i don't know about that, but since it involves nascar, it clearly doesn't belong on the sports tab

No, Obama bailed on Nascar since if you slide from the left to the center that hard, the momentum is bound to smack you right into the wall.

I like how the initial greenlight on this story also told the tale of Obama's non sponsorship.

cars just don't go far enough to the left

But they do constantly change direction.

czerno 2008-07-14 12:12:11 AM
With Ken Schrader driving, the car would have gone right, straight into the wall.

It was a good idea they bailed on it - the rednecks would have booed the car, and it would have finished 40th anyway.

JackBauer48 2008-07-14 12:13:45 AM
really submitter???

He "bailed" on NASCAR sponsorship???

It wasn't his idea and it wasn't his campaign's idea. They were approached by a part time team looking for any sponsorship dollars they could get; he passed on the offer. It's not as though he accepted and the (for the CORRECT use of the word) bailed on the team.

Go Fast Turn Left: Has anyone pointed out yet that nobody else would sponsor BAM Racing, either.

Yeah. Who would want to sponsor a car that probably won't make the race?

yequalsy 2008-07-14 08:07:14 AM
It would have garnered boatloads of free pub, but in the end this was a bad idea. Even though it's bogus the environmental/energy angle would get harped about endlessly. (Bogus because other sports use even more energy with all the team travel.) Then there's the discrimination suit against NASCAR. Then they'd be sponsoring a third-tier, hell a fourth-tier team. Even with a great driver in Schrader, chances are good the car wouldn't qualify so then the story is the OBAMa car fails to even get in the race. If the car did qualify it would run in the back-pack all day and probably get caught up in a wreck. Then you have Epic Fail photoshops all over the place. Even if the car got through without a scratch it would still finish in, say, 30th. So then the the story is OBAMa is a loser. Top it off with the most boring track in all of NASCAR in Pocono and you have Bad Idea Jeans.

hokiebuckeye: Yeah. Who would want to sponsor a car that probably won't make the race?

That's because they didn't try hard enough to keep Kenny Schrader around. If anything, they should give Chad McCumbee the ride and let him do what he can on weeks that they're running the same time as the truck series. McCumbee's done alright in Petty's stuff, and the Petty's have worked with BAM before.

AgeOfReason 2008-07-14 10:15:18 AM
Obama is not even close to the left. There are only a few mildly left elected polititions at the federal level. He is far to teh right of over 60% of this country.

Yeah, because flying MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL teams all around the country doesn't use a drop of fuel.

Well, it is a drop ... compared to what it takes to (i) haul the athletes and an entire pit crew, (ii) haul the equipment and cars (RTFA ... this is a big concern), and (iii) race the farking race ... that versus flying a team of people on a single plane to games and then using personal energy to play the farking game.

It's not comparable d-bag.

Not comparable? Please, how much fuel to move one MLB team from Ney York to Atlanta?

One plane. How much to move a driver, his crew, his team, his cars, his pit equipment, etc., from NY to ATL?

Two tractor trailers. Do the math. Your argument has no validity.

And the drivers and their crew are in the tractor trailers too? And those trailers, they don't use more fuel with all the freaking cars and equipment in them, than say, one full of food? And all the fuel used driving in circles for a few hours only to end up at the same spot they started in?

I would guess it's about 10 to 1 ratio on fuel used. It has plenty of validity.

WaltzingMathilda:

Probably the crew, likely not the drivers.

And those trailers, they don't use more fuel with all the freaking cars and equipment in them, than say, one full of food?

No. They are a good deal lighter than a truck loaded with, say Cambell's soup. There is a great deal of empty volume.

And all the fuel used driving in circles for a few hours only to end up at the same spot they started in?

And your point is what? Driving is the entire concept of the sport. Are you saying that all motoersports should be stopped due to this "crises" as you phrase it?

If the Yankees fly down to Atlanta on an A-320, the fuel burn is going to be about 3,000 gallons. Guess we better shut them down, huh?

Well then, I suppose my fuel burn computation for the A-320 was all for naught. Why didn't you just say so right up front? You know, if people in this world tried being just a little more forthright in their speech, many misunderstandings would never materialize.

But there is no "energy crisis". Prices are up, but if you can afford to pay for it, then you should be able to use it in any manner you deem appropriate.

I sure hope you're right. Exponentially increasing global demand with very little invested in creating real alternatives at the end game of fossil fuel energy scares me to the point of crisis.
