway, but this article confirms it.

No, science is for people who know what hurts you and what doesn't, and can think for themselves.
And if anyone thinks weed is an 'escape from reality', then they're the deluded one. Alcohol is the same thing, if not worse.

I predict that farkers will carefully weigh and evaluate the evidence using credible scientific sources, and we will all come away with a richer understanding of the issue.

Or not.

From the abstract (new window):

Background/Aims: Cell culture studies suggest that phytoestrogens, abundant in soy products such as tempe and tofu, could protect against cognitive decline. Paradoxically, the Honolulu Asia Aging Study reported an increased risk for cognitive impairment and other dementia markers with high tofu (soybean curd) intake. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 2 rural sites (Borobudur and Sumedang) and 1 urban site (Jakarta) among mainly Javanese and Sundanese elderly (n = 719, 52-98 years of age). Memory was measured using a word learning test sensitive to dementia and soy consumption was assessed using Food Frequency Questionnaire items. Results: High tofu consumption was associated with worse memory ... while high tempe consumption (a fermented whole soybean product) was independently related to better memory ... particularly in participants over 68 years of age. Fruit consumption also had an independent positive association. The analyses were controlled for age, sex, education, site and intake of other foods. Conclusion: The results for tofu consumption as a risk factor for low memory function may tie in with the Honolulu Asia Aging Study data. It is unclear whether these negative associations could be attributed to potential toxins or to its phytoestrogen levels. Estrogen (through which receptors phytoestrogens can exert effects) was found to increase dementia risk in women over 65 years of age. Tempe contains high levels of phytoestrogens, but (due to fermentation) also exhibits high folate levels which may exert protective effects. Future studies should validate these findings and investigate potential mechanisms.

So if you are anti-soy, use the increased dementia wording and hit your opponents over the head with it. If you are pro-soy, use the statement about improved memory from tempe consumption, and hit your opponents over the head with it. Repeat as needed.

"Scientist" is a pretty broad term. And it seems to stand in many people's minds as "guy who knows everything and never shows bad judgement." My brother was a 4.0 student who was always way ahead of his class. All it did for him was lead him into ridiculous arrogance, so that he automatically assumed that every weird thing that flitted through his mind must be correct because he thought of it. Smart people make the same dumb decisions everyone else does, they just think their ideas are always born out of intelligence.

As for soy: I thought the proving ground for soy was the culture of Japan. Didn't read the article. Are Japanese folks suffering memory loss?

Now imagine that vomit flavor only much stronger, and thats natto. I had this in a sushi restaurant once. My friend saw my face and knew he didn't want any. Then I called him a coward, and he ate it, the fool.

It wouldn't be so bad if the flavor didn't last for 10 minutes. And the smell, oh god.

hmmm. ok, I'll narrow my definitions:
scientist: one who does novel research for a career.
doctor: one who uses medicine to cure ailments in people.

So, the people I work with are scientists, and doctors, and I guess we just have the self-control to not overdo it, because we all seem to be doing pretty ok.

your brother is one example, and it sounds like he was ayoung man full of piss-and-vinegar. His arrogance and bad decisions are par for the course at that age.

Someone posted an article about this on the fridge of my co-op two years ago (along with other health issues from eating way too much freakin' soy). After someone went through and wrote out hysterical rebuttals on the margin of the sheet, it got thrown in the recycle bin, then got disappeared after we threw it back up.

Look, people: EVERYTHING IS GOOD IN MODERATION. If you want to be a vegan, great. Stop being such a lazy-ass about it and balance your diet properly. All those old folks in Japan with great health and age? They didn't eat just soy - it's only a small percentage of what they eat.

Fish, veggies, rice. Cooked well. There you go.

One of the vigilante vegans in my house was dating the kid who bought our food, and somehow, "problems" kept coming up with the milk/egg/cheese orders. Happily, she slept with his friend, they all left the house, and we could eat decently again.

I've lived with vegans who didn't say a thing about my food habits (since I'm super-vigilant about cleaning, especially with raw meat around). They influenced my habits WAY more than the look-at-me-with-daggers vegans. The quiet ones just did their thing, and taught me how to cook kale and tofu and lentils.

The other ones just led me to buy bacon out of spite.

I'm anemic, and I know I don't have the time/money/energy to eat vegetarian 100% of the time and not see my iron plummet. And even if I wasn't, you're not my effing judge and jury. They could ask, and find out I buy almost everything local, including my grass-fed and free-range meat (I'd rather it be local than organic shipped from God-knows-where)... But it shouldn't matter. However, I'm sure the feeling of moral superiority is nice.

zekebullseye: Association does not equal causation. I hate these kinds of studies. They mean nothing.

come on, you think they just compared the two numbers and said "Look! Tofu = DementiaZOMGONESIES!!!1"

No, they had to have had controls, and sampling restrictions, and power analyses and statistically robust methodology. Just like any other scientific study published in a peer-reviewed journal.

That being said, anytime humans are part of the study, there is a larger than normal chance for reporting error.

Good point.

Besides, vegetarians don't need to eat only soy. I'm a veggie and I actually don't like the stuff - beans and eggs are my protein. But soy problems aside, who cares what somebody does or doesn't eat?

Unless they push it on you. At which point, they deserve the backlash.

Millions of Asians also eat good food that isn't soy based - brown rice, veggies, fish, etc.

How many hippie vegetarians do you know who eat cereal for breakfast with soy milk, tempeh for lunch, tofu patties for dinner, and a Tofuttti snack for dessert? Cause I know plenty, mainly because they're too lazy to soak the lentils the night before and plan ahead.

Uh-huh. Just as I thought.

Especially tofu is a heavy staple source of protein in Indonesia. A country where a heavy presence of Islam (with a tinge of Hinduism) and vegetable based food is common, it's obvious that tofu is more relied in Indonesia than in East Asia.
