(Fox News) Obvious Obama travels to foreign lands and is followed by an entourage of fawning network news anchors. McCain takes three similar trips, not a single anchor. Media bias FTW   (foxnews.com) divider line 625

Obama is the hot story right now. Even Fox News is going with him. Where were they when McCain went? Media bias perception is more accurate.

baorao 2008-07-18 09:29:16 AM
So if Obama f*cks up on this trip and all three networks are on the scene to cover it, is McCain still going to complain about bias?

Skleenar 2008-07-18 09:33:44 AM
Then: "Mr. Obama isn't qualified because he hasn't even gone to Iraq recently."

Now: "Why are you all covering Mr. Obama's trip to Iraq?!?"

baorao: So if Obama f*cks up on this trip and all three networks are on the scene to cover it, is McCain still going to complain about bias?

It would be impossible for Obama to f*ck up. He has already laid out what he will do, the press is on board, he will 'listen' to front line troups, then the press will adapt his message to fit.

Yeah, I'd call this bias in favor of McCain. They aren't even going to try to report on the bad and stupid stuff he's saying, but I bet damn sure that if Obama misspeaks once it will lead the news for 3 nights.

He doesn't even need to mess up. Remember when Pelosi went to Syria? One thing the right knows better than the left is that if they all cry about the same thing at the same time, the media will report it as the truth. NPR already said this morning that Obama has never been to Iraq, something not even McCain has been ballsy enough to make up.

Maybe if McCain didn't challenge him to go overseas this wouldn't be a big deal?

McCain goes to South America.

Obama goes to Europe.

Where would you rather go? You think the hotels in South American are comparable to the ones in Europe? Anchors like vacations as much as the rest of us.

For what it's worth, neither McCain or Obama should be campaigning internationally, and I hope someone calls them out on it besides me. There's some serious economic uncertainty going on, and now isn't the time for either candidate to be out of the country.

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2008-07-18 10:39:03 AM
The media ignoring or downplaying McCains numerous gaffes, ties to corrupt politicians and lobbyists, and flip-flops has been a theme this year.

So please don't cry media bias. McCain is getting a free pass on damn near everything he says, regardless of whether its true or even right.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-07-18 10:47:52 AM
If the media has been covering McCain's South America trip maybe we would have been regaled with more stories about his concern over violins in Oaxaca.

Code_Archeologist [TotalFark] 2008-07-18 11:04:52 AM
McCain should be blaming his own amateur-show media handling, instead of a perceived media bias. The Obama campaign invited all the major new organizations to join him on his trip... McCain chose not to invite the media for his trip through the Middle East.

McCain is hoping that the media will remain friendly and give him free coverage, Obama is actively courting the press and being rewarded by favorable coverage for doing so. McCain has nobody to blame for his lack of coverage than himself.

McCain has often referred to the press as "his base." This is no different than complaining that the other candidate is eating into that base.

Oh get over it. Nobody cares about McCain in a media sense. He's an old, boring man. This is like biatching that Lindsa Lohan gets all the press while poor Angela Lansbury is ignored. Yeah, it might be BS, but they're selling stories and trying to get people to watch and McCain doesn't sell in the same way.

Wander00 2008-07-18 11:25:42 AM
A bunch of reporters and news anchors following McCain around would look too much like a death watch.

downstairs [TotalFark] 2008-07-18 11:28:00 AM
I'll admit the media is so obviously biased towards The Great Obama, but there is nothing wrong with this.

McCain is a foreign policy guy, has been for decades, and has made similar trips for decades. Everyone knows his deal, its not interesting.

Obama has never done such a thing, and its considered his weak point.

If, for example, McCain does some tour to reach out to the black communities in various inner cities- the media will certainly follow him around. Obama? Not so much- he's done it a million times.

Non story. Move along...

moops 2008-07-18 11:49:41 AM
Wait, I thought the liberal hate machine said for the last 10 years that MCCAIN is the one who is the darling of the liberal media?

Can't they get their liberal media darlings right?

It's going to be difficult for Obama to sneek off to a Mosque with all of the news people around.

Eidolon 2008-07-18 11:52:22 AM
In McCain's first trip to the region after securing his party's nomination, he DIDN'T TAKE REPORTERS WITH HIM. It was McCain's policy that made it difficult for reporters. Obama's flying them around. Although it's nice that McCain can turn his poor PR move into a claim that the media is biased.

Network bias? Excuse me, but Fox news is the one writing about selling toilets that even drug addicts refuse to use on Ebay on the same page as they are talking about Obama.

It's global recession, not just domestic recession. You people complaining about the media tearing B-Man a new one for any mis-speak were probably the ones laughing every time Bush made a mis-speak. No one is perfect, especially politicians. Every politician will look like an idiot if we dwell on any mis-speak they make with the modern media and their outlets.

Maybe the Iraq trip could have been a bigger deal to those outraged, but c'mon... Columbia? Canada?

the media follows where the news is at, and since McCain is just a repeat of everything we've had and heard for the previous 8 years, it's not with him.
Obama is a novelty, someone new and exciting. people are voting in him because he inspires him. the people voting for McCain are voting for him because he isn't going to rock the boat much or because they are against Obama.

/as for Michelle.. Obama should just get over it.

tuxq 2008-07-18 11:56:24 AM
Let me be the first one on fark to speak how I truly feel about Obama.

I bought his stickers, I followed him for a short while, but he's full of it.

He whines and whines about changing and changing and change and changes and more changing... But he doesn't really tell us how he plans to execute these "changes" and how he as a president has no real power -- that's Congress.

You Sheeple that would follow him to the grave are falling for the oldest trick in the book... which is why most of his followers are of the younger generation.

Do your research, Democrats always promise change, they always have--but they never follow through. Either because they no longer care or because they don't have much power. The ideas may sound brilliant, but he only has an IDEA, not a PLAN--huge difference.

Anyone else notice that in the last two days the Bush administration has A) begun diplomatic talks (if limited) with Iran and B) has starting talking about an "aspirational timetable for troop draw-down in Iraq?" What the hell? Are they actually taking hints from the popularity of the Obama campaign and giving the people what they want? On the other hand, they could be half-assing both things with the intent of being able to say, "See...diplomacy doesn't work. Time to bomb Iran and elect McCain." Interesting times, these are...

I listened to NPR on the way to work this morning and they reported that Obama has been to Iraq but not Afghanistan. Maybe they made an error and corrected it, or perhaps you misheard them.

You're right. I wish the media would do more in depth reporting about John McCain's favorite pastor.
