Wasn't able to see the actual show, but this video is nothing short of awesome. Vedder was severely channeling Daltry, and the rest of the guys (espeically McDready and Ament) were up to the challenge as well.

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this but that song is nowhere near the who's best song, and not close to one of pearl jam's best performances.

Great performance. But I still get goosebumps listening to live Yellow Ledbetter.

Could've done without the extra two minutes of Sean Penn on the intro. As for the song, I've never been a big Who fan, but I respect their stature even if they don't personally appeal to me as much as some others. Even so, that performance is pretty admirable. A nice tribute to a very deserving bunch.

Love Quadrophenia because that's the tour I saw them on.

jiaxiaobo 2008-07-20 06:28:42 AM
Both are about as good as a straight cover of a song gets.

TedAlsoRises 2008-07-20 06:38:59 AM
The Foo Fighters covering "Young Man Blues" was the best rock out performance of the night.

PJ had it tough because they got to cover Quadrophenia, and in terms of acceptable VH1 coverable songs (which excludes Dr. Jimmy, and The Dancer), The Real Me, and Love Reign Over me are the most acceptable from an amazing album. I think a PJ cover "Won't Get Fooled Again" would have been better, and I am very disappointed nobody played it.

Thanks for the new link -- that was pretty great. Glad they used a string section on it. A friend was just telling me about this last night.

Viacom + MTV + VH1 = Assholes

Anyway...thanks for the link frostus. I always thought that Vedder's vocals sounded like Daltrey's, always. But Vedder also can bring it down to a whisper. Pearl Jam doesn't get the credit they deserve. Great performance.

Chak 2008-07-20 08:54:40 AM
Jeff Ament nailed that bass line on The Real Me.

something about pearl jam just kinda irritates me..

Sean Penn: "...but we all know The Who DIDN'T sell out...unlike certain music channels."

Makes me want to smack him a little less than I normally do when he opens his mouth. Nice dig, Sean.

Oh, and I didn't watch much of the special, but I really did enjoy the biography that preceded it--was an excellent documentary. I was surprised at how much they were willing to share, including Townshend's recent legal battles.

I saw the whole thing the other night, and I have to say that the Pearl Jam performance was the best of the entire show, save for when the the Who themselves came out. Vedder actually hit the notes required in the vocals, unlike a lot of the other artists, and the rest of the musicians played excellently.

/hated the Flaming Lips performance. What was up with that silver whip/gong hammer Wayne Coyne had?

Dave Grohl's vocals blew chunks at this show (didn't see all of it, just Foo, PJ and Incubus). I heard that he canceled a few shows after it due to an "undisclosed illness". As a huge fan of the Foo, I really do think it might've been better if Dave just stuck to guitar.

And it would've been even BETTER if Dave did a song or two behind the drum kit. Not necessarily with Foo, of course.

vedder's voice sounded awesome. I was pleasantly surprised.

jabrony 2008-07-20 01:21:10 PM
Watching the HDTV version of the show now on MHD. It looks and sound incredible. I thought all the acts did a very nice job on their Who covers. Even Tenacious D picked the right song for the and kept it to just one.

InmanRoshi 2008-07-20 01:43:04 PM
Why do they allow Sean Penn at these events when you know he's going to turn what should be a 20-30 second intro into a 2 minute blowhard-fest with some unnecessary pedantic quip that sucks the energy out of the room.

As far Pearl Jam, liked the performance and I'm not really a huge fan. Usually Vedders "I'm trembling and hugging myself" stage persona like he's suffered through a 15 year bout of cholera grates on me, but he definitely hit the notes and even *gasp* pumped a fist in the air to evoke a sign of youthful exuberance? Wowzers. Ament was definitely channeling Entwhistle.

Old farker Who and Pearl Jam fan...this is a "wish I could have been there" performances...nice. Quadrophenia has always been my favorite Who work, and I like Mr. Vedder and friends more all the time.

I'm not even going to bother reading what I'm sure are a bunch of snarky comments about either The Who, Pearl Jam, or both...I just wanted to say that I saw this performance on TV the other night and thought it was truly farking awesome. That's a hard motherfarker to sing.

Major Who and Pearl Jam fan, really enjoyed that. Added bonus, no Vedder Preach. (Unlike Sean Penn who cant seem to help himself...farktard)

The Who, one of the most overrated bands since Led Zeppelin. But Led Zeppelin were good.

BUT, yes, Keith Moon was a great drummer. But this is just STUPID:

See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me, heal me, heal me.

Man that deaf dumb and blind boy can sure play a mean pinball.

I once saw Guided By Voices do a surprisingly good cover of that. In retrospect, though, I'm not sure if was actually that great, or if I was just a bit flabbergasted by the audacity of it -- it seemed really out of left field to me at the time, so it caught me off guard.

I've never understood Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder is one of the worst singers in music history and inspired legions of douchebaggery directly. Not a shock to see them covering The Who though, since every song of their either sounds like The Who coming out of my ass or Neil Young coming out of my ass. Except that one song that sounds like Jimi Hendrix coming out of my ass (you know the one) and Do The Evolution, which sounds nothing like Pearl Jam.

Your ass must be seriously humongous to have so much stuff coming out of it. Maybe you should consider changing your diet?

Actually... that was at Mudfest, Gimli, Manitoba [about 90 mins north of Winnipeg.]
I don't think they never actually played winnipeg in 1993.
The believe first time they played there was a year or two ago...

I said it sounds like that. If The Who actually were coming out of my ass, I'd record it and make a mint selling it as the new Pearl Jam album.

The song I've never heard before so I don't really know what to think of the cover.

Here you go -- this is the original studio version. The big difference to me is that Daltrey's wailing seems much less labored than with Eddie Vedder doing it -- Roger does it so effortlessly. Eddie's hitting all the notes, but he's really having to work his ass off.

Thresher 2008-07-20 08:08:17 PM
fark me that was an incredible cover of an incredible song. Wow. MUCH better on my computer and altec lansings than my crappy 13 inch tv with its 2 inch speaker the night it aired.

NeedlesslyCanadian [TotalFark] 2008-07-20 08:29:12 PM
My god Eddie Vedder farking sucks, PJ would be a great band if they fired his talentless ass.

Hibno 2008-07-20 11:13:15 PM
I think Pearl Jam did the best cover performance of the night. They are passionate about the Who's music, and it really showed.

I wish there was more actual Who, though. Nobody can sing those songs like Roger, and Pete is a great guitar player. I think since the Who is essentially the two of them, they could have had the other bands come on and play with Pete and Roger themselves, then have their actual backing band come on to finish out the show.
