I know they were trying to go for a satire, but I honestly don't see what the satire is supposed to be saying.

They say it's satire, it clearly is, what's the importance here?

This is how some people actually see the Obamas. They're satirizing that idea.

as i look at that cover, the first thing that pops into my head is that conservatives will realize they have yet to accuse the obamas of burning the american flag.

I'm not going to vote for Obama, but I would think most educated people would be able to recognize the satirical aspects of this. It's pretty obvious, given the tone of the article itself.

But then its not really satire, its reinforcement. I mean, I don't get it. Shouldn't satire be over-the-top and also be placed in some sort of context? Again, I'm not offended, I just don't get it.

give me doughnuts [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 08:16:36 PM
It can't be satire if it is 100% accurate!

shidekigonomo [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 08:18:54 PM
It isn't tasteless, though satire need not be. What it is, however, is late on the draw, which makes it poor satire.

I think it works on a number of levels. For instance, I was offended at the racial stereotyping when I first saw the cover, although obviously I recognize the satirical aspect and yes, it is a little amusing.

The cover is intended to provoke discussion over perceptions of race, I think - and it does so by pushing the more hideous reality, that those stereotypes keep being almost unthinkingly perpetuated, right in in your face. If your gut reaction to it is horror, you can't help but think about the strength of these stereotypes, and how they reflect on fears of immigration, of critical thought about the United States, of deviation from the political template of a white middle-aged guy with shiny hair, a pandering attitude and a mute mannequin wife.

DamnYankees [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 08:34:22 PM
Also - why did they give Michelle an afro? That doesn't even make sense. Isn't that just blatantly racist, or am I missing something? There's nothing satirical about her in a 'fro. The muslim garb and the fist bump at least have some relationship to reality.

bronyaur1 [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 08:35:48 PM
I can't wait for their next cover... you know, the one where McCain is in a wheelchair calling his wife a c*nt, while ignoring his injured old wife and taking money from savings and loan lobbyists. Now THAT will be funny.

Maybe it's a nod to all those young blacks who became Muslim in the 60s and 70s. I don't know, I'm just hazarding a guess.

People have claimed she is a secret white-hating black radical in the vein of 60s radicals.... thus the Afro.

bad cover or not, though, New Yorker is still about the only decent magazine left in America.

afro's used to be controversial, believe it or not. a lot of white people were insulted that black people would be proud to wear their hair the way it grows naturally. now, of course, it just looks cool.

This is a side tangent, but I"ve always found it retarded when black nationalists tried to claim Afros and dreads where their "natural" heaircuts.

They are not natural. They take a lot of care and upkeep to make them work.

Everyone instantly recognizes satire.
You know how on Fark when a link to a satirical article is posted, no one ever reads the story and believes it's real?

America is a nation of intellectuals.
That cover will not reinforce the beliefs of mindless idiots that Barack and Michelle Obama are America hating Muslim terrorists because there are no mindless idiots in the U. S. of A.

fair enough. on balance, what is more natural: using a comb to make your hair poofy, or using chemicals strong enough to burn your scalp to straighten your hair enough that you can part it?

I'm sorry, Afros are natural? Since when? If you just let a black person's hair grow without doing anything to it, you aint gonna get an afro.

Well, I don't really see having "natural" hair as anything important. Most men shave, for example. There's nothing special about having "naturally" formed facial hair.

40 years ago, hair was incredibly important. the autobiography of malcom X goes on for pages and pages about the implications of straightening your hair. before the civil rights movement, almost all urban black people straightened their hair. when black men and many black women stopped straightening their hair, there was a perception that it was confrontational. whether it was or not, who knows. but that's why the cartoonist gave mrs. obama an afro.

Nah, the media is mostly harmless. You just have to watch out during sweeps month. As long as they keep the ad rates up, though, they're pretty toothless.

The only things I think they need to fix is their fiction (gotten very stale and predictable again, even though it was good for awhile) and the poetry (which has always been atrocious, but still..)

I'm a firm believer that 1) the media creates a constant barrage of dumb and 2) for the most part people are stupid. It worries me some of the stuff I see on TV because I know someone, somewhere is believing the crap they're seeing.
