(Blabbermouth) Ironic Def Leppard frontman accuses LA glam bands of being vapid, insults David Bowie and says he wanted to shag Hanoi Rocks frontman Mike Monroe all in a two minute statement. But he's not gay. Just stupid   (roadrunnerrecords.com) divider line 54

Love the Lep, but, with the exception of Euphoria, everything they've put out for the past 15 yrs has sucked. I've seen them live each of the past two summers and while the music sounds great, Joe's voice is beyond gone. Their mix man has to be the hardest working man in rock.

Def Leppard lyrics really make you think about things, and stuff:

Are you gettin' it? Really gettin' it?
Yes, are you gettin' it, really gettin' it?
Oh, come get it from me

Gimme all of you lovin' - ev'ry little bit
Gimme all that you got - ev'ry bit of it
Ev'ry bit of your lovin' - Oh come on live a bit
Never want it to stop - Oh, are you getting it?
Gimme all of your lovin' - Ooh really gettin' it?
Gimme all that you got - Oh are you getting it?
Gimme all of your lovin' - Oh live a bit
Gimme all that you got - Whoa, live a bit

You've got to live it - gimme all of your lovin'
Ooh baby live it - gimme all that you got
C'mon and give it - ev'ry bit of your lovin'
Oh come on and give it - Never want it to stop
Oh are you gettin' it? - Gimme all of your lovin'
Ooh really gettin' it? - Gimme all that you got
Oh are you gettin' it? - Ev'ry bit of your lovin'
Oh live a bit - Never want it to stop

Def Leppard's time came and went years ago, the fact is they suck. But, let's get one thing perfectly straight.....they are f***ing LED GODDAMN ZEPPELIN compared to the music that is Poison.

Back in the days when I did radio, Michael Monroe was probably the second best interview I did (Ace Frehley was the best). He's intelligent, funny, and didn't seem at all bitter about the course his career took after Nicholas Dingley was killed. Guns 'n Roses were basically a Hanoi Rocks tribute band. There's no telling what might have happened to Hanoi Rocks if their drummer hadn't died just as their music was being introduced in the States.

Most of your post was true. I was at the last ever Hanoi Rocks show, which was in some shiathole club in Syracuse in '84. There might have been 100 people in the club. It was during "Up Around The Bend" that Mike jumped way high and came down on the wedge, trashing his ankle. They had to carry him offstage and into a car.

If that hadn't happened they wouldn't have been off for so long and the accident might not have occurred.

After the show I was in the dressing room and Andy McCoy was telling me how they were pals with Motley Crue and were going to see them in California. The Razzle burst into the room and grabbed the chemical fire extinguisher off the wall and sprayed the entire room -- band, fans, radio people, deli platter -- everything -- covered in white. It was a true moment of rawk abandon and many were pissed but I found it hysterical.

...and you know the rest of the story...

Where you are wrong is in saying that GnR was a HR tribute band. They were both New York Dolls tribute bands.

I gotta tell ya, TDM, in my book, nothing in the history of recorded music sucks as bad as Poison.

I never felt a single American band, besides Metallica at the time, could hold a candle to the NWOBHM.

I still maintain that Hanoi Rocks were more of a direct influence on Guns 'n Roses than the New York Dolls were. You're absolutely right about HR being a Dolls tribute band, though.

I know where you are coming from. But the difference to me was Poison never pretended they were good. Just read one interview from CC about his guitar playing. He knew they sucked!

No, I do not care for their songs (except "Talk Dirty To Me" which I think is wicked fun) but to me they are far better to have around then pretentious "we are artists" farks like Def Leppard -- or even The Police, for that matter.

It's Only Rock and Roll.

kanesays: I never felt a single American band, besides Metallica at the time, could hold a candle to the NWOBHM.

Well, if you are a metal fan, I guess I can see how you would say that, but to me DL was always pretentious overproduced crap. I liked their first record (and my high school punk rock band even covered "Wasted") but I hear those drum tracks and I just think of a giant mound of nuclear green pulsating dog shiat so sucky there isn't a bag big enough.

As for NWOBHM, there is Priest and Maiden. DL is not in their league.

