Because 75% of people hate gays and figure they will get killed.

good gravy, has it been that long? now i feel old.

Just to throw this out there, if you support gays serving openly in the military, and openly gay men showering with straight men, do you support women showering with the men?

BGates [TotalFark] 2008-07-19 03:18:38 PM
nekom: do you support women showering with the men?

I try to shower with women (only the wife now) as much as I can.

Do you REALLY wanna share a shower with an Army chick? I'd rather take my chances with teh gheys - at least I'm reasonably certain my peen will still work afterward.

/might not be able to sit or bend at the waist for a few days

heh, maybe a good point there. But that is one of the leading arguments against gays openly serving, that the akwardness would carry itself from the shower to the battlefield. I'm not sure it's entirely a bullshiat argument either, there might be something to be said for it.

You would have to specify who's army. Have you seen the pics of Israel's army chicks?

Didn't they use a similar arguement when it came to allowing blacks to serve alongside whites, or women with men?

I'm not sure it's entirely a bullshiat argument either, there might be something to be said for it.

I've got no problem with gays in the military. In fact, I'm pretty sure that nearly a third of our armed forces have teh ghey (cough, Navy, cough)

/gay for Bridget doesn't count......right?

Capital A in my post should imply US Army. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Well it's a little bit different there, the color is different but the equipment is about the same.

I hope they leave it as is, especially if there's a draft. Cause if either of my kids get drafted I am so outing them.

/they're 7 & 3 now so I have a while
//other then that, in favor of letting gays serve, get married and all the other fabulous stuff

My grandfather fought in WWII and there were gays back then. Basically the attitude people had was live and let live. That queer (his words) might be the one who shoots the sniper who was gunning for you. He said there were no problems. You knew who they were but you left them alone and they left you alone.

King Something [TotalFark] 2008-07-19 05:03:25 PM
eqtworld: if you don't think 30% of Navy guys have given a handjob to someone after being at sea for months......

"Only" 30%?

After being at sea for "months" (as opposed to "days")?

/Suffice to say, the Village People did not help dispel the stereotype.

burndtdan 2008-07-19 05:04:41 PM
eqtworld: In other words it is basically open right now.

so long as the punishment for being open is codified to be dismissal, it isn't open. i agree with the don't ask part, it's the don't tell part that's asinine.

One of my best friends in the Army was gay. Everyone knew it. It wasnt a big deal, and he understood that if he got hurt in Iraq that people might be hesitant to deal with him if he was bleeding. Two tours in Iraq and luckily he didn't get hurt.

A lot of the females in the Army are gay too. I would say at least 20% are gay and up to 40% were bi. Working in HQ you pretty much knew who was what.

Gays have served in the military as long as there has been a military. All countries and wars. There's just a few who decide to make a bigger issue of it.

It's too bad we will never know how many gays saved the lives of straights during battle. And vise-versa.

xtex 2008-07-19 07:27:49 PM
I'm still not sure what the straight guys are afraid of. We don't go after straight guys... because they're STRAIGHT. There's no point, and there's a decent chance of getting your ass kicked if you make a move on a straight guy.

The only thing is that HIV/AIDS is still a predominately gay disease. So if you get shot or blown up and someone doesn't have gloves or some other protection you will probably not get the appropriate help. Other than that when I was in the military no one cared.

It should really be up to the rank and file. If it would hurt morale, then it's a no go. The military is not the right place for social experiments. Although that ship appears to have sailed.

Hopefully the majority of servicemen and women won't mind if openly gay soldiers, etc., openly serve. I'm not confident though.

That said, I'm sure the rank and file would not have wanted blacks in the military back in 1900 or so. So I admit my position is somewhat inconsistent.

rumpelstiltskin 2008-07-19 08:15:06 PM
That unit Xerxes had, the Fabulous 10,000, or whatever they were called, was supposed to be pretty fearsome.
In any case, I think we should interpret the poll results as "75% support anybody but me should serve in the military".

Easy fix. Test everyone for HIV (straight guys included) and anyone positive doesn't go into combat zones. Unnecessary risk to the rest of the squad.

A friend of a friend (of a friend... etc) knew a guy who wanted to work for Cirque Du Solei, performing in a highbar routine. He was gay and HIV positive, so the company said that he was a risk to the other performers (anything that rough on the hands means blood in a lot of cases) and he had to be limited to a solo or nothing. Of course he sued because he wanted to be in the group act, and lost.

Nemo's Brother 2008-07-19 08:25:02 PM
President Clinton was so tolerant with gays in that issue. Just shut up and we can pretend that the problem that is you is not there.

nekom: Just to throw this out there, if you support gays serving openly in the military, and openly gay men showering with straight men, do you support women showering with the men?

That would be a valid point, if there weren't already a massive problem with sexual assault with women in the military. But there is, and there's separation of bathrooms and showers for a reason.

When there's large problems of gay rape in the military, you might have an argument.

Gays and bisexuals shower with straights, change in front of them, etc all the time. Welcome to the gym. It's not a problem for them. If you're straight and it's a problem for you? Grow the fark up.

The government should not be allowed to discriminate.

rob.d 2008-07-19 08:46:22 PM
The only straight gays who have issues with gay guys are the ones who have been turn down by both straight females and gay guys.

They've struck out on both fields.

Me, I have been hit on by a gay guy, once, I was actually somewhat shocked but impressed.

/I have seriously nice green eyes, and wear suits a lot. That and I get my hair cut every three weeks.

TMBGfreak 2008-07-19 08:48:15 PM
DADT is such a piece of bullshiat. No matter where you stand on the issue, it's admitting gays are there, just that they shouldn't be oficially acknowledged.

Teh Queerz have been serving and nobody in the military cares. Get over it.

That shower argument is bullshiat, too. These are adults, not middle schoolers. You shower together...big deal. We had a gay guy in my fraternity (he since graduated) and it was nothing more than a source for jokes.

/Gay guys make the best wingman
//Ladies flock, and are dissapointed

OneBrightMonkey 2008-07-19 08:50:27 PM
Why are we (meaning North Americans) culturally incapable of dealing with reality?

Sexual preference is clearly genetically defined, as is hair and eye color, height and propensity towards certain medical afflictions.

Let gay Americans marry, let Gay Americans serve proudly in our military, let gay Americans just be Americans.

I'm a straight dude, and I can't imagine why anyone would oppose equality for human beings who are in love with other human beings who happen to have the same body parts.

It's dumb.

Jesus was a man of compassion and I doubt he would ostracize anyone.

Guess what, they serve anyway. And everyone knows they're gay. And not many give a shiat.

Now if there was an Anti-Irritating-Asshole Policy I'd be all for that.
Even though it would instantly decimate the Uniformed Serviced leaving only 10 E2s, 2 E4s and 1 O3 to run it all.

Can we farking grow up already? Isn't there enough real shiat to worry about nowadays?
