Wow. I can understand about 3 or 4 of those deserving that honor.

Kiss should be in there, even though I never really liked them. Alice Cooper & Ozzy? ok, yeah. SRV, Journey - maybe.

Nuge is just a nutcase. He was pretty good in his prime, but then he went and did that whiny ass Damn Yankees thing.

Motley Crue & Cars? They're pretty good, but not R&R Hall of Fame good.

Neil Diamond??? What in the blue fark?

SuperCatBarf [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 02:23:05 AM
A giant column of text followed by "sorry, this video is no longer available," followed by another giant column of text about Nugent, with a typically annoying Nugent video available, etc. All the music sucks.

All of it. Journey. Neil Diamond. Deep Purple. Don't bother.

slayer199 [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 02:49:54 AM
Other than Neil Diamond, I like his list.

Nuge should definitely be there...of course, you younger farkers never saw him in his heydey and only think of him as some conservative hunting loon...he's far more than that.

Kiss...most definitley

Cars - Yes

Journey - Maybe

Cooper - Most definitely

Ozzy - Yes

SRV - Yes

Motley Crue - yes

Deep Purple - Maybe.

Otherwise known as "Some guy's list of bands that have one song everyone knows and many others no one cares about"

Seriously? Alice Cooper, Deep Purple... go comb your mullet

Anybody under 30 isn't going to get it anyways, so why bother.

/They all had greatness.

Is it time to trot out the list of prog rock groups that haven't been inducted yet?

earl_k [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 04:07:51 AM
With some of the shiat that is in the RRHOF, it's hard to argue against any of this list. . .even Neil Diamond.

/turn on your heart light

spidermann [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 04:42:48 AM
ALICE COOPER.

Damn hall people....

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 04:44:22 AM
Stevie Ray Vaughan is not in the Hall of Fame?

/wtf?

skribble 2008-07-15 05:55:51 AM
missing Joan Jett. otherwise, a pretty solid list.

/even Neil Diamond
//heartlight, biatches

frostus [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 06:02:07 AM
Those early Cooper albums (Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out) were really really good but after those he turned more commercial and was playing up the Alice character more than he was writing decent tunes. Still, he should be in there for the ground he broke.

Deep Purple should be in there. Most of their material is still awesome to listen to now - especially Machine Head and In Rock. Great musicians all.

The Cars ruled in their day and I think they should be in there. They wrote a ton of great tunes, pioneered a unique sound and blazed a trail with their videos that lots of other bands followed.

SRV? Absolutely.

The rest of the list sucks.

craigdamage 2008-07-15 06:34:37 AM
I hate it when stupid non-musicians write about music.

FTA--on the CARS:

"Even though I don't personally get the appeal of cheesy synthesizer sounds and the nasally voice of Ric Ocasek...."

First, change "cheesy" synthesizer to classic and warm organic vintage analog synthesizer,
and Ben Orr sang most of their songs, not Ocasek.

First three CARS records are absolute masterpieces.

AgentOrangeDrink 2008-07-15 06:54:45 AM
So much fail in that list.

craigdamage 2008-07-15 06:55:08 AM
Simple---the question you ask for each of these artist/bands:

How big an influence?
Did they start a trend?
How many times have they been covered?
Are they "icon" status?

KISS--major icon
ALICE COOPER--super icon, heavily copied and covered
THE CARS--major trend setters
JOURNEY--I hate them but they were kings of 70s MOR-pop-rock
SRV--I don't like him but he is icon of modern blues
DEEP PURPLE--do I even have to explain? There are undiscovered tribes deep in the Amazon who know how to hum "Smoke on the Water"
MOTLEY CRUE--I despise them but....
NUGENT--60s hard-rock trailblazer,70s guitar icon/madman.
OZZY--pure icon and nothing but
NEIL DIAMOND--THIS GUY HAS BEEN COVERED MORE TIMES THAN ALL OF THE ABOVE COMBINED

Dr_J 2008-07-15 07:10:11 AM
The RRHOF has surrendered any legitimacy so long as Stevie Ray is not included.

That_Bob_Guy 2008-07-15 07:34:21 AM
This list is worthless without Chicago

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-07-15 07:40:01 AM
Journey and Motely no, the rest OK (especially DP), but he left out the the two who should be in their place:

www.papermag.com

NO STOOGES, NO PEACE! NO STOOGES! NO PEACE!

and

bluestormmusic.com

These two bands were both way more influential than anyone else on the list.

Neil Diamond is the Jewish Elvis which means he is much like Elvis. Should Elvis not be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?

Great_Milenko 2008-07-15 08:28:55 AM
I'd replace Motley Crue with Rush, but otherwise, this list is pretty much spot on.

The Mad Cockatiel 2008-07-15 08:35:30 AM
Yes, Rush please. However, I understand there's an unwritten "no prog" rule in there...

The 'Mats deserve it and so does Husker Du but they don't have enough album sales to get in.

