Had to check and see if it was that asshat in Lockport IL who went to Club Fed for keeping exotic animals captive and selling the meat as wild game. Some things just shouldn't be commercially available.

God Bless the Fires as they wipe california off the map. Fires are essential for a healthy forest ecosystem, million dollar homes and yuppies...eh not as much. But it would be nice for the fires to go out so I could see the mountains again.

Actually, that is how Smokey got his start.
he was a real bear, rescued from a forest fire.

StrongShad [TotalFark] 2008-07-19 10:29:49 PM
Look for the followup in four years after he's been back in the wild for a while, kills some careless camper who got too close for a photo op, and is hunted down and shot.

/cynicism

Very cute story - just saw it on the news here and it looks like he's really bonding with his rescuer.

As a Californian, I agree with you. This is just nature being nature, just like earthquakes and floods and hurricanes and tornadoes. I feel bad for some of the people who lose their homes, as a whole lot of them are not rich yuppies and have lived in the mountains for ages. But as for those million dollar McMansions staring to pop up in the mountains, those can't burn down quick enough.

It sucks not seeing blue sky for a month and my lungs are a bit fatigued, but this inferno is a bit overdue.

I grew up in San Diego and I remember in the early 70's there was a particularly big fire and the schools were closed because it rained ashes for almost a week. There were ash drifts along the sides of the roads and buildings.

Yeah I guess let 'em burn is super popular right now 'cause it does make sense but there are real people who don't live in McMansions and just love the mountains and live there and really don't want their TINY cabin burnt to the ground....

Seeing the columns of firefighters roll into Durango during the Mission Ridge Fire saving my ass was pretty nice....

I know fire is an essential part of forest health... But you wouldn't want your house in the city burned down right?

/Realist

Southern California has burned for centuries. It is how the manzanita (chaparral) exist. Their seeds stay dormant for years underground and when there is a wildfire they pop open to grow. The existing chaparral has to burn in order to make way for the new. The cycle of life for some plant life in SoCal.

Unfortunately people build homes in the hills along side the manzanita and suffer the consequences.

Chaparral is a biome.

Manzanita grows and thrives fine where there havenet been fires in a very long time.

Next to the neighbors....Manzanita

I just watched a guy on TV shoot a bear for fun this morning .. so that kinda balances this one out. He held the bears head up like he was some kinda tough guy for shooting it while it was eating grass.

It was 5 am and some kind of infomercial.

Are we allowed to kill black bears for fun?

IMO...Killing any animal for anything less than food is wrong.

This reminds me of a joke...

Why doesn't Smokey the Bear have any kids?

Because anytime his wife gets hot, he smacks her with a shovel.
