Maybe it'll turn a little west... haven't had a hurricane/tropical storm in CT in a long time.

Not likely. NHC predicts the storm only has a 3 day life span before the approaching front absorbs it.

Nice. Just close enough to really drive up the humidity where I am to make it feel like a swamp, but not close enough to bring some rain for the vegetable garden. Well buggery.

Hurricanes during hurricane season? Next they'll reporting about heavy snow in the Midwest next winter.

I am so glad my trip to Charleston isn't until another week. Either way, it's just a two hour drive from where I'm at now. I'd stay for the free car wash. I need one bad.

Of course gas prices will go up - it might rain in the same time zone as an oil refinery.

*facepalm* for the bullshiat that oil companies shovel in our direction.

Just a quick thx for keeping up these past few years. I even passed it along to the safety committee for several of our Gulf Coast offices. One stop shopping is sweet.

I was a PL at a customer site on the NC coast when we got a call that our bags were packed by the hotel we were in and that there was a manditory evacuation. We joked about it and called back to the office for instructions. The boss was a real scum sucking low life ex-CIA person who survived by never making a decision. So on the speakerphone in front of the customer, I asked Bill what our instructions were. He replied that he would bring it up at the 2:PM staff meeting. I repeated my message - the hurricane was hitting at 10:AM. He replied that it was a staff meeting question and the staff meeting was at 2:PM. Customer, my team, all were screaming laughing in the background. So we called the contract administrator (ex-AF) and went "Caroline - hutticane is coming in - what are our options?". The reply was "Get the H*LL OUT OF THERE". Followed up by - gimmee 2 minutes. In 90 seconds the call came back which said that the consortium boss said "GET THE H*LL OUT and all costs were covered except for one of my guys who was NOT allowed to get PPV p*rn in whatever hotel we ended up in". I made sure that my (major defense contractor) company had a broadcast email over the fact that the boss could not make a decision.

Ashtrey 2008-07-19 04:36:28 PM
I used to live near Myrtle Beach, an no don't panic for hurricanes. We have hurricane parties, and yes some people do surf in them. Only way to get a decent wave over there I'd assume.

Worst I've done is play basketball outside during one. Fun to judge for the wind.

pisceandreamer 2008-07-19 04:42:58 PM
I'm down in OBX right now and it should pretty much be right on top of us right around this time tomorrow. Not enough for an evac, but should be interesting nonetheless.

/yeah, I'll probably be out on the beach checking out the surf
//not stupid enough to try to actually *surf* whatever comes in, but I'm sure there will be folks out there trying

I do miss living in the South. I was in SC for Hurricane Hugo in '88 and had moved to NC in time for Hurricane Fran in '96. In fact, I dressed as Fran for Halloween that year.

I'm sure hurricanes suck for those who get hurt or sustain property damage. But if neither one of those things happen, hurricanes are just plain fun. The weather itself is exciting, and the next day is always gorgeous, sunny, and cloud-free. Plus you get to meet all your neighbors because no one has electricity so everyone gets all their beef/chicken/seafood out of the freezer and starts grilling it out in their driveways, and all are welcome to partake. Post-hurricane parties are always about grilled food and warm beer, and I'm OK with that.

damageddude [TotalFark] 2008-07-19 05:05:04 PM
YouWokeTheBaby: tropical storm surf is usually sloppy and not worth the effort, IMHO

Where the storm is yeah, but go a few hundred miles up the coast, say Maryland, Delaware, NJ or even Long Island and I bet it will be pretty good for the surfers. Other than that, I was at the shore the other day (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) and I saw a sign that said the ocean temp was still in the upper 60s.

/not a surfer

My band is playing a bar downtown Raleigh tonight. The crowd will either be KILLER 'cause everyone will come in from the rain or it'll be empty as nobody will want to be out partying.

/Yes, I said, "either it will be good or it will be bad."

OK - stupidity on my part.
I picked up a sunday newspaper from Charleston, SC to help decide if we would be moving there (BAD MISTAKE - we did. Wife still calls our time there "living in exile". First words out of her mouth when our first was born were "This means we are leaving for a decent school system". And her from KY. Anyway - I picked up the newspaper a month after Hugo went through, and mentioned to the wife how cheap firewood was. Which led to her pointing out a huge "DUH" moment.
