These "dropout" rates are usually a misrepresentation. They consider my husband a "dropout" because he took the California Equivalency Exam at 16, got a state diploma, and went to college two years early. They clump a lot of people into that category that really don't belong there.

BarrRepublican 2008-07-18 11:28:18 AM
Maybe they can get a job soliciting door-to-door for magazine companies.

More dropouts = more money/power for him. It is the American Way.

mrbill1 2008-07-18 11:29:46 AM
Mayor wants more state money to come his way, or the state to step in...either way, problem solved. This is typical. If the job gets done, obviously, your resources are efficient - if not, you need more resources. There remains no impetus to work well or get the job done, as it will cut the funding.

Weeps.

I'm sure most people don't fit this category.

TFA said numbers don't count people who drop out before 9th grade. Damn, before ninth grade. How are these people supposed to through life without a firm grasp of very poorly taught world history and without having dissected a frog?

I doubt a significant number of "dropouts" left to go to college early. Especially in Los Angeles.

Wrong. They won't dig ditches. They'll sell narcotics and assault and kill other sellers of narcotics.

atlanta_ufo 2008-07-18 11:43:23 AM
And they want only parents who are certified to be able to home school their children. They should focus on finding ways to keep the kids already in public school from dropping out before trying to force the home schoolers into the schools.

Damn, and they're AGAINST a vouchers program?

Goes to show that throwing tax $'s at education doesn't work if the system's totally farked up to begin with. It's like gassing up a car with a farked transmission.

I would wager that
I'm curious about how they take transfers into account. If a student has to change schools because the parents are moving, then that may be counted as a dropout as well. So maybe +/- 5% may be a reasonable margin of error

"I'm heartened they are highlighting the dropout issue but I know it is higher than they are saying," Villaraigosa said. "We know it's 50 to 60 percent and in some parts of the city 65 or 70 percent."

Care to calculate the cost to our society of these folks? Plus, they breed like Catholics on crack.

Welcome to the new Amerifornia. Coming soon to your town.

I doubt thats enough to sway the pecentage by more than 2(percent) or 3 percent. I honestly didn't realize that drop out rates were as high as they are. This article really should have been tagged "sad."

Villaraigosa is a living caricature of a big-city pol. Instead of actually doing his job, he swans about the city looking for the next photo-op. He's the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral. When he first took office he tried to "take over" the LA Unified School District, but got shot down. God knows what he'd have done had he actually gotten it. Not that the school district isn't a cesspool, but Villaraigosa would be a worse disease, not the cure.

pjbreeze 2008-07-18 12:08:10 PM
I don't know why this article got a dumbass tag, Villaraigosa is right. The drop-out rate is much higher. St. Paul, MN, I've heard 90% in inner school districts. When I lived in Los Angeles, I heard 76% rate in the inner school districts. In Taiwan, The drop out rate is probably around 5% or less, they don't dare quit school.

PerpetualMotion 2008-07-18 12:11:43 PM
Why did the original article use "over 25%" to describe something that is essentially 1/3??? Doesn't anyone understand math anymore? They could have made the point much better by saying 1 out of every 3 students drop out.

Sometimes I think that the education institutions in this country are just biding time until the results of their incompetence are the only ones in the media and will not understand how lousy a job they are doing, and therefore won't find anything negative to report!

Villaraigosa said dropout rates are one of the factors he will look at with his partnership schools. "We are going to track the dropout rates and focus on what it takes to keep kids in school. Our goal is to graduate every student and see them go on to college."

FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL

Not all kids need or want to go to college. Putting them into an educational system that stress college will fail to serve them. Teach the one that want to do honest, good paying blue collar work the basic skills to be successful. Teach them office skills, general woodworking and shop skills and useful everyday math and english.

The sooner we get over this stupid notion that you have to be degreed to have any success, the soon we have more kids that get value out of school.