/Two best american bands of the 80's.

darch 2008-07-15 09:21:57 AM
Any RRHOF list is incomplete and null and void without Rush. Prog, shmog- like them or not, their IMMENSE influence across the rock and roll spectrum CANNOT be denied.
Hell, they were just in Rolling Stone, maybe there's a chance now. I don't, however, think Geddy, Alex and Neil are losing any sleep over it.

Bondidude 2008-07-15 09:24:28 AM
The Cars inspired many during the '80s.

Then Ric Ocasek produced Weezer's first album, which has spawned many, many other bands out of that.

One of my friends actually got me into The Cars because of Ocasek producing Blue Album. I love 'em.

You guys do know that the Cars were aping every british synth/new wave act that was out at that time, right?

I'm certain nobody cares, but I recall The Cars as being the fake America copy of about 20 better bands from the UK. But naturally the one that got American FM radio play (and play, and play, and play)

KingKauff 2008-07-15 09:37:23 AM
I have a feeling that Phish will be in before any of these bands...which is fine by me as they are better than all of them. Yeah,yeah,yeah...I know...stinking hippies/need to shower/patchouli/get a job/yadda yadda yadda.

Generation_D: You guys do know that the Cars were aping every british synth/new wave act that was out at that time, right?

Exactly! Especially their biggest influence, Suicide.

/ wait, Suicide was from NYC...
// and The Cars' first album was released in 1978...
/// so unless you mean Roxy Music I am not sure who you are talking about because the Cars predate Ultravox and Tubeway Army and Human League and (paste from wiki here:) Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, a-ha, A Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, New Order, Thomas Dolby, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Alphaville, Thompson Twins, Bronski Beat, Heaven 17, Howard Jones, ETC ETC ETC

//// so I think you are incorrect

danlpoon 2008-07-15 09:50:14 AM
Yes to "Yes" no to Rush. Rush sucks. Canada does not rock.

And I LOVED The Cars. I like them even more now that they're called Radiohead.

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 09:56:35 AM
Gary Numan / Tubeway Army is first.
Joy Division / Warsaw is first
Magazine / Wire / Buzzcocks were first
And all of those pretty much get their synth in a pop context from
Kraftwerk and Brian Eno.

All the stuff you rattle off would have happened with or without The Cars putting "synth new wave band" into the top ten in America.

Passive Aggressive Larry [TotalFark] 2008-07-15 10:08:09 AM
Oddly enough I just went to the RRHOF this past weekend, and after seeing everyone that is in there I think they usually get it right, for the most part. There were just a few too many really old bands in there, like a few of the ones they've gone back and picked up in recent years because there haven't been enough worthy eligible artists coming up. Of the "classic rock" era they've pretty much got all the greats, even if it is a little heavy on british bands.

But while I was going through the museum I was surprised to find that Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper weren't in there, and you can make a decent case for some of the others on this list. I think if you give it a few years half of those on the list will probably make it in, just like they went back and let in Sabbath and Skynyrd.

What about other futurue Hall of Famers? They are getting into the years when rock was splitting up into all different genres, and the mainstream stuff everyone would know is that 80's crap wuss rock and hair band shiat. It might be tough for them to find enough worthy bands to let in every year, at least until they start hitting the late 80's/early 90's when they can let in Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Pixies, Red Hit Chili Peppers, and some of the other good bands from the time. The Rock Hall loves Eddie Vedder, he's helped induct like 5 different acts and gets a mention several times in random places in the museum, so I bet Pearl Jam is a guarantee. And I'd be really surprised if Nirvana never makes it, because Cobain is already mentioned in different exhibits and nirvana concert footage is seen in some of the videos in the museum already.

Kraftwerk, indeed. Who were influenced by the Velvet Underground.

Conspicuously NOT R&B seems to be the hallmark.

You need to check your facts and timelines:

First Cars LP: May 1978

The First Tubeway Army album was released after The Cars first LP in November 1978 -- and not released in wide distribution until 1979.

Joy Division's first EP also released in 1978, first album not until June 1979

Buzzcocks were not a synth band by anyone's measure. Magazine's first album was -- you guessed it -- 1978. Less than one month before the Cars LP. So unless Ocasek has a time machine, or could write, record and press the LP in two weeks....

Wire's first album was 1977 but you will have to tell me where the synths are on it

Kraftwerk is a definite influence but they are German not British

As for Eno I mentioned Roxy Music, another definite influence, but I mentioned them already.

So, basically, you are completely wrong.

But thanks for playing. We have some lovely parting gifts and a copy of our home game...

Replace Journey with Cheap Trick.

Neither one. Not Supertramp, either. I say King Crimson deserves it, though. SRV? No. He was just another blues guitar player. Sorry. Rehashed twelve bar doesn't get you far.

Suicide!

I'm kidding...sorta.

Well, they did start synth/punk/goth/emo/rock.

While I understand how you could say that, IMHO that's not entirely true. The blues was his main idiom, but he mixed many other styles, (Lenny - Chitlins Con Carne - etc) and his tone was totally unique and immediately identifiable.

He's more of an influence to other guitarists, but he is by no means "another blues player".

And Cheap Trick gets in. King Crimson? NFW. Not until other proggers are in there first.
