Damn, that's a real piece of rock history there.

How's this for 20/20 hindsight:

My friend saw The Who on their first tour in Tampa (1964?). Back then there was no such thing as security and backstage lists, and my friend just strolled backstage after the show. He happens past a door open to a room, where he sees Pete Townshend, with a smashed guitar on the table. The conversation went something like this:

Steve: Hey, great show.
Pete: Thanks.
Steve: Is that the guitar you smashed up tonight?
Pete: Yeah. You want it?
Steve: Well, it's kinda ruined, isn't it?
Pete: Yeah, I guess so.

Yes, my friend Steve was offered a Pete-smashed guitar circa mid-60's, and he turned it down. You can look at it monetarily, historically, or from a cool factor, and he just fails every which way.

Yep. It's a righty.

One beautiful piece of rock history right there.

Yeah. If I had a friend who ever failed that hard, I'd make giving him no end of shiat about it a full-time job. Of course, what if he HAD taken it? Who'd believe him?

"Hey, Christie's. I have a guitar that was smashed by Pete Townshend forty years ago."

"How do we knw it's not just a smashed-up guitar?"

"Well, I got it from Pete Townshend."

"Uh-huh. Sure. And I suppose you just wandered backstage and he just gave it to you, too."

"That's right!"

Hendrix, who died in 1970, burnt two guitars on stage - he repeated the stunt at a festival later in 1967 - but the one to be auctioned is the only example that survives intact.

Gee, yeah, that "a festival" was only farking MONTEREY you Anglocentric farks. Wankers.

Sure, but they may have to pool all their salaries together, including all the money they make playing in cover bands. After that they may have JUST enough money where selling all of their collective internal organs on the black market would get them a million.

I don't play guitar, but I've always wondered why the complited maneuvers are put on the non-dominant hand. It seems backwards.

Yes, the one Hendrix burned at Monterey. Hendrix gave it to Frank, who stored it for a couple of decades until Dweezil found the pieces and rebuilt it. They had it at auction a few years ago, but I don't think it sold. Not sure if they still have it.

That's a good question. Perhaps because the first guitars were played fingerstyle?

Expect to see it at the "experience music Project" in the comming months. which would be sweet.

By what I understand the Hendrix strat Zappa had was not actually burned at the Miami Pop Festival. It had been burned a year earlier at a performance at the London Astoria in 1967 and was given to Zappa by one of Jimi's roadies at the Miami festival. If that were the case, that doesn't jibe with what the article is saying. There can't be two burned Hendrix strats from the same gig.

I saw a Frankenstein at the Guitar Center. I freaked at first, because it looked so authentic and had a price tag of $25,000.

Turns out it is a replica supposedly made from Eddie's spare parts.

Darn it. My deleted post was for Coronach. As others have mentioned Jimi did restring his guitar, Dick Dale doesn't. He plays a left handed guitar with the strings upside down. I think he also uses .018 gauge for his low E string, normaly it's around .009/.010.

I kind of agree. Of course, I may just be sick of all the little college cover band farkers being like "check it, I can play Hendrix!"

"Oh sure, but can you play Miserlou by Dick Dale?"

Also, just because you own a Hendrix strat doesn't mean you'll be able to play like Hendrix.

Sunburst?

Jimi played 2 guitars at Monterey: an all white one and this one:

Well, technically, from your picture it does look like the guitar he's playing is indeed a left-handed model, but it IS re-strung for a rightie, which is weird. But hey, it obviously works for him, so hey, whatever.

Prince is a badass on the guitar, look up his performance on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when George Harrison was inducted in 2004.

I think a lot of the problem people have with Hendrix is three fold:

1. Presentism
2. Poor Production
3. Drugged up performances.

You really have to judge him in the time and place of his contemporaries, and the state of the art.

Eddie Van Halen sounds like nothing special today. Tom Schultz would be nothing special. Randy Rhodes would be passe. However, when experienced from their time and place...all were very special. Same for Hendrix..maybe even more so. You have to look how they were viewed by their contemporaries and moved the state of the art.

Galaxy of Prawns 2008-07-16 05:35:59 PM
Hendrix's influence is undeniable but the music isn't really so effective to me anymore, except in a time-capsule sort of way. And I'm positive he wouldn't have been so influential had he been playing that amazing stuff in a white t-shirt and jeans, or whatever the hell normal people wore in 1967.

Poor production?

Hendrix "over rated"?

a)you are a non-musician
b)you are utterly clueless to the history and development of rock/pop music
c)you are devoid of class and taste

The total impact and profound influence of Hendrix is basically
immeasurable.
