The people most responsible for winning the Cold War?

Pope John Paul II
Harry S Truman
Ronald Reagan
Margaret Thatcher

US taxpayers had a large role, many military personnel from all over the globe did also. The good people of East and West Germany had a big role.

Did Springsteen have a bigger role than me? I would say yes. Bigger than those? Not really.

arkansas, the real responsible parties behind "winning" the Cold War were the hapless leaders of the Soviet Union, whose paranoia led them to spend their country into the ground building an unsustainable military. Reagan loved taking credit, but he was just lucky enough for it to happen on his shift.

Where's the credit for me? I watched "Newhart" through the eighties, and that had as much to do with the fall of communism as Springsteen did.

Arkansas nailed it.

Lots of people point to those in the west as responsbile for ending the Cold War, but you have to give Mikhail Gorbachev some credit too. Had there been a different type of leader in power, the end of the war could have been ugly. Gorby has the sense to realize the Soviet system was broken and has the courage to do something about it.

To be fair, Springsteen's version is very clearly "deuce". Manfred Mann's? Come on.

2) Deny the truth
and
3) Deny the truth.

The DBS 2008-07-16 09:38:24 PM
I deserve more credit than Bruce. I got a nice letter from Uncle Sam saying thanks for winning the cold war to prove it.

Soviets were spending like drunken sailors. The SDI freaked them out and pushed them over the edge. Even Gorby said that. Hate Reagan if you like, but his pushing that program had a heck of a lot to do with it.

The DBS 2008-07-16 09:55:47 PM
Shouldn't the other defective economic systems have already have failed by now. What's keeping them afloat if it's the system itself that causes failure instead of outside stimulus?

Inigo_Montoya 2008-07-16 09:56:54 PM
Ronald Reagan may have had a role in ending the Cold War, but his belligerence and cowboy mentality could just as easily have taken a wrong turn and ended in global thermonuclear war. Not a wise gamble I think. The USSR would've collapsed soon anyway. He just made sure they were broke, hungry, paranoid, and armed to the teeth when it happened.

And a lot of 3rd World people would agree, seeing as Reagan's support of groups he described as "the Moral Equivalent of the Founding Fathers" were going around raping and killing innocent people.

People like Lech Walesa, Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II (and even Bruce Springsteen) deserve as much credit for ending the Cold War as Ronald Raygun. And they did it in a more morally upstanding, and less dangerous, manner.

It all added up to something right?

It had meaning?

After 20 years.

Right?

Right?!?!

Imagine what lost songs and thoughts and beliefs that have died with your parents and grandparents.

FLEAS.

TICKS.

WORMS.

MAGGOTS.

Nothing we do is eternal other than the scars we leave on the face of this planet.

We dance and we struggle against the inevitable death that awaits us all, and in fear, we restrict ourselves.

I challenge you to do something with your life that is outside of what the Illuminati demands of you.

THX-1138 RUN FOR YOU LIFE!

You, are becoming gods.
There's a new master of creation and it's YOU!
You've unraveled DNA,
and at the same time you've cultivated bacteria strong enough to kill every living thing...
you think you're ready for that much power... you lot?
You lot?!

Cheaky bastards,
you're running around science like kids with guns.
Hands up.
Hands up if you think you've got it right.
Yeah there's always one...
I can see ya...
If you want the position of god then accept the responsibility.

If you want to listen to something worthwile about the Berlin Wall, go find a copy of "The Wall" by John Kay. Sadly, it is tough to find the really good Steppenwolf songs.

It's true in that Reagan's support for SDI "pushed them over the edge." But, it's also true that they were going over that edge anyway. It was more like the straw that broke the camel's back.

Hasn't anyone seen the footage of Regan calling for hte wall to come down?

Why does Springsteen get so much credit...for anything? I don't hate his music, and some of his "not filler" is okay, but gee whiz, the guy's an East Coast John Cougar: pandering via vanilla and averageness. Breeze in the trees.

Because he's associated with the left and so it's better for him to get credit for the fall of the USSR (or Gorby, or the pope, hell, even Jimmy farkin' Carter) than The Enemy.

btw, a thought for all you folks - if Bruce WASN'T a spineless butt-monkey, he would not have been allowed to appear in East Germany.

Responding to me really backs up your argument. BTW, I don't think Bruce gets credit for the fall of Gorbachev, the Pope, or Jimmy Carter.

Is the term "spineless butt-monkey" a reference to the size of a man's nose?
