I see what you did there...some bands from the 90's are the new vintage.

F*ckin A!

Metallica sucks. They don't deserve to polish Maiden's balls. Of course, modern "heavy metal" is all pretty bland, thanks to Metallica's by-the-numbers grinding.

Eeueugugh. Do not want. Time to go listen to the original - I don't have the Maiden album the original is on, though I have the next six.

....

I like the original. Not love at first sight, but really prefer Bruce's voice.

Wow, the opening sounds like their own Creeping Death.

ekdikeo4 2008-07-17 07:44:23 AM
Ordius: I always heard the influence of this song in Creeping Death, I really like how you can definitely tell though, from this version, that it is an Iron Maiden song, being played by Metallica, it really captures both influences very well. Hetfield is so, so, SO very wrong to even attempt to sing it, though. They should've paired the band up with someone else to sing it, really. I wonder how hard Sebastian Bach would kick ass doing some Maiden.

I was a Maiden fan before I was a Metallica fan. I'm diggin' this cover. I thought it was well done. May actually have to download buy this.

I disagree, although Metallica is admittedly my favorite band mostly because of the distinct voice that Hetfield has.
I really think they did an outstanding job on this.

At work, and I can't do the YouTube thing here... anyone want to clue me in on which Maiden song it is?

That said, there' nothing wrong with Metallica's cover songs; they haven't written anything original that's worth a damn in forever.

Sounds like Iron Maiden except without the flavor, and the talented singer. D-

I prefer Opeth's version, but this wasn't bad.

I've always liked metallica's covers from back in the garage days/stone cold crazy days

Bondidude 2008-07-17 09:09:04 AM
I'm enjoying it so far.

I may have to pick up the new Metallica album when it comes out. Apparently they've gone back to 8 minute songs with solos and such.

Really? Okay... that's not one that I would have guessed, although they did a decent version of Astronomy by BOC, so maybe.

I still have no good expectations for the new Metallica album.

I'm a diehard fan, I've stuck with them through their Bob Rock album, but I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when I heard about Rick Rubin signing on. Everything that guy touches turns to gold.

*Fingers crossed*

Crude 2008-07-17 12:45:56 PM
So, this is what Hetfields' voice has become. That's a damn shame because he sings every song this same way...very "lounge singer"-ish.

I listened to the Maiden original after I heard Metallica's version and I have to say that Metallica failed miserably on this one. They tried to make a somewhat tender song into some kind of monster.

Subby - this is NOT good. It's horrible. Di'Anno was one of the ballsiest singers of the NWOBHM era. Hetfield sounds like a whiny emo kid.

This is horrible.

It will never be 1985 again and James will never be able to sing like he did on Ride the Lightning but I sincerely hope that Metallica gives the old school fans something to be proud of.

And for what it's worth I think the Remember Tomorrow cover is pretty good. It's going straight on the ipod.

Like a whiny emo kid? How old are you, dude? You're either 15 or 55. Hetfield was kicking ass long before - yes, before even RITES OF SPRING. Don't bother with your asinine comparisons.

You know who else kicked ass? Elvis. Elvis kicked a dozen different kinds of ass. If there was ass to be found, Elvis kicked it.

You know how Elvis was when he died? He was a bloated, drugged out shadow of his former self.

Just because someone used to kick ass doesn't mean that they have kicked ass since the 1980s.

Valid point. I'm not saying he hasn't done some questionable shiat in his day. (I try to block Load, Reload, and Some Kind of Monster out of my memory). But does he sing like a whiny emo kid? Naples. Besides, they still kick farkin ass when they play live, which is really the most important thing - I think they have to slide a lot farther down the shiat pile before they reach washed-up Elvis status, c'mon now.

From Kerrang.com --

The track listing for Maiden heaven is as follows:

01, Black Tide - Prowler
02, Metallica - Remember Tomorrow
03, Avenged Sevenfold - Flash Of The Blade
04, Glamour Of The Kill - 2 Minutes To Midnight
05, Coheed And Cambria - The Trooper
06, Devildriver - Wasted Years
07, Sign - Run To The Hills
08, Dream Theater - To Tame A Land
09, Madina Lake - Caught Somewhere In Time
10, Gallows - Wrathchild
11, Fightstar - Fear Of The Dark
12, Machine Head - Hallowed Be Thy Name
13, Trivium - Iron Maiden
14, Year Long Disaster - Running Free
15, Ghostlines - Brave New World

/They couldn't get better bands than this for a Maiden tribute??
//Slayer should have covered "Iron Maiden"
///That would have been the awesome

Gharlans 2008-07-17 08:52:46 PM
I'm sorry...
I don't get it.
How, in any measurable way, was that "good."
It sounded like recycled, everyday metal.
Hetfield's voice is mediocre at best.
Ulrich has nothing left other than a whiny temper.

Now, if you get Jim James singing some Iron Maiden, it might kick arse...
