(Boston Globe) Amusing Sunday night and the lights are low, so scientists are trying to determine why ABBA songs continue to endure after 35 years. You can dance, you can jive, but there's still no cure for cancer   (boston.com) divider line 40

Their songs endure because they're fun to listen to, most music in 1975 was like that, I remember the radio was a never ending source of dazzling composition and medleys. Today's radio...not so farkin' much.

Atonal rapping and a drum synthesizer do not a musician make, the audience has to know you are putting your heart into it. They will respond to that.

Today's music is shiat.

-1 Subby

Scientists work on lots of things that aren't a cure for cancer, and yet, gasp, have potential importance to our lives. How memory works might be one of these areas, and the more scientists understand that, the better they'll be equipped to attack, say, Alzheimer's disease.

The fact that some ditz wants to apply these findings to ABBA songs in particular does not imply that "scientists are trying to determine why ABBA songs" yadda yadda. Did Subby even RTFA?

ABBA is awesome. Fark the haters. "Eagle," "I'm a Marionette," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," and a whole bunch of others are some of the best songs I've ever heard.

They still sell because their wide dynamic range and echo machine generator harmonies screw up the auto-compressors used at radio stations. The result is they get to the radio with dynamic energy that most modern songs don't have and people feel an emotional connection to them. The same is true for rap but rap screws up the compressors using high impulse beats.

/still doesn't explain why more than 1 in 10 people in Melbourne bought tickets Mamma Mia.

Not a rabid fan, but have a couple on the ipod. What's hard to understand? Very tight harmonies, cute lyrical hooks, easy to sing along to. It's pop music, not rocket science.

Talk about pop music.

Talk about

Pop music

Pop

pop

pop music.

(It's in your head now, isn't it?)

I wanna dedicate it...

Alright! 70s Flashback Sunday.
I remember key parties, fondue and makin' love in my Chevy van.
Ok, not really. I was too young back then to remember much, but I did breathe the air, that's gotta count for something.

ABBA sounds absolutely amazing on a good set of headphones!

ABBA made music for the joy of making music. No heavy statements, no self indulgent wallowing in pain or angst, no political points, just music for the love of music.

The echo from that lasts a lot longer than all the deep important music which changes with the seasons, hairstyles, political issues du jour, and, today, media formats.

Also, spectacular production values by even today's standards didn't hurt them one bit.

ABBA isn't a bad band at all, and I kind of like a few of their songs.

But I farking HATE dancing queen. I was at a summer camp about 10 years ago and my cabin was located above the concession stand. THe girl running the stand played Dancing Queen on repeat for two hours every single day during break time.

"Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find
I try to reach for you but you have closed your mind
What ever happened to our love? I wish I understood
It used to feel so nice, it used to be so good
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me S.O.S.
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me S.O.S."

Simple and to the point. Lyrics wrapped around classical piano and synth riffs, along with perfect harmony. Excellent songwriters, musicians, and singers. That's why their songs will be played down through the generations while the rest of the garbage is forgotten. Well at least until 2012 that is.

Until you've seen drag queens with full beards and neon glitter wigs doing impressions of Joan Crawford and her daughter Christian ala "Mommy Dearest" slap each other on stage to "Mama Mia", it may be hard to understand why Abba is such a font of endless entertainment.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes ABBA. It's a guilty pleasure of mine.

I do believe I already have a subscription to your newsletter, because I have experienced that, and it is full of win.

Also, does this count as viral marketing for the movie with the ABBA songs? If so, I'd like to opt out.

Tool is good modern music that made it mainstream. It's really odd, too, when you consider the lyrics to a lot of their songs like Prison Sex and Stinkfist.

subby, I'm sure these scientists are not qualified to cure cancer, based solely on their choice of subject matter. They would probably barely qualify for crossing guards, and only after a thorough background check.

Only in Sweden does 'Mom, why were you such a skank that you were farking three guys at once?' Turn into a two-hour music-filled romp in Greece with three handsome possible dads, rather than a lengthy court case with four families, the inevitable drug and booze problems and a murder-suicide pact gone wrong.

ABBA is life...

Ive been cheated by you since I dont know when
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I dont know how but I suddenly lose control
Theres a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much Ive missed you

That's farking AWESOME.
