I live in Japan and love eel so I'll probably be getting a kick out of these replies.

This news of the eel-shortage theory,
Admittedly makes me feel dreary.
I just can't eat soggy
or briny unagi
So I think I'll skip the nigiri.

Feel I sorry, this headline is ill. Doesn't match the story, needs more appeal.

I like the effort of the submitter's ideal but it doesn't meet my ideal

headline.

Assonance is constantly, and critically, over-criticized. It's because crassness becomes circumspect.

There are a few Mainers making some good money harvesting eel for the Japanese. Not tuna money but still.

I love the headline, love the eel.
I can't whine, it's how I feel.

winces 'cause it's lame.

I think the headline is better than the story.

Sounds like an episode of Rikki Lake to me...

"I used to be fat, but now I'm ALL THAT!"
"You think you're so hot, but I'm here - with my mom and dad and brother, and that other girl in accounting that you used to date but don't talk to anymore and your sister - to tell you you're NOT!"

//props to Subby though - clever enough to make me smile.

Probably the only sentence in human history where Todd Zeile, Seal, and Kim Jong-Il will be linked together...

It's going to be very interesting to watch a billion Chicoms starve once they've finished raping their foodstocks and fields. Everything is for sale now, and they're destroying it all. I love it.

Hopefully soon, they'll have to go back to eating their children.

Hard to feel sorry for them too, as they place no value on non-Chinese life. Most arrogant people on the planet, they truly believe they are the center of the world and that they have just been biding their time, waiting to take their rightful and natural place at the top of the pecking order.

Good luck with that, whores.

Mmmmm...river eel sushi.

I didn't ask but the guy who cooks the sushi* (*Yes, some of it IS cooked.) at the little fast-food Japanese restaurant in the Food Court told me the eel is Canadian, not Chinese. That makes sense and I'm glad to hear it--can you imagine how toxic Chinese eel must be?

The stuff I buy is lightly smoked rather than bar-b-que style. Sometimes it is still warm from the grill.

I can't afford expense account Japanese any more, like I could when I was an impoverished student living on my money, family money, government money, university money, etc., but I still can't resist the fast-food and shopping mall sushi, which comes in around $10 for a nice light meal or snack. The eel is my favourite.

I recommend that you get a Seafood Watch card (you can download one) and buy only sustainable seafood. You should know what kind of tuna you are eating and where your shrimp and salmon come from.

Alaska is good (BC also), Atlantic stocks are fairly well managed.

Asian farmed shrimp is not only worse for the environment, it is worse for you.

www.seafoodwatch.org

I love seafood and am willing to eat some of the more exotic stuff but there's a lot of fish and shellfish I will never eat again now that I know 95% of the stocks that still existed when I was a kid are gone, most likely forever.

Orange roughy--yum, but it is mid-Ocean so it's too slow growing and scarce to be sustainable.

Scallops--some are OK but the size and quality are way down from when I was a lad and a lot of them are fake.

On the bright side there is plenty of jellyfish, squid, crab and sea urchin, all of which have profited from overfishing of their predators. And they are moving north. Blue crab is being fished in Scotland and in New England--it used to come mostly from further South, say, Chesapeake Bay, France and Spain.

Since the cod rain out, they've switched to crab and scallops. When those run out, they'll switch to sea urchins. When those run out, we'll be facing our doom, eating squid.

Mmmmm...calamari.
