JACKSON COUNTY (WLOX) -- Is 19 years in prison sufficient punishment for killing another human being? Apparently, at least in one case, Governor Barbour thinks so. The governor has decided to commute the sentence of Michael David Graham.

Graham was convicted 19 years ago of killing his ex wife, Adrienne Graham. She was at a red light in downtown Pascagoula on April 7th, 1989, when her ex-husband pulled up in his car, grabbed his 12 gauge shotgun, and shot his wife to death.

Sheriff Mike Byrd said he was stunned when he learned of Graham's release.

"I could not believe it. I don't care how rehabilitated he might be, he deserves to stay in jail," the sheriff told WLOX News.

Also angry about the release is William Purchis, the brother-in-law of Adrienne Graham.

"He had been stalking her for three years," Purchis said. "I was very angry, but not surprised that he killed my sister in law."

Gautier Mayor Pete Pope was sheriff at the time of the Graham killing.

"This was a slap in the face to the criminal justice system. He should not be released," Pope said.

Graham actually has served as a trusty at the governor's mansion for the past eight years. The governor's office released this statement about the release.

"Historically, governors have reviewed cases like that of Michael Graham, whose conduct as a prisoner earned him the right to work as a trusty at the Governor's mansion, where he has performed well and proven to be a diligent workman. The Governor is giving him a chance through an indefinite suspension of his sentence to start a new life away from Pascagoula and Jackson County, pending his future good behavior. He will continue to be under the supervision of the Mississippi Department of Corrections throughout the period of his suspension of sentence, as though he was on parole."

Graham is not allowed to return to Jackson County. Sheriff Byrd said if Graham does come back, he will be arrested and sent back to jail.

The main problem with this case is that there aren't two people on death row.
