Wasn't he born in 1948, making it hard for him to personally recall those periods in history? And also, are those events even related to the energy and climate issues he is talking about in the article?

Robert1966 [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 02:11:50 PM
Actually, subby, the world wars weren't like that for the US. We were in the first one for only about a year and a half and the second one took us out of the Depression.

/or are you German?

Considering the Great Depression was exacerbated by the "dust bowl era" in the midwest when poor farming techniques severely damaged airable land and rendered it useless and caused a massive displacement of humanity to western states, well, I think you could make an argument for that, yes.

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 02:20:55 PM
I had no idea that the great depression, the revolutionary and civil war or WWI and II all happened simultaneously. Holy crap, what a day that must have been.

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 02:24:13 PM
It would make history a lot easier if all that shiat happened at the same time.

To be fair, since he wasn't alive during any of those, and his time machine isn't finished yet, he'd have a hard time remembering them.

John McCain on the other hand...

No, no. Al Gore invented the internet. Dr. Emmet Brown invented the flux capacitor. You've mixed them up.

MePod [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 02:55:21 PM
You know, there were plenty of problems in the 70's that submitter probably could've gotten away with referencing without looking too stupid. Oh well. Live and learn

I thought WWI and WWII for great for America? WWII help lift out of that depression and make the US the most powerful nation on Earth. Plus they completely owned the Nazis. And who doesn't love owning Nazis?

Could be he meant he didn't remember those times because he wasn't born yet? He may know about them, and he may have read about them, buy he can't personally remember them.

Right, subby?

Wait, am I too late to come in here and point out that Gore isn't old enough to remember all of that, and that these events all happened at the same day on what must have been the worst week of Mondays in the history of the world?

THANK YOU!

It kind of bothers me that it took four posts for someone to point out subby's misunderstanding of the word "simultaneously"...

This is truly one of the dumbest headlines I've ever seen.

valloned [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 03:47:55 PM
Subby fails...miserably.

Had we fought WWII during the great depression while our president burned $5/gallon gas to travel by boat to where the arctic ice-cap used to be before it melted, took a giant shiat on the constitution, then told us that the japanese attack on perl harbor never happened and we fuaght a war based on a false premise and the "best intelligence available at the time"...well, then I'd say our current situation was nothing special....

CravenMorehead 2008-07-17 04:01:21 PM
Correct, Gore was not alive for any of those so he could not have remembered them.

The United States should be making all of its electricity with renewable and carbon-free energy in 10 years, former Vice President Al Gore said Thursday.

This, the lead, is Gore's dumbass moment. If we should be carbon-free we should be carbon-free now. But we can't do it now, and we can't do it in ten years. It's not like inventing the Internet where you throw small change at nerds and stand back. Replacing most of the nation's power plants is a huge task. We can't even finish arguing about whether to build one power plant in that time.

If you want to try, you need to get a lot of nuclear power plants built in 10 years. The only way to do that, and it probably isn't enough, is to exempt them from environmental regulations and third party lawsuits over licenses and such while requiring the NRC to act quickly on all applications.

madmann [TotalFark] 2008-07-17 04:44:11 PM
In other news, McCain lived through all the examples stated and can't remember what he had for breakfast this morning.

My friends.... (creepy smile)... that's not pancakes you can believe in.

when we were challenged to send a man to the moon in 10 years, not only could we not do it, no one could. it had never been done, by anyone. we did it.

he wants to challenge us to do something that has already happened in other countries. for farks sake, france figured it out already.

the only reason we can't or won't do it is we're too busy telling ourselves we can't or won't do it.

I was just at an investment office yesterday, and in that room there was a large poster tracking the Dow since 1920s, while mentioning the one world story for that year. Reading all the problems we've had since 1920s, I can't believe how good we have things now.

yea i think those times were a lot worse than what we'll see in our lifetime.

- worldwide water shortages
- rising level swallowing places like florida and manhattan (but who needs these places?)
- completely altered food chains that affect the human diet around the world
- the slowing of ocean currents leading to the longest droughts you will ever see. EVAR.

but all that crap aint too bad

Basically, this. As usual, politicians fleece the public for money while engineers and other technical professionals have an uphill battle securing any public funds to actually fix the problems.

//Good thing private industry has a vested interest in resource management.

gruntmints 2008-07-17 05:16:09 PM
People in here are actually suggesting that he meant literally in his life time? If he meant "in my life time" he would have said "in my life time." But it's fun to pick and choose when to take someone literally and when not to!