CheddarPants: I still maintain that Hanoi Rocks were more of a direct influence on Guns 'n Roses than the New York Dolls were.

While I disagree it is a legitimate opinion. I don't think any of those bands would exist in the same way without the Dolls. Andy McCoy and Slash were all about Johnny Thunders.

Def Leppard alaways got lumped in with the L.A. hairband crowd by many people because Def Leppard were popular on Headbanger's Ball too.

All of the kids that were getting into Poison and Warrant thought Def Leppard were from the same crowd. It still pisses Joe Elliot off. I heard him talking about it on XM just the other day.

Been listening to Def Leppard since their NWOBHM roots. Hysteria was a fun pop record, and most of the stuff after that has been forgettable.

Dreadstar: I gotta say, I never would have thought I'd see the day where Hanoi Rocks or Mike Monroe got mentioned on Fark.

Exactly! It's a great day in Farkistan...

Hanoi Rocks were hugely influenced by the Dolls/Iggy/Stiv Bators. They may have had the "glam" image, but the music is always what mattered most to those guys, and they certainly have the chops to back it up. Check out their newer stuff since their rebirth in 2002 - most of it is outstanding...

But anyhow, throw in the drummer for Enuff Znuff with the dude from Hanoi Rocks and you could have the start of the prettiest band evar.

steamingpile: You're an idiot. Poison was a sucky glam band, leppard was a great 80s hard rock band.

Sorry, Fanboy. I agree that Poison was a sucky glam rock band -- but nothing about Def Leppard is "great" IMHO. I think they are the nadir of lousy, vapid, overproduced ghostwritten 80's schlock. Nothing great about them.

And if you read the thread, and the article, you would have known that it was Def Leppard that compared themselves to Poison, and not me. Thus making the discussion of DL and Poison in the thread somewhat relevant, and not really idiotic in any sense.

Also, I don't think having a particular opinion on music makes anyone an idiot.

However, commenting on things without reading them might.

Farkomatic: drummer for Enuff Znuff

ahh Enuff Znuff, Chicago's one entry into 80s hair band mayhem.

I always feel for Def Leppard, because they are a very good band with really good songs. They do things that are pretty spiffy, yet do it so you don't even notice. Anyone can write a song with key changes, it takes real talent to write one where the key change isn't even noticable, just goes perfectly with the flow of the song.

I'm willing to bet he says retarded stuff more frequently, but, given how far their star has fallen, he can only find an outlet to repeat it every 10 years or so.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-07-14 09:53:09 PM
Also another thing, it's interesting that save for Bowie most of the bands that influenced Def Leppard were never very big at all in the US. So there's never much talk about how Def Leppard is in comparison to the bands they like, like T. Rex, Mott the Hoople and others. Irony is that Def Leppard, a band influenced most heavily by glam rock, was never itself a glam band or as it became in the US in the 80's, a hair band.

Being in a known band and knocking other bands is never a good idea. It makes one look petty and foolish. Be more respectful of your elders Joe...like David Bowie for example.

Enjoyed most of Def Leppard from "Pyromania" to "Adrenalize." Not so much after that. Did like some of the cover tunes on "Yeah."

That was hardly a slam on Bowie. Joe and Phil Collen did an album and tour with Bowie's Spiders From Mars rhythm section consisting of Ziggy-era Bowie tunes, literally a tribute band.

Def Leppard is unfairly lumped in with no-talent hacks like Poison, they aren't the bestest band evar, but they don't get the credit they deserve.

There's a reason Bret is on "reality" TV, and Def Leppard is still making music, they have talent if no longer mega-success, he doesn't.

WRONG . . FAIL , KISS took off the makeup in 1983 for the release of the lick it up album, poisons first album look what the cat dragged in didnt come out til 86 3 YEARS LATER , poison wasnt even a band til 85,and they werent even signed then, only a local band in hollywood and 85 is 2 YEARS AFTER KISS TOOK OFF THE MAKEUP

I think Poison has a lot of good songs...

"Every Rose..."
"Something to believe in"
"Nothin but a good time"
"Talk Dirty..."

These are good, simple rock and roll songs. The ballads are actually quite moving.

DL are good too, but they keep trying to remake hysteria instead of trying different shiat.
