The EU didn't ban Peking Duck. They banned the ovens traditionally used to cook it in that do not meet safety standards.

-1 for inaccurate headline.
The are new ovens that do conform to regulation.

Shouldn't it be Beijing duck?

/yea, I know

It is fun how nations like to kill traditional ethnic cooking (even if it's a native ethnicity).

Edziak 2008-07-20 02:29:54 AM
Couldn't they just test the ovens to see if they were dangerous and then certify them after the fact?

Fizics 2008-07-20 02:30:29 AM
Leave Peking Duck alone!

I had that in Beijing, it was delicious in the way only something that takes years off of your expected lifespan can be.

Edziak: Couldn't they just test the ovens to see if they were dangerous and then certify them after the fact?

They must be dangerous. Not a single duck has survived.

damnit, meant to post THIS (new window)instead

Also enjoyable that there are so many standards that must be complied with (unsure if these are new standards and grandfather clauses or ex-post-facto laws don't exist, or if people installed "illegal" instruments after certain laws were passed), yet they'll even admit that these had not injured people.

I understand making sure things like wigwam/beehive burners are no longer legal... these? As long as you make sure your restaurant has ventilation... not so much. But hey, it's the new world, we can't pollute! (except in all of those ways that are legal)

Ducks are notoriously old-fashioned.

'We are not aware of a single injury or accident involving these duck ovens but now we are aware of this issue we want to prevent any accidents happening.'

Nice one nanny state - I bet all those chefs and restaurant customers are so glad you're out there protecting them from evil imported ovens.

/Had Peking Duck a couple of weeks ago
//Still alive - as is the chef.
///DIAF nanny state

aerojockey [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 02:43:36 AM
You know, instead of just shutting them down outright, how about at least giving them a few months or so to replace it. Stupid thing about Europeans is that they're dicks about everything. In US the Health Department comes by, sees a few minor violations, and tells the owner they better have it fixed in a few weeks when they come back.

The Daily Fail. I wonder if any part of the article is true.

Dee Snarl 2008-07-20 02:45:42 AM
Given the rule of law and stuff, I suppose these guys need to suck it up and get new ovens - sorry. But FTR, during a year in China, I ate every bizarre, lukewarm fried critter I could find on the street, and got sick one time. I'm glad we're conscientious about health code stuff in the West, but we kinda don't need to be.

/'course, I'm hardcore
//I think we called it Beijing Duck; only tried it once, at the place in Beijing, with pictures of Nixon, Clinton, Gorbachev et al eating there. Too expensive.
///Now Korean BBQ - that was the shiat. Bucket of coals in the middle of the table with a grill on it, plates of squid and fatty beef surrounding it, and of course a shiatload of beer. My favorite meal in China.

Asura-HiME 2008-07-20 02:46:10 AM
Then only outlaws living in EU eat Peking ducks?

Danger Avoid Death 2008-07-20 02:46:51 AM
FTFA: Council inspectors have been busily visiting restaurants that use the ovens and sealing them closed with tape

That wouldn't be Duck Tape, would it?

TripcodeMel 2008-07-20 02:47:22 AM
SevenYearHawk: It's a beautiful duck. It really is. But you see, it's smiling at me.

Edziak: Couldn't they just test the ovens to see if they were dangerous and then certify them after the fact?

I'm pretty sure as with all such "certification" the manufacturer will need to pay a certain "fee" to the certification body before they can slap on those CE stickers.

In the meantime, the restaurants will have to buy new ovens made in the EU. How conveniently fortunate for EU oven makers.

That reminds me of an idiom but I can't put my finger on it. Something about a nail and a head, and the hitting thereof.

THIS.

The Japanese do the same thing with beef imports, the ban foreign beef for
far-fetched "safety reasons" so their domestic market can continue selling
native-raised beef for extortion prices.

If existing equipment already in use for years had a carbon monoxide problem,
people would already have been made sick. Nor is it hard to tell if they have
such a problem, they sell CO detecters for $20-40 everywhere. If they can't just
grandfather in the equipment their inspectors have been passing already for years
they could require the detecters be installed nearby to satisfy safety concerns.
Instead of that, they'll make them spend $8,000 on new equipment whose major
difference is likely a $0.50 printed sticker - and that they're made in the EU.

It seems they are concerned less about the ovens than the carbon monoxide emissions. While it would seem easy enough to wave a CO tester above the oven and just stamp it "APPROVED", I daresay the real reason is:

there were no European manufacturers making them. The restaurant has now ordered a new £4,000 oven which will not be delivered for another month.

this.

You do realize that if they shut down Chinatown it would not solve your problem because those people would just move somewhere else.

What you need to do is to exterminate all life within the boundaries of Chinatown. Then you can live your life free of the Yellow Menace once and for all.

Archie Goodwin [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 03:47:38 AM
At the rate the EU is going, I predict they will come out with an edict to ban themselves, before too long, as they have banned everything else.
