This is because GM lineworkers need to learn a better trade. Robots and/or Chinese people can do the same task for a whole lot cheaper. This is the problem with the American auto industry - overpaid labor.

Hell, I even remember Obama saying something along those lines once (during the primaries of course), and he's a socialist for pete's sake!

I'll extend a liberal olive branch and say subby's headline is a weak critique.

ZachF81: overpaid labor.

This is why socialism requires the world to participate. It's easy to undercut the free-market by having it compete with slavery*. And it's easy to undercut socialism by having it compete with slavery*. This is why advanced countries have minimum standards at the national/federal level.

Anyway, it feels like this is just rehashing the late-19th and early-20th century arguments against raising labor standards.

*The definition of slavery being up for grabs between those that support negative liberty and those that support positive liberty

I'll point out that McCain is a very rich politician more concerned with taking care of other rich people's interests than with anyone who has to hold a job in order to survive.

And no, I don't think Obama is any different.

Probably because the line workers have to back Obama or face the wrath of the socialist Democrat-loving UAW.

So... I'm not the only one.

The Arizona senator toured the facility with GM officials before the event. He came to talk about his incentives for next-generation vehicles and the need to move to new technology such as the Chevrolet Volt.

Wouldn't the "incentive" be that gas is really expensive and people want to buy electric cars?

they are talking about the tax/rebate incentives that will lead people to actually consider paying $30,000 for a Chevy instead of $22,000 for a Toyota or Honda.

Umm, this was all about the Volt, so the snark about blue collar workers is crap. He was there at the Technology Center discussing auto technology.

Remove all Republicans: baorao: I don't know why, but I envision the Chevy Volt as a huge, embarrassing failure.

That's probably why.

On the other hand, it's just another example of why the Republicans are the party of the overbearing overpaid executives while the Democrats represent the real people who actually build cars. Respect the doers, not the thinkers.

Without the thinkers the doers would not have anything to build, but without the doers the thinkers cannot have anything built.

It takes both.

The more that I read from you the more I envision you as a triple reverse conservative troll that learned what socialism is by reading Rand.

Not necessarily. I think they have some good ideas with the hybrid Tahoe and some of their other models. But they seem to be trying to look at all the money they're losing and make it all back in one year. $51,000 for the hybrid Tahoe? Thats a $13,000 premium over the regular engine. $30,000 for the Volt? If they can even make that price tag its a hefty premium compared to other hybrids for a car that might not perform any better than whats out there now.

GM strategy = mediocre
GM execution = terrible

If I were McCain, I'd also focus on the educated, since only a fool would vote for a democrat and only an imbecil would vote for Obama - a man of no substance, but with a charming and glowing personality. And what do we know about charming personalities? We know everything we need to know from Jules Winnfield:

Vincent Vega: Ahh, so by that rational, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?
Jules Winnfield: Well, we'd have to be talking one charming mother-farking pig.

Obama is not a charming mutherfarking pig, thus leaving him as yet another filthy politician. He's just a lame democrapic candidate with empty promises and a lack of any plan for progress. But he does have TONS of big talk.

You may have a point subby if mccains trip said he was going to talk to real blue collar workers.

Did he?

He was talking about ending dependency on foreign oil, and Joe Sixpack on the line isn't going to be the one to invent the technology to do that.

If Obama had gone, it would have been a tribute to his innovative thinking and promotion of alternative energy research.

Give me a break.

GM's Design Dome is in the Tech center. It's the most recognizable GM landmark and the best place to hold a speech for a large audience. But don't let that little fact get in the way of your McCain bashing.

That's probably true, I'm sure American autoworkers had some love for their German brothers back in the day. I wonder who their bosses supported in that election...

Subby fails with the headline. I've been to the GM Tech Center and it's full of plenty of dumbasses (albeit with plenty of vacancies coming up). Hell, they farm out most of their real product development to vendors anyways.

McCain has asked me to talk to you about free trade, blue collar workers. Many of your jobs be long to me and your family is in debt to my country also. Please elect McCain so I may total own you country and I will give you discounted WII games as well and free chinese checkers, Shrimp Fri Ri, and and discounted MMA pay per view. Obama is not good. DarthBrooks: Wouldn't the "incentive" be that gas is really expensive and people want to buy electric cars?

That's not the kind of incentive he means. You're talking about the incentives consumers need to buy electric cars - he's talking about the incentives that manufacturers need to make them. In other words, generous subsidies - er, carefully targeted tax relief.

helix400: So the future of America is with high-school educated manufacturing?

America's manufacturing sector is going to be saved by autistic people.

McCain just buy a white coat and go inside, like Bush has done.

Saiga410 2008-07-18 05:15:54 PM
helix400: So the future of America is with high-school educated manufacturing?

With the proper manufacturing engineering work, yes. The labor does not need a high degree of education to do the work as long as your processes are sound. This is why it is so cheap to outsource manufacturing jobs while maintaining some a reasonable expectancy of quality.

The real work is done by the grey collar jobs. But take this with a grain of salt because I am bias in this area.

At least a doctorate? Is there something more than that?

And I knew a guy that worked at the tech center, had only a high school education, but was an idiot savant when it came to engines. He paid his dues in other ways.

Either way, his talk is encouraging to everyone Moore-ans and Kool-Aid drinkers and in times like this, we need a president who can encourage and guide us tell us what we want to hear, not one who sounds like a trained monkey when he speaks.
